Under the Moonlight Ending Explained
What Happened to Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu on Under the Moonlight Ending?
Qi Zong Yue objected to the idea of Qi Meng Lin marrying Luo Shu. He wanted to betroth Qi Meng Lin to a lady from an official family. When Qi Meng Lin refused, he was severely punished. In protest, Qi Meng Lin went on a hunger strike.
Luo Shu came secretly because she was worried. But when she saw how disappointed he was, she scolded him severely. This made Qi Meng Lin wake up from his stupor.

Luo Shu begged Qin Yi to sell grains so that she could help the people of Linfen. He agreed if Luo Shu was willing to marry him. Meanwhile, Qi Meng Lin forged an order letter and stole two ships of military grains. He thought that his plan was flawless, and besides helping the people of Linfen, he also saved Luo Shu from marrying Qin Yi. Qi Meng Lin did not know that he had fallen into Qin Yi’s trap.
Qing Meng Lin sailed to Linfen. In the middle of the journey, Qin Yi’s people put him to sleep to give them time to change the grains. When he arrived in Linfen, Qi Meng Lin and Lian Shu were shocked to see that the grains had turned into rice husks.
That same night, the Qi family’s granary was burned down. All the grains were destroyed. Qi Zong Yue finally understood that Liu Yi Qing had destroyed his family, and Qi Zong Yue began to regret his years of greed.
The news spread that Qi Meng Lin had stolen the military grain and burned down the granary to cover it up. This was a capital crime. The Qi family was taken to the capital, and Qi Yan Jin hid in the mountain.
Qi Meng Lin met Luo Shu in Linfen. He learned about the incident from her and wanted to return to Taiyuan to help his family. He didn’t want to burden Luo Shu, so he drove her away.
It was not easy for Qi Meng Lin to enter the city of Taiyuan because Qin Yi’s henchman was looking for him. Luckily, Luo Shu followed Qi Meng Lin and helped him enter the city.
Qi Meng Lin should have known by now that he couldn’t do anything without Luo Shu’s help. 😉
To prove that the Qi family was trapped, Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu tried to find a witness and the missing grains. They were about to get a trace when they were suddenly ambushed by Qin Yi. Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu got help from Qi Yan Jin, who took them to his hideout. Qi Yan Jin explained everything to them. Including Qi Zong Yue’s involvement in the death of Luo Shu’s parents.
Qi Zong Yue had been colluding with the Qin family in order to amass wealth. However, a low-ranking official found out about it and filed a report. Qi Zong Yue planned to solve the problem through bribery.
But Qin Yi, who came with his foster father, said otherwise. He told them that they should kill the small official. The small and straightforward official was Luo Shu’s father. It was Qin Yi who planned everything, including setting fire to the house.
Qi Meng Lin was ashamed that his Qi family was involved in Luo Shu’s tragic past. But she calmly said that since they were facing the same enemy, they should join hands.
While they were talking, Qin Yi found their hiding place. Qi Yan Jin sacrificed himself as a decoy so that Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu could escape from Qin Yi’s men. It was too bad that Qi Yan Jin later died at the hands of Qin Yi.
The god of luck was with Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu. Peng Cheng’s subordinate was greedy and sold the supposedly destroyed grain to a small merchant in one of Taiyuan’s ports. They found the grain and the proof that it came from the military granary.
Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu pretended to be the merchant and brought the whole grain. They took the grains to Linfen and distributed it to the starving people. They also told the people of Linfen that the culprit was Liu Yi Qing. The people believed them because they recognized Luo Shu and Qi Meng Lin.
While they were still at the port, the warrant for Qi Meng Lin’s arrest had just arrived in Yamen. At the same time, Qin Yi arrived in Linfen to arrest Qi Meng Lin. Han Mu Zhi helped Luo Shu and Qi Meng Lin and hid them in Yamen for their safety. For their safety, Qi Meng Lin wrote two letters. The first letter was to Sun Qian. He asked him to lead the high officials of the imperial court to Linfen.
The second letter was for Lian Shu to find Ru Yuan, the lover of the granary officer. At first, Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu managed to hide in the Yamen. Unfortunately, when Han Mu Zhi went out of town to quell a village riot, Qin Yi attacked the Yamen. Luo Shu and Qi Meng Lin managed to run away, but Qi Meng Lin was injured.
Qin Yi’s men captured Luo Shu while she was looking for medicine and was taken to Minke House.
Qi Meng Lin realized that Luo Shu was missing and tracked her to the Minke House. He arrived just in time to stop Qin Yi from assaulting Luo Shu. Qi Meng Lin tried to negotiate with Qin Yi, but failed.
Han Mu Zhi arrived with his Yamen Guards. He was accompanied by Zhao Gong Ming, who had a different agenda. When Han Mu Zhi tried to save Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu from the fire, Zhao Gong Ming planned to burn them to death. Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu were saved after they jumped out of the second-story window.
Qi Meng Lin could not escape his crime and was taken to prison. Luo Shu went to his cell and invited him to a wedding ceremony. Dazed, Qi Meng Lin thought it was just a dream. He happily followed her. He only realized that it was real when their heads bumped into each other.
For fear of bringing her down, Qi Meng Lin had refused to marry her. But Luo Shu said that she had her heart set on him. No matter what, she would marry him. So the two of them continued the ceremony and became husband and wife.
It was not over for them. Han Mu Zhi was arrested because of Liu Yi Qing’s plot. To help him, Luo Shu saved Peng Cheng from death. Peng Cheng realized that Liu Yi Qing wanted to kill him, so he stepped forward to testify against Liu Yi Qing and Qin Yi in court. However, Liu Yi Qing only surrendered after a key witness voluntarily appeared.
The Qi family was banished and stripped of their title. Their property was also seized. Qi Meng Lin was also banished. But because his act of stealing the military grain was to help the people, he was spared death.
In the new place, Luo Shu worked as a merchant who often went far away to do business. Qi Meng Lin is in charge of their home and waits for her return after her business trips.
What Happened to Han Mu Zhi and Liu Wan on Under the Moonlight Ending?
Han Mu Zhi went to Taiyuan City to borrow the relief grain. But Liu Yi Qing deliberately refused his requests. Han Mu Zhi was also rejected by Qin Yi when he wanted to buy grains.

Liu Wan heard that Han Mu Zhi came to her house and invited him for dinner. Driven by emotion, Han Mu Zhi accused her of making things difficult for the people of Linfen because of her resentment toward him. Liu Wan was angry because she didn’t have anything to do with it. But she promised to help him talk to his father.
Liu Wan went to protest to her father after the meeting. Liu Yi Qing scolded her, telling her not get involved in politics. Meanwhile, Han Mu Zhi realized his mistakes and felt overwhelmed with guilt. While drunk, he told Luo Shu all his thoughts, his disappointment, and his guilt for failing to help the people of Linfen. Han Mu Zhi, the proudest man in Linfen, realized that he was weak in the face of power.
Luo Shu helped Han Mu Zhi by pleading with Qin Yi. Qin Yi promised to sell the grains for the people of Linfen if she agreed to marry him. Peng Cheng broke the news to Officer Cai and Han Mu Zhi, and they didn’t approve of Luo Shu’s sacrifice for the grains.
Han Mu Zhi finally saw the dark side of bureaucracy, and it brought him down. He ignored Chen Mei Qing’s persuasion and wrote a letter of resignation. It was sent to Zhao Gao Ming and somehow ended up in Liu Yi Qing’s hands.
Liu Yi Qing gave the letter to Liu Wan. He wanted her to know how useless Han Mu Zhi was. But Liu Wan still defended him and blamed her father for refusing to let Han Mu Zhi borrow the grains.
Liu Wan was determined to marry Han Mu Zhi. She said that she admired Han Mu Zhi for his integrity and purity. She told her father she would shave her head and be a nun if she couldn’t marry Han Mu Zhi.
Liu Wan went to Linfen to persuade Han Mu Zhi not to resign. Liu Wan expressed anger at her father’s use of innocent lives in an attack on his political rival. She hated being a woman who couldn’t influence his decisions. However, Han Mu Zhi could do what she could not.
Before the stunned Han Mu Zhi, Liu Wan said she never valued him for his looks or talent. From the first time they met, she appreciated Han Mu Zhi’s unyielding spirit and resilience. She said that since Han Mu Zhi refused to be corrupt, he should do something to change it.
Liu Wan returned the letter of resignation to Han Mu Zhi. Han Mu Zhi was now looking at her from another perspective. He carefully asked her who had chosen him to be the son-in-law of the Liu family, was it Liu Yi Qing or was it Liu Wan? With a smile on her face, Liu Wan replied that it was she who picked him. The answer left Han Mu Zhi speechless. All this time, he misunderstood Liu Wan.
As the daughter of an official, Liu Wan has a good understanding of the official world. Her words were a wake-up call for Han Mu Zhi. Before they parted, Liu Wan gave Han Mu Zhi a handmade pouch. For the first time, Han Mu Zhi was reluctant to let her go. In his eyes, this Liu Wan is a completely different person.
A fire burned down Mingke Haouse, Qin Yi, and almost killed Qi Meng Lin and Luo Shu. Han Mu Zhi argued with Zhao Gong Ming, as he refused to try Peng Cheng’s assassination attempt on Han as a capital crime. It wasn’t over yet.
Liu Yi Qing arrived at Linfen Yamen to personally settle the matter. He accused Han Mu Zhi of inadequate disaster relief and also sheltering a fugitive. Han Mu Zhi was arrested and will be sentenced to death.
Things didn’t go as Liu Yi Qing had planned. High-ranking officials from the capital came to Linfen. They were there for an investigation into the grain theft and the disaster.
In court, Han Mu Zhi accused Liu Yi Qing of being the culprit who caused hundreds of people to starve to death. He told the court all about Liu Yi Qing’s collusion with Qin Yi, Qi Meng Lin’s grain theft, and Peng Cheng’s death. The purity and integrity of his character shone through during the trial.
However, it was not easy to bring Liu Yi Qing down.
As Liu Yi Qing was gloating over his almost victory, another witness came. Liu Wan personally brought evidence of her father’s crimes.
Before she spoke, Liu Wan kneeled down and begged Liu Yi Qing’s forgiveness for being an unfilial daughter. She told him that she didn’t want her father to fall into the abyss. Only then did Liu Yi Qing realize her intention.
Two years later, Han Mu Zhi found Liu Wan after searching everywhere for her. She went to live with her exiled Father, who died the year before. Liu Wan was shocked to see him at her door. Han Mu Zhi had been promoted and was going to the capital. Han Mu Zhi had asked her to marry him. And he was willing to wait for her to say yes.
What Happened to Qin Yi on Under the Moonlight Ending?
Qin Yi controlled the circulation of grains in Taiyuan. He made sure that anyone who dared to sell grains privately would be his enemy. When Han Mu Zhi failed to get grain from both Liu Yi Qing and Qin Yi, Luo Shu begged Qin Yi to help the people of Linfen. He humiliated her by forcing her to kneel. He told Luo Shu that he would help her with the grains if she was willing to marry him.

After Luo Shu and Qi Meng Lin’s return to Taiyuan, Qi Yan Jin told Luo Shu about the death of her parents. It was 14-year-old Qin Yi who hatched the plan to kill Luo Shu’s parents and even set the fire that engulfed the whole house. This was done to earn Mr. Qin’s trust. Qin Yi became the Qin family’s leader after Mr. Qin’s death.
Qin Yi had high ambitions. It was even so high that he dared to engage in various illegal businesses. This scared Qi Zong Yue. He immediately severed their ties after Qin Yi became uncontrollable. This action has also cut off Qin Yi’s source of income. As a result, he is holding a grudge against the Qi family. This is when Qin Yi decided to conspire with Liu Yi Qin to overthrow the Qi family.
No one expected that Qin Yi had been planting a spy in the Qi family for so many years. Surprisingly, the spy is Lian Qi, Qi Yan Jin’s attendant. Lian Qi has a different identity as well, the younger brother of Qin Yi.
Qin Yi killed Qi Yan Jin in a cruel way, despite their long friendship. He did this after Qi Yan Jin revealed Qin Yi’s weaknesses. Lian Qi was killed when he tried to stop Qin Yi from torturing Qi Yan Jin.
In his final moments, Lian Qi realized Qi Yan Jin treated him better than his brother. Qin Yan Jin’s death angered Liu Yi Qing, but Qin Yi was unfazed.
Qin Yi managed to catch Luo Shu in Linfen and took her to the Mingke House, a brothel he owned. He purposely built this place to break Luo Shu’s disobedience. Even selling Luo Shu’s deflowering night was meant to scare her.
Luo Shu laughed at Qin Yi’s proud attitude. She said that Liu Yi didn’t consider Qing as an ally. If the Qi family was destroyed, Qin Yi would also be dead because he was the proof of the Qi family’s crimes. Qin Yi refused to listen to them.
Qi Meng Lin found them and broke into the Mingke House. Qin Yi had already anticipated his arrival by placing gasoline all over the place. Qi Meng Lin offered himself to save Luo Shu. This scared Luo Shu, but Qin Yi was resolute. He refused to let her go.
Qi Meng Lin was about to die when Qin Yi’s subordinate reported that Han Mu Zhi had come to arrest him. Qin Yi didn’t believe it, thinking he was still useful to Liu Yi Qing. After hearing that Zhao Gong Ming had accused him of forging Liu Yi Qing’s edict, QIn Yi realized that Liu Yi Qing wanted him dead.
Qin Yi decided that he would not yield to anyone and decided to burn the building. He told Luo Shu that he would be taking her to death with him. Qin Yi started to laugh like a madman. He said fire brought them together ten years ago. And now the fire is keeping them together.
Qi Meng Lin tried to save Luo Shu, but Qin Yi stopped him. He said what he can’t get, no one else will get. Luo Shu pushed Qin Yi from the second floor to save Qi Meng Lin, and they fell. Qi Meng Lin caught her hand while Qin Yi held her foot. Luo Shu used all his strength to kick Qin Yi out of her foot. Then, he fell into the fire, which completely engulfed his body. Qin Yi died in the fire he started.
What Happened to Liu Yi Qing on Under the Moonlight Ending?
Although Qin Yi was his accomplice, Liu Yi Qing never trusted him. Mainly because Qin Yi was a ruthless man, and he also betrayed the Qi family. So while he was using Qin Yi to get rid of Qi Meng Lin, Liu Yi Qing was also looking for a way to get rid of Qin Yi.

Besides the Qi family, Liu Yi Qing also wanted to get rid of Han Mu Zhi. He didn’t want his daughter Liu Wan to be too attached to him. Liu Yi Qing saw Han Mu Zhi as a threat because he opposed him and got too close to Qi Meng Lin.
When Qin Yi went to Linfen to arrest Qi Meng Lin, Liu Yi Qing sent Peng Cheng to deliver an order to kill Han Mu Zhi. It was a good plan. If Qin Yi killed Han Mu Zhi, he would be charged with a serious crime. But Qin Yi gave the task to Peng Cheng, and Peng Cheng failed.
After Qin Yi’s death, Liu Yi Qing still planned to have Han Mu Zhi killed. He arrested him for a capital offense, but before the trial began, the high officials of the imperial court arrived in Linfen.
Liu Yi Qing was optimistic that he would win against Han Mu Zhi. But he never thought that there would be witnesses like Ruo Yan, the granary officer’s lover, and Peng Cheng, who he thought was dead. Liu Yi Qing and Zhao Gong Ming didn’t know that Luo Shu had helped Peng Cheng avoid the assassination attempt. All the witnesses pointed to Liu Yi Qing as the villain.
When Liu Yi Qing saw Liu Wan enter the court, he was afraid. But Liu Wan was determined to stop her father from doing bad things. With her daughter as a witness and the evidence she had, Liu Yi Qing could not run away from his crimes.
In the end, Qin Yi’s property was confiscated. Qi Zong Yue was exiled and his property was confiscated as well. Liu Yi Qing was dismissed from his post, given 20 lashes, and exiled, as was Zhao Gong Ming, who was also given 100 lashes and dismissed from his post. After the trial, the proud Liu Yi Qing fell ill and never recovered. He died a year later.
My Musing
Well, no matter how many times I watched it, the fire scene was a complete disappointment to me. Still, I found Under the Moonlight quite entertaining. However, the ending seemed too complicated. It was so complex at the beginning, but it ended in a rush.
