What Happened to He Si Mu and Duan Xu on Love Beyond the Grave Ending?

Because of Duan Xu, He Si Mu killed the leader of the All-Knowing sect, violating the Golden-Wall Decree. She was punished, and her power was depleted.

Yan Ke used this opportunity to seize the power and rule the Spirit World. He Si Mu was imprisoned in her chamber. Yan Ke put a barrier zone to keep her inside and restrict her spirit power.

It was impossible for He Si Mu to surrender the sovereign position to Yan Ke because he planned to make the Spirit World free of restraint and law. He said spirits were born from obsessions, so they should live as they please. During her absence, the Void was a mess and in chaos.

Jiang Ai, who was hunted by Yan Ke’s underlings, ran to the prison and saw Bai San Xing. He rushed to attack her, but the bracelet in her hand controlled him. And although Bai San Xing was weak, Jiang Ai didn’t have the heart to hurt Bai San Xing. Instead, she helped him regain his consciousness.

Meanwhile, in the mortal world. After the chaos in the North Chong prison and regaining his memory, Han Lin Qiu decided to leave the Tabai Army and went to wander the world.

Duan Xu apologized for making a decision for him and disfiguring his face. Han Lin Qiu understood his intention and bury the hatchet. But he still left anyway.

Duan Xu managed to take back Jingzhou from the Chong forces. But then Fenglai force attacked again. Duan Xu pressed on to Qizhou, and once again, he seized a city in one strike. For his achievement, Duan Xu was granted the title Marquis of Ningyi.

During that time, Xue Chen Ying was always beside him and helped him tend his wound. Xue Chen Ying was only concerned that his Xiao Xiao jie jie would be worried if he was injured.

Often times Duan Xu wondered if He Si Mu was forgetting him because no matter how he called for her, she never appeared in his world. Yet, he didn’t know that He Si Mu was imprisoned in her world.

Yan Ke, who was blinded by jealousy, went to the mortal world to kill Duan Xu. However, He Si Mu had already arranged for Hejia Feng Yi to protect Duan Xu without revealing her situation.

In fact, Feng Yi had already sensed that something had happened in the Void since he could read the stars. With Hejia Feng Yi’s help, Duan Xu found out that the North Chong soldiers were not afraid of pain because of Lu Da’s sorcery.

He started making a plan on how to defeat them. Meanwhile, far away in the Void, He Si Mu was also waiting for the right time to act.

Five years passed in the blink of an eye. Duan Xu led the Great Liang army and conquered Yingzhou, Tanzhou, Ruzhou, and Mozhou. Xue Chen Ying had become a teenager. He stayed at Duan Xu’s side as a sworn brother and also his successor.

Xue Chen Ying worked hard to become a tough soldier like him. He Si Mu’s chamber was now full of living beings thanks to Yan Ke. Jiang Ai also helped Bai San Xing recover, and now he realized that if he had become the sovereign back then, the Void would have fallen into chaos just like now.

He Si Mu was the perfect sovereign for the Void, and Bai San Xing was willing to help her return to the throne.

After Yan Ke ran away with the Glazed Pagoda, He Si Mu returned to her position and restarted the Golden Wall Decrees. And after the long wait, she finally visited Duan Xu. The longing was expressed in a tight embrace. But since the Void was still in turmoil, she couldn’t stay for long.

Swapping senses with He Si Mu had a side effect on Duan Xu. His body grew weaker, and his senses slowly started to fade. Still, he kept it from her and waited for the time when he could help her taste food and see colors.

Duan Xu thought he couldn’t do much for her, so he was willing to exhaust his life for her sake. His only wish was to help He Si Mu live a lively life, so she could be happy and not forget him.

Because he swapped his sense of taste with hers, Duan Xu fell ill, but he still led the army. During a battle, he shielded Xue Chen Ying and was struck by a poisoned arrow.

To get the antidote, He Si Mu traded her Spirit Lantern. Even so, she was confident that she could still govern the Void and defeat Yan Ke without it. The Lantern would only yield to Yan Ke if she died.

Meanwhile, Duan Xu told Hejia Feng Yi one thing that kept bothering him. He Si Mu could always see him whenever she wanted, but he couldn’t do the same. But He Si Mu still refused to see him, even after Hejian Feng Yi persuaded his Great Ancestor.

Nandu City fell into chaos after two princes besieged it. The emperor was critically ill and was forced to abdicate. Prince Jin and Fang Jian Ye took the emperor to the Royal Villa. All this time, Prince Jin, Fang Jian Ye, and Duan Xu had been working together for the people of Great Liang.

However, something made Fang Jian Ye uneasy when the emperor said he had sent a decree to Duan Xu, asking him to return to Nandu. Yet Duke Pei had intercepted all the letters from Nandu to Yanzhou.

Duan Xu was kidnapped by Yan Ke, throwing the army into chaos when North Chong launched an attack. Xue Chen Ying stepped up to lead the vanguard and protect the granary for the people’s sake. He fought with everything he had, but in the end, he was killed.

Before he died, Xue Chen Ying called out for He Si Mu. She came, but arrived too late. He was already gone. His death caused He Si Mu deep grief.

I cried too, Chen Ying… I cried… 😭😭

After Lu Da snatched the Lantern from Yan Ke, they ran away. All that was left was the badly wounded Duan Xu and the broken-hearted He Si Mu. She finally told Duan Xu the real reason why she had left him.

He Si Mu realized that she loved him too much and couldn’t bear to see him leave her one day. She was tired of watching everyone leave her behind. Hejia Feng Yi warned her that Duan Xu’s body was severely damaged and would continue to decline day by day.

After years of war, out of the 17 prefectures of Great Liang, Duan Xu had managed to reclaim 11. Only 6 prefectures were still held by North Chong. And every time he went into battle, Duan Xu carried the bloodied banner that Xue Chen Ying had died for.

Later, after the new emperor ascended the throne, bad news arrived. Fang Ji had died protecting Duan Xu. The news shocked him so much that he fainted. To Duan Xu, Fang Ji was more than just a friend. Years ago, he had been Duan Xu’s substitute, assigned by his father.

After Duan Xu returned in glory, Duan Chen Zhang almost killed Fang Ji. But he survived and never blamed Duan Xu for what happened. Together, they had vowed to protect the people.

Duan Xu once again escaped death thanks to He Si Mu. Now, after Fang Ji’s death, he decided to live for himself. He told his father that he had someone he loved and things he still wanted to do.

Meanwhile, after learning about Xue Chen Ying’s death, Han Lin Qiu returned to the army. Determined to fulfil his promise to reclaim the remaining prefectures, Duan Xu kept fighting.

Even though his life had been saved by He Si Mu’s elixir, he only had two years left. He Si Mu’s heart began to break once again.

The last war between Great Liang and North Chong was brutal. North Chong was supported by evil spirits who slaughtered Great Liang’s soldiers mercilessly. Mai Zi helped He Si Mu and Duan Xu by locating the Glazed Pagoda where Yan Ke was hiding. After it was destroyed, He Si Mu quickly found Yan Ke, and they fought.

But because of Lu Da’s interference, the Lantern was broken, and He Si Mu’s vital gate was exposed. As she drifted toward eternal death, her memories of Duan Xu brought her back. In the end, both Yan Ke and Lu Da died.

Hejia Feng Yi, who had exhausted all his energy, managed to return to life. When he realized he was alive, he cried in front of He Si Mu. After reclaiming the last prefecture, Duan Xu gave up his military power and left the army. He chose to travel the world with He Si Mu.

Meanwhile, the small jellyfish that had been following He Si Mu turned out to be Xue Chen Ying. Because he had absorbed some of the Spirit Lantern’s power, he became a spirit. He was reborn from his obsession to protect the couple and fulfil their wish. He Si Mu told Hejia Feng Yi that if he was willing, Xue Chen Ying could soon take over the position of sovereign.

Duan Xu and He Si Mu started their life together in the small courtyard where she grew up. Hejia Feng Yi and Zi Ji visited to deliver Duan Xu’s medicine.

When they were alone, Zi Ji told He Si Mu to return to the Void, because Duan Xu’s life would eventually fade, and as the sovereign, she shouldn’t remain in the mortal world. He Si Mu brushed it off, saying Zi Ji had done the same, because Zi Ji was actually an immortal who chose to stay by Hejia Feng Yi’s side.

Hejia Feng Yi felt that the fate surrounding his life and family was unfair. To maintain the balance of the world, they had to suffer. And honestly, Hejia Feng Yi was tired of it.

Although Zi Ji always appeared indifferent, when Hejia Feng Yi intentionally threw himself into the river, she grabbed his hand and pulled him into an embrace.

Duan Xu used to be afraid that He Si Mu would forget him. But now, he was afraid that she would always remember the pain of losing him. She replied that she would remember everything about him and then asked him to marry her.

Love Beyond the Grave Ending Explained - poster

Their wedding was held in a grand ceremony in the Void. All the spirits came to celebrate. Unexpectedly, Duan Xu activated the last blessed flower to complete the senses exchange one final time.

Now, He Si Mu could see colors, feel the flowers, hear the music, smell the scented pouch, taste tears… and see him in his wedding robes. 🥲

They completed the ceremony. He Si Mu looked at him and said she would love him for the rest of her life and never forget him. But because of the exchange, Duan Xu’s life declined rapidly, and he wouldn’t survive the day.

Jiang Ai brought them to a mountain peak to watch the sunrise. Even though she knew their happiness would be short-lived, Jiang Ai was moved by their love.

Duan Xu died in He Si Mu’s arms, shattering her heart. She begged him to stay, cried for him to open his eyes. Nothing changed. No matter how loud she screamed, Duan Xu would never come back. As her grief deepened, everything around her froze.

Later, He Si Mu announced her retirement as sovereign, because a new one had appeared, he is Xue Chen Ying. The spirits doubted him at first, but he proved that the Spirit Lantern had chosen him. When Jiang Ai bowed to him, the others followed.

He Si Mu left the Void. Xue Chen Ying saw a small jellyfish following her and felt that it might be Duan Xu. Jiang Ai said that was impossible, but Xue Chen Ying believed Duan Xu would return and stay by He Si Mu’s side. Jiang Ai smiled, saying that if it were Duan Xu, then everything was possible.

At the end, He Si Mu went to the mortal world and lived as one of them. Hejia Feng Yi and Zi Ji watched over her. He predicted that the one she had lost would return. And the small jellyfish still stayed with her, as they walked side by side.

What Happened to Yan Ke on Love Beyond the Grave Ending Explained?

Yan Ke thought that after He Si Mu was severely wounded from the punishment, the affairs of the Spirit World would be handled by him. He didn’t expect that He Si Mu would choose Jiang Ai this time. However, Yan Ke didn’t back down. He used the opportunity to seize power and imprisoned He Si Mu to fulfill his obsession with her.

He offered her a solution. Since she didn’t like being the sovereign, he was willing to share the burden. He would be the sovereign, while she would be the queen. In his eyes, they were a perfect match made in heaven. But that was just his wishful thinking. Of course, He Si Mu refused.

The next day, Yan Ke accused Jiang Ai of corruption and claimed that He Si Mu had given him an oral decree to take over the governance of the Void. Meanwhile, to win her love, Yan Ke did everything he could, from presenting gifts to threatening her. None of it worked. Instead, it only hurt his pride.

Realizing that He Si Mu had never forgotten Duan Xu, Yan Ke lost his patience. He went to the mortal world to kill him. Duan Xu was saved by Hejia Feng Yi, who came even though his body broke out in rashes due to his allergy to spirits and he fainted afterward.

I chose to use the word “allergic” because Hejia Feng Yi got rashes just like my brother when he eats too much seafood. 🤪

Yan Ke grew bolder, sitting on the throne and proclaiming himself the acting sovereign. But he didn’t know that He Si Mu already had the Glazed Pagoda in her hands and was just waiting for the right time to act.

As time went by, Yan Ke still couldn’t find Jiang Ai, the Left Token, or Bai San Xing. This made him furious. There was one reason why Yan Ke didn’t want Bai San Xing to appear in front of He Si Mu. He knew the secret about Yan Ke killing her father. But it was too late. He Si Mu had already found out.

Yan Ke and He Si Mu fought. He managed to trick her and steal the Glazed Pagoda before run away to the Mortal World. Yan Ke was safe for a while because the pagoda could hide his aura, making it impossible for anyone, even He Si Mu, to track him down.

Yan Ke fled straight to North Chong to see Lu Da. While Duan Xu was supported by He Si Mu, Yan Ke promised Lu Da that he wouldn’t lose to him as long as he followed his orders.

Because Duan Xu was wounded and poisoned, Yan Ke managed to get his hands on the Spirit Lantern. Still, he couldn’t use its power properly because it wouldn’t yield to him. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t use it for his own gain. Using the Lantern, Yan Ke suppressed the spirits in Yangzhou, the city where he was hiding.

Lu Da learned that the Spirit Lantern was the symbol of the sovereign. It could grant immense power to a spirit and allow them to rule the Void. Lu Da started to have his own ideas. He wondered what would happen if a human possessed the Lantern.

Once again, Yan Ke appeared in front of Duan Xu to kill him. Because Duan Xu was distracted after seeing the Lantern hanging at Yan Ke’s waist, he was captured.

Yan Ke planned to use Duan Xu as leverage against He Si Mu, but she just brushed it off and laughed at him. He Si Mu then revealed that 300 years ago, she had torn out her vital gate and fused it into the Lantern.

This put Yan Ke in a difficult position. He couldn’t kill He Si Mu, because that would mean destroying the Lantern. Yet he couldn’t make the Lantern yield to him if He Si Mu was still alive. Hearing this, Duan Xu finally realized that He Si Mu had traded the Lantern for the antidote.

Yan Ke then told Duan Xu to exchange senses with He Si Mu according to his orders. He wanted to defeat and capture her. Later, once the Lantern chose him as its master, he would let He Si Mu stay by Duan Xu’s side for the rest of his life.

After Xue Chen Ying died, He Si Mu went to face Yan Ke head-on. She walked straight into a trap. Duan Xu used the blessed flower to exchange senses, but the barrier blocked its power.

Just when Yan Ke activated the Lantern, Lu Da snatched it from his hand and swallowed it. The Lantern’s power surged through his entire body. But Lu Da didn’t realize that it was too much for a mortal like him. Seeing him on the verge of death, Yan Ke took Lu Da away.

Lu Da was in agony as his body merged with the Lantern. He persuaded Yan Ke to help him control its power so he could use it to assist him. Together, they could bring down He Si Mu, Duan Xu, and Great Liang. Yan Ke agreed.

Although he helped Lu Da, Yan Ke secretly created a way to control him. But Lu Da was no longer just a mortal. The Lantern’s power now lived inside him. So no matter how hard Yan Ke tried, it was useless.

While they clashed with their spirit power, Mai Zi saw a chance to snatch the Glazed Pagoda. She threw it straight into where their energies collided. The pagoda couldn’t withstand the impact and was destroyed.

Without the pagoda to hide him, He Si Mu easily located Yan Ke. They fought fiercely. In the end, Yan Ke was struck down by He Si Mu’s sword. But even at the end, he refused to believe that his greed had corrupted him.

Meanwhile, Lu Da, who witnessed everything, lamented that because of evil spirits like them, his father and brothers had all died. In the end, he used all his power to destroy the Lantern, hoping that if He Si Mu died, all evil spirits would vanish from the world.

The Lantern broke, and He Si Mu’s body began to disappear. Yan Ke saw it with despair, but for He Si Mu, it felt like relief. As her body faded, her vital gate floated in the air.

Lu Da tried to grab it, but Yan Ke stopped him. Although he tried to destroy He Si Mu, Yan Ke didn’t want others to hurt her. In the end, Yan Ke’s death was inevitable. He Si Mu, still acknowledging their years of companionship, bid farewell.

On the ending, Lu Da sneaked up behind her with a knife. When he tried to stab He Si Mu, he was stopped by Duan Xu, who swiftly killed him with his Deliverance sword.

What Happened to Fang Ji / Fang Xian Ye on Love Beyond the Grave Ending Explained?

All this time, Fang Ji, Prince Jin, and Duan Xu had always been loyal to the people. When the emperor fell ill, and two princes forced him to abdicate, Fang Ji and Prince Jin took the emperor to hide at the Royal Villa.

The emperor said he had sent an edict to the generals, ordering them to return to Nandu and help, Duan Xu included. The moment he heard this, Fang Ji felt a bad premonition.

The edict never reached Duan Xu because Duke Pei had intercepted it. Duan Xu never returned, which made the emperor suspicious of him. When the emperor questioned it, Fang Ji defended Duan Xu. But his fear turned out to be true.

The emperor granted him a promotion. He was titled Marquis of Zhonghe and became the Vice Military Commissioner and Vice Counsellor. He was given the authority to decide when the edict would be revealed. But that glory came with a price. And it was Duan Xu’s life.

The emperor eventually died. Three days later, Prince Jin ascended the throne as the new emperor. Meanwhile, Duan Xu managed to reclaim five more lands.

Fang Ji grew anxious when a thief broke into his house, and the edict was gone. He wandered through the city and ran into Duan Jing Yuan. She brought him dumplings and thanked him for protecting the Duan family. When she called him “brother,” Fang Ji felt a quiet happiness.

Duan Jing Yuan was oblivious that years ago, Fang Ji had become Duan Xu’s substitute. The times he spent with her had always been a precious memory to him. Deep down, Fang Ji loved Duang Jing Yuan. But he was content to remain her brother.

The edict had been taken by Yao Jian He, known as the Duke of Pei. He brought and revealed in the court. Because it bore the late emperor’s seal, the new emperor couldn’t defy it.

The officials began demanding Duan Xu’s execution. Knowing he had no choice, Fang Ji made his decision. He lied. He claimed that he had been forced by Yao Jian He to forge the edict. He took all the blame for framing a loyal official.

Since it was high treason and beyond pardon, Fang Ji chose his own end. He slammed his head into a pillar in court. In that way, he saved Duan Xu and spared the emperor from having to punish him.

At the end, Fang Ji’s death brings the most sadness to three people: Duan Xu, the emperor, and Duan Jing Yuan.

Extra Episode

This extra episode is only 6 minutes long, but it gave us the closure we badly needed.

He Si Mu cried incessantly while holding Duan Xu’s cold, stiff body. The surroundings were covered in ice. Frozen, just like her heart after losing the love of her life. Suddenly, the air grew warmer as a white figure walked toward her.

Love Beyond the Grave Ending Explained - He Si Mu
Love Beyond the Grave Ending Explained – He Si Mu

With every step, the ice melted away, replaced by lush green. The figure was Zi Ji, Hejia Feng Yi’s maidservant. But now, she was no longer Zi Ji. She had returned to her true identity, an immortal.

He Si Mu asked why she had taken everyone from her, turning her lonely life into an unmarked grave for others. Her desperation was clear. Zi Ji replied in a flat tone, saying He Si Mu didn’t need to be hostile.

Every life had its own place and its own limits. Duan Xu had given her the five senses and paid for it with his life. And he did it to uphold order. Hearing this, He Si Mu let out a hysterical laugh.

She said she was born without five senses, forced onto the throne. It’s all for the sake of order. She refused it. She wasn’t a tool for the gods, and Duan Xu wasn’t her tool either.

But what Zi Ji said next stunned her. She said she could save Duan Xu. It was a reward for both of them. For He Si Mu’s devotion to maintaining the balance between the Mortal and Spirit Worlds. And for Duan Xu, for all his effort to defy fate. They were granted new destinies. And just like that, Zi Ji disappeared, leaving He Si Mu in shock.

In a small courtyard, where the breeze played with the pinwheels and purple wisteria flowers bloomed, a wooden front door slowly opened. He Si Mu, dressed in green, stepped inside hesitantly. Her hand clutched the fox tassel on her dress as her eyes scanned the place. When she turned her head, she saw the face she had been longing for. Duan Xu stood there, smiling at her.

In the end, this was the life she had been dreaming of. Even if it meant losing all her power and becoming mortal, it didn’t matter to her. Because all this time, He Si Mu’s greatest wish had been to live as a mortal.

My Two Cents

I was wondering what will happen to Hejia Feng Yi. Did Zi Ji managed to change his fate and give him a longer life? The Hejia family has always suffered from short lifespans. Now I am sure that He Si Mu’s mother, Si Wei, didn’t live long either.

The ending was actually predictable for me. You could see how much He Si Mu valued human life. She didn’t mind the short years, because in her eyes, their lives were beautiful and lively.

Unlike the cold and dull world of spirits. If she hadn’t loved human life that much, He Si Mu wouldn’t have spent so much of her time wandering in the Mortal World. She would have stayed at the throne and governed the Void.

Thank you for staying until the end reading this on Love Beyond the Grave ending explained, dear readers. I hope you loved the story as much as I did. Well, I’ll see you in another drama review and ending explained post. Until then, goodbye! 👋🏻
