After another unsuccessful attempt to arrest Deng Liyang, Peng Zhaoling’s frustration caused him to lose sleep. He often woke up at 3 AM. and couldn’t go back to sleep. And when he did manage to get some sleep, he would be tormented by nightmares.
Nine years passed without any clues since the disappearance of Deng Li Gang and his group. Until Peng Zhao Lin’s younger brother-in-law gave him the clue he needed. He said that there was a patient in the hospital who looked like his old friend. However, his surname had changed from Deng to Sun. When Peng Zhao Lin showed him a photo, his brother-in-law firmly stated that the patient was indeed Deng Li De.
Based on this information, Peng Zhao Lin realized that Deng Li Gang and his group might have changed their identities. They could only live under the police’s radar for this reason. Peng Zhao Lin investigated the whereabouts of Deng Li De once again. And from Deng Li De’s ex-wife they got a place to start, Jingbei.
It is almost like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Deng Li De’s new identity was difficult to trace. But they still succeeded in finding out that Deng Li De’s new identity was Sun Xue Ming.
From there, things started to unravel. Peng Zhao Lin found out that Deng Li Gang and his group lived in Suilu Town. Peng Zhao Lin took his team as well as Zhen Zhen with him to Suilu. He needed her to identify the criminals.
Now, China’s population is one of the largest in the world. If they showed that finding Deng Li De was an easy task, I would stop watching the drama immediately!
After watching the villains for days, Peng Zhao Lin came up with the strategy that Deng Li Gang and his group should be arrested at the same time because they lived too close to each other. One slip could wreck it.
On D-day, Peng Zhao Lin personally went to arrest Deng Li Gang. A special team followed Peng Zhao Lin because they knew he was dangerous. It wasn’t an easy job as Deng Li Gang was fast and clever. He runs to the roof and when he is cornered, Deng Li Gang attempts to jump. But Peng Zhao Lin grabbed his hand and pulled him back.
They finally arrested Deng Li Gang and his group. Peng Zhao Lin then called Liu Liang, the father of Lin Xin Yuan. The old man put him on speakerphone and let Peng Zhao Lin tell his wife and daughter that he had finally arrested Lin Xin Yuan’s murderer. The justice they’ve been waiting for has finally come.
After several interrogations and trials, Deng Li Gang and Shi Bi were sentenced to death. Li Da Shun was already dead. Only Song Hong Yu was spared because Deng Li Gang and Shi Bi testified that she didn’t commit the murder.
This infuriated Zhen Zhen. Peng Zhao Lin understood how she felt. So he repeatedly told her that they needed evidence. Peng Zhao Lin could not openly order her to find the evidence, so he gave her the opportunity in the form of a vacation.
Zhen Zhen started the investigation in Decheng. It was a success. When she came back and visited Peng Zhao Lin’s house, she told him that she had some surprises for him. The first one was about the evidence, and the second one was about Qiao Han, who had helped her during her so-called vacation in Decheng.
In the end, Peng understood that they were in a relationship and told the couple to be considerate of each other. With the new evidence, Song’s trial resumed.
After 9 years, 11 months, and 21 days, Peng Zhao Lin had a good sleep with no nightmares and went home with a light heart.
What Happened to Zhen Zhen on Drifting Away Ending?
Starting a new life in Hexi was the right choice. Zhen Zhen made good friends and her parents were better than before. One day, she met an unexpected guest, Peng Zhao Lin. They had a chat in a small noodle shop. Zhen Zhen told him about the fear that still remained in her mind.
Zhen Zhen was stunned when Peng told her to enter Public Security University. Peng Zhao Lin said that if she became a police officer, it might help her to overcome her fear. And it would be even better if she could be someone that they were afraid of.
years later, Zhen Zhen had joined the force. Peng Zhao Lin had become her mentor, and she had a good relationship with Peng Zhao Lin’s family.
When Peng Zhao Lin found out where Deng Li Gang and his group were hiding, he ordered Zhen Zhen to go with him. Peng Zhao Lin said that he needed her to identify the killers. Zhen Zhen braced herself and went with the team.
At Suilu, Zhen Zhen saw Song Hong Yu with her son. This made her angry. Cruel woman like her did not deserve to live well, let alone have children. Peng Zhao Lin told Zhen Zhen that she still had a lot to learn about the complexity of mankind. She also needs to understand the different sides of human nature.
On the day that was planned, Zhen Zhen and her fellow officers went to arrest Song Hong Yu. At first, she just sat in the car. But listening to the police radio, Zhen Zhen heard that they had lost track of Song Hong Yu. She got out of the car and joined the chase. Zhen Zhen stopped Song Hong Yu in an alleyway.
When Song Hong Yu pretended not to know anything, she reminded her of the 2003 kidnapping case. Only then did Song Hong Yu realize that the short-haired woman was the stubborn young girl from that time. It was not until Zhen Zhen showed her police badge that she panicked. Song Hong Yu was then subdued by Zhen Zhen.
Zhen Zhen and Qiu Feng were reunited after they were called to testify. During the trial, Song Hong Yu refused to admit that she had killed Huang Ying. Deng Li Gang and Shi Bi also testified that Zong Hong Yu was forced to lure the victims. Everything she said to Zhen Zhen and Qiu Feng back then was just to scare them. Her words caused an uproar in the courtroom.
Zhen Zhen didn’t believe that Song Hong Yu hadn’t killed Huang Ying. She insisted until Peng Zhao Lin gave her leave so she could find evidence of the murder.
Zhen Zhen starts with Huang Ying’s bracelet. She went to Decheng, the place where the bracelet was most likely made. Zhen Zhen was not on her own, as she was later joined by her colleague from the Criminal Investigation Department, Qiao Han. It was obvious that he liked her.
In Decheng, Zhen Zhen not only found the bracelet maker and the story behind it, but also Huang Ying’s twin sister. Huang Ying`s real name was Yu Man. Her family had been searching for her for the past ten years. Yu Man’s twin sister, Yu Jiao, agreed to help them with the investigation. She followed Zhen Zhen to visit Song Hong Yu in jail.
Song Hong Yu was shocked when he saw her. She dazedly blurted out that she had killed Huang Ying with her hand. Based on her confession and the evidence, Song Hong Yu’s trial was reopened. She was sentenced to death.
At the drama ending, it was a cold morning under a hazy sun when Zhen Zhen returned the third class medallion to its owner, Peng Zhao Lin. He had kept his promise, so she should keep her word.
What Happened to Deng Li Gang on Drifting Away Ending?
After escaping from the police, Deng Li Gang and his group of killers went into hiding under a new identity in a small town called Suilu. He changed his name to Sun Xue Fei and opened a billiard hall and a message place. Two years after their escape, Song Hong Yu gave birth to his son.
Nine years after kidnapping Zhen Zhen, Deng Li Gang and his group didn’t realize that Peng Zhao Lin was only a step away from capturing them.
However, his instinct told him that something ominous was about to happen, and it made him restless. Not long after, Peng Zhao Lin and his team came to arrest him. Deng Li Gang resisted and ran to the roof. Realizing that there was no way out for him, Deng Li Gang decided to jump off the building. But Peng Zhao Lin grabbed his hand. Deng Li Gang told Peng Zhao Lin to let him go. Of course, Peng Zhao Lin refused to do so, doh!
On the way to Xuecheng, Peng Zhao Lin told Deng Li Gang that he thought about him every day and dreamed about him. Deng Li Gang also said that he dreamed a lot, but he couldn’t let Peng Zhao Lin appear in his dream.
Deng Li Gang was interrogated, but it was not easy to get information out of him. During one of the interrogations, Deng Li Gang told Peng Zhao Lin that his father had beaten him, his mother and his brother when he was drunk. He could take revenge on him because Deng Li Gang’s father had died of cancer. So he could only take it out on society.
Deng Li Gang’s killing began in 1993, when he became a taxi driver. His passenger was nagging him and threatening him, so he got emotional and ran her over. Since he couldn’t bury her or throw her in the river because everything was frozen, he thought of a way to dispose of her by mutilating her body.
Deng Li Gang never had any regrets or feelings of guilt. He said that if he were to have a second chance to do it, he would do a better job of covering up his tracks. That way, Peng Zhao Lin would never catch him.
At Drifting Away ending, after the trial, Deng Li Gang was found guilty of murder, rape, and kidnapping. He was sentenced to death. However, he still feels that he has been wronged. Before the execution, Deng Li Gang’s energy was so low that he couldn’t stand up. He was taken out of his cell in a wheelchair. Deep down inside, Deng Li Gang was afraid, but he was too arrogant to admit it.
What Happened to Song Hong Yu on Drifting Away Ending?
After arriving in Suilu, Song Hong Yu lived with Deng Li Gang. Their relationship had its ups and downs. It didn’t change even after she became pregnant and gave birth to a son.
At first, Song Hong Yu thought she couldn’t raise the boy. But after Deng Li Gang showed her a household registration for them, she felt happy. The registration stated that Deng Li Gang was the husband and Song Hong Yu was the wife. It also listed Deng Li Gang’s mother and Song Hong Yu’s father as her parents. Only then was her troubled heart at peace.
As Wang Ying, with a son and family, Song Hong Yu felt what it was like to live peacefully. She would cook for her family and take her son to kindergarten. She was no longer afraid of Deng Li Gang because she had a son.
The days passed as usual for Song Hong Yu until she realized that she was being followed by the police at the market. Song Hong Yu desperately tried to escape. Perhaps Song Hong Yu would have been able to escape if she hadn’t run into Zhen Zhen in an alley and been restrained by her.
Song Hong Yu and her accomplices were taken back to Xuecheng in a separate car. The only thing that weighed on her mind was her son. Song Hong Yu believed that she would get out soon and return to take care of her son.
In the courtroom, Song Hong Yu didn’t admit to killing Huang Ying. She knew that Deng Li Gang wouldn’t turn her in because of their son. Because of this, Song Hong Yu was cleared of the murder charge and sentenced to life imprisonment.
In prison, Song Hong Yu worked hard to be an hardworking inmate. She sought rehabilitation to reduce her sentence. That is until she met Yu Jiao. Because Yu Jiao looked like Huang Ying, and she thought that Huang Ying had come back to life.
on the ending, Song Hong Yu blurted out everything. She shouted to Yu Jiao that she had killed her with her own hands and that she was dead. When she came to her senses, a wave of helplessness washed over her. Song Hong Yu’s attempt to reunite with her son was futile.
What Happened to Shi Bi on Drifting Away Ending?
Shi Bi changed his identity to Sun Xue Quan and married a widow with a son named Feng Shuang Huan. They lived in Feng Shuang Huan’s tea shop. All this years, Shi Bi top priority was his safety.
The police came to Feng Shuang Huan’s shop disguised as two regular customers. They waited for Shi Bi to arrive and confirmed that Sun Xue Quan was indeed Shi Bi before leaving the shop. Shi Bi didn’t suspect their identities. Living a good life for years had dulled his instincts.
On the designated day, the policemen, who used to come disguised as regular customers, came and pretended to complain. Shi Bi came out to help his wife. When the police handcuffed him, Shi Bi repeatedly told them that his name was Sun Xue Quan and that he was born in Suilu. It was only when a policeman showed him the photo of his old driver’s license that Shi Bi stopped talking.
Shi Bi cried as he told his wife that their time together was over and that she should not come to see him again.
In prison, Shi Bi couldn’t stop regretting his past actions. Only now does he know what it feels like to fear for the future. Shi Bi was the first to confess to the murders. About the driver’s license he hid in the closet in Bishui’s apartment, Shi Bi said that he didn’t want to throw away the license he had worked so hard to get. He hoped that one day, when he could live a normal life, he would return to his job.
Shi Bi admitted that the first person he killed was his wife. She always nagged him about his job and money, and mocked him for being slow. Shi Bi endured this until the day his mother died. He saw her with another man. When Shi Bi’s wife asked for a divorce, he killed her with a cleaver.
Deng Li Gang helped Shi Bi dispose of the body and comforted him. He said that everyone is like that after their first murder. He’d get used to it eventually. Shi Bi admitted to the police that he felt guilty at first. But they had killed so many people, and he was numb to all those feelings. All these years, Shi Bi confessed that they had killed about 19 people, or maybe more because he couldn’t remember.
Just like Deng Li Gang, Shi Bi was sentenced to death. He cried desperately the night before his execution.
What Happened to Ji Da Shun on Drifting Away Ending?
Ji Da Shun accidentally met a woman whose husband looked like him. He borrowed the husband’s ID and used it to fool the police. He then showed the ID to Deng Li Gang and gave them the idea to hide.
After learning that Deng Li Gang and Song Hong Yu had taken their family into hiding, Ji Da Shun wanted to do the same. But Deng Li Gang stopped him.
Ji Da Shun completely abandoned the idea of reuniting with his family after Deng Li Gang said that since he could send someone to deliver money to his family, he could also send someone to kill them.
Years later, Ji Da Shun was living under the name of Wang Jin Ye. He owns a slaughterhouse (this is a real meat factory) and spends most of his time there. He worked as a butcher. However, his health deteriorated and he was diagnosed with cancer.
When the police came, Ji Da Shun didn’t try to run away. However, he grinned happily all the way. While his accomplices were taken to jail, Ji Da Shu was taken to the hospital, where he lay alone in the ward, closely guarded by police officers.
At the end, Ji Da Shu’s wife and son came to visit him in the hospital. He was angry with his father. Even after Ji Da Shun pleaded for forgiveness, the young man said that his feelings could be summed up in one word: hate. Ji Da Shun died in the hospital a month before the trial was to begin.
My Two Cents
It said, “Keep your friend close, but your enemy closer”. Peng Zhao Lin studied Deng Li Gang for years. He has analyzed his strengths and weaknesses, so he knows him like the back of his hand. And so does Deng Li Gang. To him, Peng Zhao Lin was his greatest enemy. It was not surprising that they could talk to each other like two old friends who asked about each other’s well-being after years of separation.
The one I hate the most in this Drifting Away drama is Deng Li Gang, followed by Song Hong Yu. After all she had done, taking other people’s lives and making their families suffer, she still wanted to have a good life with her son. Fortunately, justice found its way and didn’t let her go.
