Hello readers, I’ve been writing reviews for Cnovelholic.com website for several years now. In the beginning my reviews were simple and short. But then my enthusiasm took over and my reviews got longer and longer. I even had to keep track of my word count because it often got out of control.
A few weeks ago, one of you wrote that my review was too long. I pondered a lot, and a few days ago I decided to follow the suggestion. A long review can be good because it contains more detailed explanations. However, it is also prone to a longer spoiler and longer ramblings… 😆.
So for today’s The Best Day of My Life drama review, I will try to write a simple and short review. As it happens, this drama is a short one, so I don’t think that would be a problem. But probably after I finish Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II To The West, which was a 40-episode drama, writing a review would be another challenge. 😁😁.
Happy reading, dear readers!
The Best Day of My Life Drama Synopsis
The Best Day of My Life is a Chinese romance drama, with 14 episodes long, and played by Zhang Jiong Min as Xie Shi and Jiang Zhi Nan as Xu Mu. Xu Mu worked in the planning department of Shangxin Advertising Agency. She is a talented and hardworking employee who loves her job. But in her personal life, she has hit a hard wall. Xu Mu has just failed her sixth blind date arranged by her mother. Despite her mother’s pressure to get married, she still persists in her singlehood.
Unexpectedly, Xu Mu meets a client who looks exactly like her high school deskmate, Xie Shi. Director Jiang Zhou had a different surname, but his looks and temperament were almost identical to Xie Shi’s. Due to her drunkenness, Xu Mu accidentally announced him as her boyfriend on social media.
Jiang Zhou took the opportunity to form a contractual relationship with her because he needed to create a persona of a steady man. As they spent time together, they became closer. However, Xu Mu is still unaware of Jiang Zhou’s long-standing feelings for her. Will a real relationship ever replace the fake one?
The Best Day of My Life Drama Review
The Best Day of My Life is a short drama with only 14 episodes. The story line is also simple and there weren’t too many actors involved in this drama. It was good that we could all focus on our main characters and the side couple. But because everything was too simple, I found this drama quite boring, and the story was a bit slow. But I managed to watch all the episodes with my hands off the forward button. Yay!
The Best Day of My Life is a slow romance drama even though they started the relationship early. However, Xu Mu and Xie Shi’s relationship was a contractual relationship, so did it still count as a relationship? From the beginning of the story, when Xie Shi stared at Xu Mu, everyone could see that he had been into her for a long time.
Unfortunately, Xu Mu is unaware of this. They started the relationship because Xu Mu needed help to fend off her mother’s pressure about her marriage. Meanwhile, Xie Shi saw this as an opportunity to get close to her and “secretly” claimed Xu Mu as his girlfriend. 😁
I had to admit that Zhang Jiong Min’s acting in this drama was good. He did a good job as the young man who fell in love, because every time Xie Shi looked at Xu Mu, my heart just skipped a beat. 😍
Xu Mu and Xie Shi’s colleagues all believed that they were a real couple. This led to the unprofessional attitude of their colleagues.
Well, is it necessary to make Xu Mu hug the boss client because of the Truth and Dare game? And her colleagues seemed to have the liberty to gossip and tease them. The most hilarious thing was when Xu Mu’s team leader made her sit next to Xie Shi during the meeting.
Like hello! That is the client’s side, and she must sit on the provider’s side, no matter how their relationship was. The writer of this drama needs to seriously consider the lack of professionalism attitude in this drama.
🤦♀️
Anyway, enough with the rambling!
Kind of Light and Simple
The Best Day of My Life is a light youth drama. I would say that because it feels more like a coming-of-age drama than a mature drama. Since the beginning of the story, I’ve been calculating the ages of Xu Mu and Xie Shi. I assumed that Xu Mu and Xie Shi graduated from high school when they were 17 or 18 years old. They reunited 10 years later. So, they were now around 27 or 28 years old.
Although Xie Shi was a director of a company and Xu Mu was an senior employee, their appearance and attitude didn’t match their jobs. To me, they looked like fresh college graduates. If only Xu Mu dressed a little more maturely and Xie Shi acted a little more charismatic, everything would be more convincing.
The plot of The Best Day of My Life drama was easy to guess. Of course, we could predict that the ending would be a happy ending for everyone in this drama. There wasn’t much conflict in the relationship between Xie Shi and Xu Mu.
But of course, we needed some misunderstandings and third parties to make Xu Mu realize her own feelings. The issues regarding Xie Shi’s mysterious past were also necessary for Xu Mu to understand why Xie Shi suddenly went abroad and change his name.
For your information, I always believe what Paolo Coelho wrote in his book The Alchemist. He said, and I quote, “When you want something, the whole universe conspires to help you achieve it. This is true in real life, but Cdramaland always takes it a step further. 😉
Everything about Xu Mu and Xie Shi’s relationship happened mostly by chance. They met by chance because the only empty seat in the class was next to her. They met again by chance because Xie Shi became Xu Mu’s client.
They got into a relationship because Xu Mu accidentally announced them as a couple out of drunkenness. And there were many more coincidences throughout the drama. Fate (or the writer) really blessed them with those coincidences. 😅
But being in this Cdramaland for years made me realize. Some dramas don’t necessarily require deep contemplation. You should just sit and enjoy each episode as if there’s nothing wrong with it. Let’s forget all logic and common sense. Everything would be much better and more enjoyable that way.
Besides the relationship between Xu Mu and Xie Shi, there was also a second couple, Shen Yi and Song Nian Nian. They used to be enemies in high school, but they met again because of work. Song Nian Nian is a writer with the pen name Song Jin Xin. She wrote a romantic novel and the villain in her novel was named Shen Yi.
I think their relationship is more dynamic compared to Xu Mu and Xie Shi. Shen Yi and Song Nian Nian might be too talkative, but they could freely express their feelings and emotions, unlike Xu Mu and Xie Shi who were too reserved.
Inconsistent and A Bit Rushed
Although I said that I understand the lack of common sense in many Cdramas, I still think that characterization is the most important thing. I feel that the personalities of Xu Mu and Xie Shi are somewhat inconsistent. They are quite successful working class people who I believe would think carefully about their actions.
But the way they start, end, and start again their relationship is full of impulsiveness. If it were Shen Yi and Song Nian Nian, I wouldn’t ask so many questions. But Xu Mu and Xie Shi are obviously different from them. Especially Xie Shi.
And I think the ending of this drama was a bit rushed. It feels like a play on the slide. You go up the stairs slowly, and when you get to the top, you slide all the way down fast. And suddenly you were sitting on the ground. This is the best way for me to describe the story of this drama. You can read about this drama ending on The Best Day of My Life ending explained post that I also wrote.
If the production team had just added a few more episodes, I’m sure the execution would have been better. The resolution of the conflicts would be more convincing and not seem like an extra scene.
All in all, The Best Day of My Life drama is enjoyable. The acting is good, but it could be better. Zhang Jiong Ming and Jiang Zhi Nan have a good chemistry on screen. Their acting is quite natural and I like the way they look at each other. And if you felt familiar with Zhang Jiong Ming’s face, you must have seen the drama Hidden Love and Regeneration.
Meanwhile, Jiang Zhi Nan previously appeared in the youth drama When I Fly Towards You as Su Zai Zai’s best friend, Jiang Jia. Wang Chuan, who played the lively Shen Yi, previously appeared in You Are Desire, and he also acted alongside Neo Hou in Dashing Youth. This is the first time I have seen Yan Zhi Chao’s acting. I used to watch her dramas like Romance with Blind Master and Hello Mr. Gu, but I dropped them all.
The Best Day of My Life Drama Characters
Xie Shi / Jiang Zhou
Xie Shi (played by Zhang Jiong Ming) is Xu Mu’s high school classmate. He is a transfer student who happened to sit next to her. Xie Shi is a smart student and popular among the girls. His cold demeanor and lack of words didn’t stop the girls from flocking around him. Although he rarely speaks nice to Xu Mu, he treats her differently and often secretly helps her with her studies.
Xie Shi didn’t stay at her school for long. After his mother died, he followed his aunt abroad and changed his surname after her. When he returned to China, Xie Shi had become the prominent director Zhou of Like Company. But his personality has not changed. He is still a hardworking, gentle, but reserved person. Another good quality that made Xu Mu interested in him is his delicious cooking. Xie Shi knows how to attract people’s interest through food.
Xu Mu
Xu Mu (played by Jiang Zhi Nan) is always full of energy. She loves her job very much and her creative mind has made her one of the most important members of her company. Xu Mu is still very attached to her high school memories because her close friend is Song Nian Nian, also went to the same school with her. Therefore, she still remembers Xie Shi and the feeling of being abandoned because he left without saying goodbye to her.
As a woman of marriageable age, Xu Mu was under pressure from her mother to find a husband. Although she was not a terribly annoying mother like in other dramas, Xu Mu’s mother was still persistent in her efforts to find an ideal husband for her daughter.
To avoid those endless phone calls and blind dates, Xu Mu decided to accept Xie Shi’s proposal of a contractual relationship. Xu Mu had once been in a relationship with an unfaithful man. This might be the reason why she could not easily fall in love with another man. Falling in love with the wrong person made her numb and kept her away from any romantic feelings.
Shen Yi
Unlike other children born into a rich family, Shen Yi (played by Wang Chuan) doesn’t like to brag about his family’s money. He may look silly and immature, but Shen Yi has his own ideas about his future. While his father owned a well-known media company, Shen Yi wanted to run an AI company and develop Nicole, a robot dog that could be used as a service dog.
However, his father didn’t agree with his choice, probably because Shen Yi didn’t seem like a serious person. Because of his silliness, Song Nian Nian also misunderstood his financial situation.
Shen Yi is a lively but hardworking person. He is a kind boss and a good friend. However, his gossiping nature and impulsiveness often led him to make wrong conclusions. In a dire situation, Shen Yi often showed a different side, one that was responsible and calm.
Song Nian Nian
Song Nian Nian (played by Yan Zhi Chao) has been friends with Xu Mu since high school. She is a straightforward person, kind, and always ready to help Xu Mu when she needs it. Song Nian Nian is a bold and fearless person. She has always looked strong and independent.
Song Nian Nian’s most visible trait is her righteous personality. She hated to see anyone being bullied or suffering injustice. Without notice, she would immediately jump in and save the bullied people.
Song Nian Nian always spoke sharply, but her heart was full of compassion. As a novelist, she has a creative mind that often wanders far away. She lived alone, but due to her busy work, she often neglected her well-being, and her house always looked like a mess.
The Conclusion
The Best Day of My Life is a heartwarming drama that has only 14 episodes, so it would not take up too much of your time. This drama has a good love story which more on the young adult side. There was no complicated conflict and the story was simple. The Best Day of My Life is perfect for a light weekend binge.
Through this The Best Day of My Life drama review, I would recommend this one for those romance junkies who don’t care too much about the story substances. Watch this drama without thinking too much and I’m sure you’ll enjoy every minute of it.
