Vanished Name Drama Review - poster

When Ren Xiao Ming decided to take back what belongs to her, an old case resurfaces. A hidden corpse is found, and with it, a long-buried secrets begins to come out. This mysterious case slowly connects the past and the present. And it involved her and several other women, including her mother, best friends, teacher, and many more.

The only clue left on the corpse lead Detective Li Meng to her former classmates. So, she began to investigate Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu’s past. Every clue was pointed at them, but who lied and why?

The Review

Last March, the internet was hyped about Pursuit of Jade. As a romance junkie, of course I didn’t miss it. Then the story ended, my articles were done. And suddenly I felt empty.

I tried to move on with other Chinese romance dramas like Dream of Golden Years and Love Beyond the Grave, but the sparks just wasn’t there. So, I change my strategy and pick something completely different. That is how I ended up binge watching Vanished Name and wrote this article that was tad too long.

There were actually a few options, but I choose this one for a very simple reason. Ni Ni.

In China, there is this term “Four Dan” actresses. They are basically the bankable stars of China. Their reputation and popularity able to guarantee a box office success, lots of attention, and also funding. They were the safe choice for the studios.

Both producers and investors saw them as high value assets. Hollywood has its own version too. My dear readers surely recognize Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Margot Robbie, and Leonardo DiCaprio. You’ll instantly know what you will get when you read their names on the posters.

China has several versions of the Four Dan. The original Four Dan (Xu Jing Lei, Zhou Xun, Zhao Wei, Zhang Zi Yi), then the New Four Dan (Yang Mi, Liu Yi Fei, Liu Shi Shi, and Ni Ni), and then the post-90s generation batch (Zhou Dong Yu, Yang Zi, Guan Xiao Tong, and Zheng Shuang). I’m sure there’ll be more Four Dan actresses later.

Ni Ni, aside from her striking looks, is well known for her acting skills. Her filmography is long and packed. I first noticed her when I watched Bride Wars (2015), a remake of the 2009 Hollywood movie starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. After that, I saw her in The Thousand Faces of Dunjia, Love and Destiny, and Parallel World. And every time, she delivered. 👍🏻

But after watching Vanished Name, I realized that Ni Ni is not the only one who kept me hooked. The whole cast of this drama is incredible. They delivered a wave of raw emotions that stayed with me long after the episode ended.

With them, I cried, I laughed, and sometimes my heart just tightened in a way that I didn’t expect. From Yan Ni as Ren Mei Yan, Cya Liu adult Bai Shu, Liu Min Tao as Ge Wen Jun, to Qu Jing Jing as Detective Li Meng. Each of them added depth to their characters and authenticity to the roles.

The younger actors impressed me just as much. Wang Sheng Di is only 15 years old. Yet her portrayal of young Ren Xiao Ming was perfectly in sync with Ni Ni. Her intense performance captured every layer of pain, anger, confusion, and even happiness.

It was hard to look away from her. Wang Sheng Di didn’t just play teenage Ren Xiao Ming. She made her feel real. You could feel every crack in her soul when you look at her eyes.

Then there’s Han Hao Lin as young He Yu Qiong. You might recognize him from Shine on Me, where he played Nie Xi Guang’s cousin. He is charming and cheerful, exactly the kind of energy that fits He Yu Qiong’s exuberant nature.

Story-wise, Vanished Name is a drama that keeps you guessing in every episode. Don’t be fooled by the synopsis online. The story is much more complex than just a mystery about a hidden corpse found in a school. But if you sit and pay attention, Vanished Name will slowly pull you in.

Although the main focus is on the mysterious corpse, everything connects back to Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu’s past. It traces all the way back to their teenage years. The family dynamics, particularly the mother–daughter relationships, shape the entire story. These seemingly ordinary matters turn out to hold the key to the answers that everyone is searching for.

The story moves back and forth between timelines. Flashback scenes play important role in helping use understand what really happened. The director even changed the color tones between the past and the present scenes, so you could see it clearer.

And through these flashbacks, it becomes obvious how much the past shapes the future. Whether we like it or not, people who cross our path always leave a mark in our souls.

I really enjoyed the friendship of Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu. They’re so different, both in personality and background. Ren Xiao Ming is hot tempered teenager, easily triggered, like a walking firecracker.

But underneath that, she is actually very sensitive. Her emotions laced with insecurity shaped by her upbringing. Bai Shu, on the other hand, grew up with everything she need, except freedom. She is calm, gentle, and sensible. Somehow, their differences fit. And because they both carry their own emotional wounds, I see them as two stray kittens licking each other’s injuries.

Then there’s the love between Ren Xiao Ming and He Yu Qiong. He Yu Qiong was the one who fell first. Meanwhile, Ren Xiao Ming was afraid he would confess to her because she didn’t want to be bothered by love matters. Plus, her mother was… quite scary in that department. 🤪

Their relationship as adults was full of ups and downs. Especially after Ren Xiao Ming went to the college while He Yu Qiong couldn’t, due to family circumstances. But they truly cared for each other. Unfortunately, their love didn’t last. Soon enough they had to go their separate ways.

Cdramas really knows how to capture the best part of teenage love. You probably remember Zhou Yi Ran and Zhang Miao Yi in When I Fly Towards You; Wang Xing Yue and Tian Xi Wei in First Love; Chen Zhe Yuan and Xu Meng Jie in Our Secret; Jun from SEVENTEEN and Zhang Miao Yi in Exclusive Fairytale; and Lin Yi and Zhou Ye in Everyone Loves Me.

Those are some of my favourites. What I love about them is how simple and pure they are. The emotions are raw, intense, and sometimes chaotic, but in a fun way. You should try Everyone Loves Me for this. The moment when Lin Yi realized he rejected his own online crush is hilarious. 😂

That’s what make teenage love so enjoyable to watch. I’m sure my dear readers still remember your first crush or your first heartbreak. Those experiences often became a permanent memory in your mind. It’s a feeling that never fades away.

Because when a teenage loves, it feels that the world is at stake. Adults? They’ve learned to hold back. Mostly to protect themselves. But teenagers don’t. They just jump straight into the pool, even if they didn’t know how deep it is.

And of course, the youthful appearance of Chinese actors also motivated me to watch all the episodes. 😆

Another thing that touched me in Vanished Name is Zhou Yun is as a teacher. She is kind, understanding, and really sees Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu for who they are. She knows their struggles and did everything she can to give them a future.

Vanished Name Drama Review - Zhou Yun
Vanished Name Drama Review – Zhou Yun

Because Zhou Yun understands they need that chance to change their fate. Zhou Yun plays an important role in shaping Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu’s lives. She encourages them to have a dream. Yes, a dream.

To survive, what is the most important thing? Light.
Where there is light is where our hearts yearn to be. As long as there is light, we won’t easily give up our lives.

Zhou Yun reminded me of Hao Nan in Ray of Light drama. Both of them are the kind of teachers who quietly spark something in you. They remind you that your life can be bigger than the place you came from.

And I also loved watching the police team. Li Meng is a solid captain. She is calm and steady while solving the puzzles. There are no dramatic or over-the-top actions, but her interaction with her team felt so natural and comforting.

And it was a nice surprise to see Guan Yun Peng act as Huang Yue, one of Li Meng’s team members. He showed a completely different side compared to his role as the foolish emperor, Qi Sheng, in Pursuit of Jade.

Though Huang Yue still a bit silly… 🤪

Vanished Name blends family, romance, youth, and mystery. The mystery part is the glue that holds everything together. It pulls all the pieces into a whole story that keeps you stay until the end. In a way, Vanished Name, reminds me of that one friend who know everything but stay tight-lipped, just enjoying our curiosity a little too much. 😉

When you watch this show, be patient. The closer you get to the ending, the more complex it becomes. The secrets unravel slowly, piece by piece. You just have to keep it in mind and sew it all together. The closure leans towards a happy ending. But it still leave you breathless with all plot twists, along the way and bittersweet feelings that lingers longer than you expected.

The Story-When the Past Refuses to Stay Silent

Vanished Name’s mystery started with a hidden corpse that was found inside a concrete block. The corpse’s identity was unknown, and the only clue was a red pen buried along with the body.

The answer to the question of who she is, why she was killed, and who the murderer is lies in a diary written by young Bai Shu and Ren Xiao Ming. The diary was then turned into a novel by Liu Xiao Ran, Ren Xiao Ming’s husband. While Ren Xiao Ming tried to deny the diary’s existence, Bai Shu insisted that Li Meng should find it if she wanted the answer to the case. Who lied? And why?

The diary is just like a door to a room. And when it opens, slowly, you begin to see all the things stored inside it.

Let’s start with Bai Shu. She was adopted when she was young. Her adoptive mother, Ge Wen Jun, separated from her husband after their daughter died. Ge Wen Jun is an obsessive and controlling mother. She made Bai Shu a substitute for her dead daughter by giving her the same name and the same birth date.

Vanished Name Drama Review - Bai Shu and Ge Wen Jun
Vanished Name Drama Review – Bai Shu and Ge Wen Jun

Ge Wen Jun treats Bai Shu as her property, like a fish in a tank. Literally. Because Bai Shu’s bedroom was designed like a fish tank, with glass walls, so Ge Wen Jun could sit outside and watch her doing her things, like homework and everything else.

While Bai Shu had to deal with a controlled life and a two-faced mother, Ren Xiao Ming was tired of her biased mother. Ren Mei Yan is a single mother who has to support her daughter and her mentally ill son. She worked tirelessly and was always in survival mode. People saw her as cheerful and optimistic. But beneath that, there was a pool of unbalanced emotions. The tension and exhaustion led to impatience, harshness, and emotional neglect.

Well, now it’s clear that Ren Xiao Ming inherited her hot-tempered nature from her mother. 🤪

Ren Xiao Ming always had complicated feelings for her mother. She loved her, but she also resented her and even felt contempt toward her selfishness. Ren Mei Yan loved her children, but she was visibly biased toward Ren Xiao Fei.

In Ren Mei Yan’s mind, her daughter was strong enough to endure everything, while Ren Xiao Fei was more vulnerable. Their poor situation and lack of support made Ren Xiao Ming grow up as an insecure teenager. She didn’t stay quiet about it. She argued, she complained, she tried to make her mother see her.

But no matter how loud she was, it was like her words never really reached Ren Mei Yan, and that hurt more than being ignored in the first place.

But although Ren Xiao Ming’s family was not without flaws, Bai Shu found her happiness there. The times she spent with the Ren trio were the happiest moments she ever had. She could see that Ren Mei Yan and Ren Xiao Ming loved each other. They were just like two hedgehogs, both covered in thorns, trying to get close but ending up hurting each other instead.

The girls’ lives changed after they met Zhou Yun, their homeroom teacher back in Qidian Middle School. In Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu’s small world, where neither of them couldn’t be themselves, Zhou Yun was the first person who truly saw them.

She didn’t just teach, she stayed, she listened, and she made them feel like they mattered. She gave them hope and gently opened up a world they didn’t know they could have. She gave them a diary, a place where they could finally speak without being ignored or controlled. And with it, a red pen. It has a long history and represents courage. Zhou Yun hoped that the pen could give them the courage to hold on to their own voice.

Bai Shu and Ren Xiao Ming swore to be friends forever. But reality came crashing down. Bai Shu was cornered and threatened by her mother. And for Ren Xiao Ming’s sake, she would do anything, including sacrificing her chance to go to her dream college. Then they were separated ways.

Vanished Name Drama Review – Ren Xiao Ming

While Bai Shu was left in the small city, Ren Xiao Ming also lost her only support. She was lonely and tired. He Yu Qiong helped her up. But Ren Mei Yan disapproved of their relationship. Soon after that, things got more complicated for Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu. Problems come and go. And in the end, they were getting farther and farther away from each other.

As the story goes on, you start to see that everyone is hiding something. Guilt, regret, pain, things they thought they could just bury and move on from. But it doesn’t work like that. Those things don’t disappear. And the longer they keep it inside, the heavier it gets, until it starts to affect everything, whether they realize it or not.

Vanished Name is not just a title. It symbolizes a person who quietly disappears from the world. They could be dead and buried, or worse, still alive but erased. Not by time, but by the people who choose to forget them. And sometimes, those people are themselves.

The Visual-The Hair that Irked Me

I was so immersed in following the story that I didn’t pay much attention to the visual. Overall, everything was fine. There was nothing too special and most of it didn’t really bother me. But there was just one thing that I couldn’t ignore: Bai Shu’s wig. Like come on! there’s no way you couldn’t miss that weird bump in her head. It kept pulling me out of the scene every time she appeared.

And one more thing that irked me. It’s the transition between young Ren Xiao Ming to her adult version. There was a noticeable different in hair length between Wen Shen Di and Ni Ni’s. Actually, it’s not a big issue, but once you notice it, you can’t really unsee it. I keep wondering why they didn’t just make it consistent. Especially when the rest of the transition was done quite well.

The Characters

Ren Xiao Ming (Played by Ni Ni)

Ren Xiao Ming is like a firecracker, ready to explode at any moment. She is a hot-tempered girl who is always tense and insecure. She never had a stable life because she grew up worrying about everything: Her studies, her future, her brother, her mother, and even her best friend.

And even after she found success and made a lot of money as a famous travel blogger, you can still see the pain that has been sitting in her heart for a long time. It’s evident in her lifeless eyes, as if all the happiness in the world had disappeared before her. Leaving only a bitter life.

Ren Xiao Ming may look carefree on the outside, but she is actually very sentimental. She is someone who holds tightly to the past, because that was the time when she truly felt happy. As she grew up, she lost the anchors that once keep her grounded.

The adult Ren Xiao Ming is sharper, more controlled, and a little unhinged. She is still smart, still sensitive, and still determined. But now, she has no tolerance for mistakes, not even the smallest one. And Liu Xiao Ran learned that the hard way.

Ren Mei Yan (Played by Yan Ni)

Ren Mei Yan is the opposite of Ren Xiao Ming. While her daughter is often gloomy and pessimistic, Ren Mei Yan is lively and optimistic, but also careless at times. She loves the colour red and her simple dream is to own a red sedan.

Her resilience is high and to support the family, she takes on all kinds of jobs. From being a caregiver, to selling buns, to working as a spa masseur, Ren Mei Yan will do it all.

Intellectually, Ren Xiao Ming is smarter than her mother. Because of that, she often sees Ren Mei Yan as unreliable. Someone who always come up with ideas that don’t really make sense. But what Ren Xiao Ming fails to see is that behind all those careless decisions is a woman who is simply trying to keep everyone alive.

Even if she doesn’t always know the best way to do it. Ren Mei Yan is not a perfect mother. She is overwhelmed and exhausted, but she keeps going anyway. Because for her, there is no other option.

Bai Shu (Played by Cya Liu)

Bai Shu always felt like she was living as a caged bird, or a fish in a tank. Her life was full of control and rules set by Ge Wen Jun. On top of that, she had to live under someone else’s name and identity, making her yearn for freedom even more.

Vanished Name Drama Review - Bai Shu (Played by Cya Liu)
Vanished Name Drama Review – Bai Shu (Played by Cya Liu)

Without privacy, friends, or any real connection, Bai Shu was deeply lonely. So, when she finally met someone who truly clicked with her like a soulmate, that need for connection floods out. It was her first time being seen as herself. not someone she was forced to become.

For Bai Shu, Ren Xiao Ming represent life, freedom, and warmth. She protected Bai Shu when she was at her lowest. And even though that protection was clumsy, it meant everything for her. Bai Shu is smart and intelligent, but also sensitive and sentimental.

The young Bai Shu was often full of passion. She is someone who still believed in things. but as she grew older, the light slowly faded. She still sharp and brave, but there is a bitterness in her now. As if something inside her has already been worn down.

Ge Wen Jun (Played by Liu Min Tao)

Ge Wen Jun couldn’t stop herself from grieving the loss of her daughter. So instead of facing it, she replaced her. And the poor child was Bai Shu. She forced her to take her real daughter’s name and identity, living under her shadow.

At the same time, she kept Bai Shu on a tight leash, all under the belief that it was for her protection. After her daughter died, Ge Wen Jun separated from her husband. He couldn’t stand her control and wanted a divorce, but she refused.

So now they ended up living separately. And maybe because of those repeated losses, Ge Wen Jun developed an extreme fear of abandonment. Now she started to believe that if she controls everything, no one would ever be able to leave her.

On the outside, Ge Wen Jun maintained the image of a gentle and caring mother. But underneath, she was jealous and paranoid. In her mind, anyone who got close to Bai Shu was a threat trying to take her away.

Even Ren Xiao Ming has become her nemesis, simply because she dared to stand up for Bai Shu. And whenever reality doesn’t match her illusion, she would lash out violently.

Zhou Yun (Played by Dong Jie)

In the eyes of Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu, Zhou Yun is the opposite of their mothers. She is a gentle and understanding person. She listens, she stays, she talks to them without making them feel condescending.

With her, they font have to raise their voices to be heard or shrink themselves to be accepted. For once, Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu can just be who they are.

But Zhou Yun is not as simple as she seems. Behind that calm and warmth, she is also someone who has been running from the past. She teaches her student to be brave, to speak up, to hold on to their dreams. Yet, she still hiding her own truth. and maybe that’s why she understands them so well, because she knows what if feels like to keep living in world that was way to small for her dream.

Liu Xiao Ran (Played by Bao Jian Feng)

Liu Xiao Ran is a university professor with a good reputation. He comes from an educated family and is famous for how devoted he is to his wife, Ren Xiao Ming. They met when she was in college, and he was the one who pursued her. On the surface, Liu Xiao Ran looks gentle and a little bit naïve.

The kind of man people would easily trust. But behind that image, Liu Xiao Ran is far from simple. He is cunning, proud, and manipulative. He wrote “Breathe” not just for success, but because he wanted stand above Ren Xiao Ming, to be more recognized, and more praised. He is greedy for both money and fame.

Even in their marriage, Liu Xiao Ran’s feelings are never as pure as they seem. He holds on to it not out of love, but because he doesn’t what to lose what comes with it. he likes to play the victim, but in reality, he is always calculating his next move. Liu Xiao Ran believes he can outsmart Ren Xaio Ming. and that might be his biggest mistake.

Li Meng (Played by Qu Jing Jing)

Li Meng used to be Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu’s middle school friend. They weren’t that close back then, but they knew each other. Li Meng went to a police academy and now she is a dedicated and determined police officer. She has sharp instinct and a strong sense of justice.

She is someone who knows how to read people and situation without being swayed. She takes her job seriously and has a clear judgement between what is right and what is wrong. In the middle of all secrets and tension, Li Meng feels like someone you can still trust. not just as an officer, but as a person who genuinely wants to help.

He Yu Qiong (Played by Zhou Yao)

He Yu Qiong is cheerful, kind, and sensible. He is also sensitive in his own quiet way. He grew up with a hardworking mother and violent father. So, life was never easy for him.

After school, he would stay at their small clothing stall in the market, helping his mother as much as he could. He was doing his best to ease her burden, even when he was still just a kid.

As a person, He Yu Qiong is simple and steady. He is very patient, even when dealing with Ren Xiao Ming’s temper. He didn’t fight her, instead he listens, waits, and gives in. As a friend, He Yu Qiong is loyal to the core. He might not be loud or impressive. But his kindness is the kind that stays, and you only realize the value when it’s gone.

Zhang Fang (Played by Zhang Juan Yi)

Just like He Yu Qiong, Zhang Fang also went to the same middle school as Ren Xiao Ming and Bai Shu. He even lived in the same lived in the same apartment building as Ren Xiao Ming. Back then, he used to bully her and called her “tagalong”. But as time went by, their relationship slowly changed and they eventually became friends.

Zhang Fang wasn’t the smartest one in the group. But he was kind and straightforward. He might joke around or act careless. But when it really mattered, he was someone you could rely on. He didn’t always know the right thing to say. But he stayed and sometimes, that was enough.

The Conclusion

Vanished Name isn’t the kind of drama that grabs your attention right away. It came quietly, without much promotions and buzz. But still, it’s definitely something you should consider watching. Its strength lies in the solid story and the amazing cast that bring it to life.

I don’t regret the time I spent on this drama at all. The acting was truly impressive, and the story stayed with me even after it ended. It may not be loud, but it leaves a mark inside my heart.

So, dear readers, if you are a mystery lover and looking for something for binge watching this weekend, Vanished Name is a prefect choice. Don’t forget to stack your snacks and drinks next to your seat, because once you hit the start button, you’ll find it hard to stop. Happy watching!
