Dear readers, how are you today? It’s early in the morning as I wrote this, and I hope I can finish this A Splendid Match drama review without disturbances. To prepare for the long journey, I have surrounded myself with drinks, snacks, and everything else that I think I’ll need it while typing.
But I’ve already finished my coffee and eaten 2 pack of snack along with my breakfast. And judging by the speed at which my supplies are disappearing, the real challenge isn’t whether I can finish this article. It’s making sure I still have enough provisions to survive until the conclusion.

A Splendid Match Drama Review
The Synopsis
Since she was one month old, Gu Jin Zhao was sent away after a fortune teller claimed that she would bring bad luck to her father. Raised by her loving grandmother in wealth and comfort, she grows up into a free-spirited woman who refuses to let other dictates her life.
However, an unexpected turn of events forces her to return to home and parents who abandoned her. As soon as she arrives, Gu Jin Zhao must deal with a mother plagued by guilt, a father who wants to take advantage of her wealth, a scheming concubine, and her marriage issues.
Gu Jin Zhao’s vibrant personality catches the eyes of the powerful court official Chen Yan Yun, the marquis heir Ye Xian, and the upright scholar Chen Xuan Qing.
Unlike any other woman of her time, Gu Jin Zhao viewed marriage as a pathway to the future and the life she wanted to live. Once she understands her own feelings, Gu Jin Zhao firmly chooses Chen Yan Yun, who accept her for who she is and respect her desire for freedom.
After their marriage, Gu Jin Zhao gradually grows into a capable wife and trusted partner for her husband. Together, they navigate through the political struggles while working to bring peace and stability for the country and the people.
The Review
I finished A Splendid Match a few weeks ago but only managed to complete this review now. It is one of the Chinese dramas released in May 2026. Real life has been rather overwhelming recently, and I had to deal with that first. I apologise for the scarce updates, dear readers 🙇🏻♀️.
I chose to watch A Splendid Match because I heard so much about the strong chemistry between Ci Sha (The Longest Promise, A Date with the Future, The Blue Whisper) and Ren Min (The Longest Promise, Ray of Light, White Cat Legend).
So, I’m tempted to give it a try. And after I pressed the play button, I forgot everything else. The next thing I knew, I had watched six episodes in a row.
A Splendid Match is based on the novel Liang Chen Mei Jin written by Chen Xiang Hui Jin. This is the same author who wrote The Rise of Ning, although she used a different name.
Well, can you see the similarities between these dramas? And just like The Rise of Ning, A Splendid Match also actually a rebirth story. However, both dramas decided to forgo this part. Making Gu Jin Zhao and Luo Yi Ning are just ordinary girls with stronger instinct and sharper minds.
The first episode of A Splendid Match is a pleasant opener that successfully introduces us to the main characters and their personality. Within minutes, we learn that Gu Jin Zhao is not someone to be trifled with. She is bold, fearless, quick-witted, hot-tempered and more than willing to stir up trouble if it means getting what she wants.
A Splendid Match is one of those stories where the female lead attracts a surprising number of admirers. The most important suitors all appear in the first episode. The first one is the mysterious and powerful Chen Yan Yun, who will eventually become Gu Jin Zhao’s lover.
The second male lead is Ye Xian, the hot-tempered noble heir. The third male lead is Chen Xuan Qing, who didn’t leave a very good first impression on me. And aside from them, there were also some scums in the middle who got beaten up in less than 2 episodes. 😆
While watching this drama, I really got a serious case of Second Lead Syndrome because of Ye Xian. It is true that his temper is unappealing, but his looks definitely aren’t. Especially when he let his hair down and donned that black silk robe. Winwin (Moonlit Reunion, Perfect Match, Snowfall) looking so dashing that I didn’t even bother to blink whenever he appeared. 😍
In the beginning, the story flow was smooth. Everything was done at a perfect pace. The political and familial troubles were woven seamlessly into the romance. It’s a perfect balance that made the story interesting.
As always in Cdramaland, the romance is a slow burn. It took half of the drama for Chen Yan Yun and Gu Jin Zhao to finally get together. She is so strong-willed that someone like him couldn’t convince her easily.
The important point of the relationship between Gu Jin Zhao and Chen Yan Yun is their age gap. When she held her coming-of-age ceremony, Chen Yan Yun was already a high ranking official and a married man. So let say he might have been around 23 to 27 years old.
Then I presume the age gap between them might be 8-12 years. Well, that makes sense why they choose Ren Min and Ci Sha as the lead roles. One looks incredibly young, while the other perfectly fits the image of a seasoned court official while still looking handsome.
In the middle of the drama, as the romance intensifies, the political struggle also deepens. It was easy for me to see who the main villain in this drama was. And I bet you will easily figure it out too, because the villain often has that kind of aura that make you certain he is the one. I won’t tell you who he is. Just let me know if you find him when you watch the show. 😉
One aspect I appreciated is how the characters development written in this drama. Gu Jin Zhao started as a hot-tempered and impulsive young lady and grows into a wise and calm woman, but still formidable.
Chen Yan Yun who always gains respect whenever he goes, learns how to humble himself in front of his wife. Ye Xian who only think about himself, learned to devote himself to the benefit of the country and its people.
And about Gu Lan, I’m glad the sisterhood between her and Gu Jin Zhao didn’t end like it does in many Cdramas. She might be born from an ignorant woman, but she certainly isn’t one. Gu Lan isn’t like the other stepsisters we often see.
I like her personality because she sees things clearly and isn’t blinded by jealousy. Apparently, she is quite calculative and rational. For her, survival is better than empty happiness. But if you wish to see that kind of wicked sister, no worries. This drama still has Gu Lian for that. You can curse her characters as much as you like. 😆
Another anomaly in this drama is the emperor. I’ve watched Ashes to Crown and immediately noticed the stark differences between the young emperors. Well, actually their situations were different to begin with.
In Ashes to Crown, the young emperor certainly wasn’t prepared to sit on the throne because he started as the imperial grandson. He still had his father to take over the position before him. While in A Splendid Match, the young emperor started as the Crown Prince.
He had been prepared for the role from the very beginning. So when he took the throne, his wisdom and mind were far beyond his age. It was quite funny because they didn’t match his rather childish appearance.
You might wonder why I didn’t spend much time writing about Chen Xuan Qing, Gu Jin Zhao’s third suitor. Well, I didn’t like his personality to begin with, and although he did learn his lesson later on, I still didn’t feel sorry for him. Yes, his background is complicated, and it wasn’t his fault. But I’ve never like indecisive and weak characters.
Now, let’s talk about the chemistry between the cast. Ci Sha and Ren Min work remarkably well together. The age gap between Chen Yan Yun and Gu Jin Zhao reminds me of Lu Xing Yi and Luo Shi Yi in The Sword and the Brocade.
However, while Wallace Chung and Tan Song Yun delivered more polished performance, I found the romantic dynamic between Ci Sha and Ren Min more engaging and believable. They really do have a strong chemistry together. 😍
However, A Splendid Match is not without flaws. I just found it before the final. Unlike the slow build-up throughout the story, the ending feels so rushed. As if there were ten more episodes left to explain everything, but they decided to squeeze them into two.
The closure for many characters was handled abruptly. Important development happen so quickly that they barely have time to sink in. One moment a conflict is introduced, and the next it’s already resolved.
It almost feels like this leisurely-strolling-drama suddenly remembered it had to reach the finish line and sprinted towards it. Those emotions that have been building up in my heart for days were weakened by the breakneck pacing.
This is so disappointing that I wish I never got to see the ending. 😭
The Story – The Other Boys Never Stood a Chance
Okay, we all knew that sooner or later Gu Jin Zhao would end up together with Chen Yan Yun. Even if the world collapsed, they would still be THE couple. And why?
It’s the same reason why we all knew that Sleeping Beauty’s Princess Aurora would be saved by Prince Phillip. There would be no Phillippe, Peter, Pedro, Paul, or Patrick showing up later. Only Philip. And their faces were plastered all over the cover. It was quite evident, I supposed. 😁
So, no matter who charming Chen Xuan Qing or how handsome Ye Xian was, it was always going to be Chen Yan Yun in the end. 🙄
Chen Yan Yun is a widower. His wife died without leaving him any descendants. He and Gu Jin Zhao met because of his connection to Old Madam Ji, Gu Jin Zhao’s grandmother.
The Ji family was considered as his subordinate who helped him with the Land Equalization and Tax case. As someone with strong personality, Chen Yan Yun was never interested in a weak woman. He wanted someone with an equal courage and determination.
Because his life was dangerous, he didn’t need a fragile partner. Gu Jin Zhao with her bold and fearless personality, fit him perfectly. Even though in the beginning, he was quite annoyed by her impulsive action, he gradually appreciates her strength.
Chen Yan Yu wanted Gu Jin Zhao to be obedient to him because he wished to protect her in his own way. But again and again, Gu Jin Zhao humbled him. She showed Chen Yan Yun that she also capable of protecting herself and those around her, including him.
Well, he asked for a challenge, so she give it to him. 😆
Chen Xuan Qing and Gu Jin Zhao used to have mutual feelings. They were attracted to each other. However, you knew that they would never end up together because their personality clashes.
Gu Jin Zhao has a strong and bold personality, the complete opposite of the calm and gentle Chen Xuan Qing. His background couldn’t compare to hers, and he was already at a disadvantaged from the start. So, no… a fierce tiger like Gu Jin Zhao needed someone who could balance her.
And Ye Xian, although he was born from a higher-status household, couldn’t match her either. No, I didn’t talk about his heart ailment. I’m talking about how differently they were raised.
Gu Jin Zou has a harsh childhood. His father is a scholar, but he is heartless and selfish. Her mother was weak and was constantly suppressed by a concubine. It was thanks to her grandmother that she was able to grow up in a loving environment.
But still, parents are the first person to leave their mark on their child personality. So, although she grew up into a capable and empathetic woman, she still resembles a fine jade with rough edges. Just like Cheng Shao Shang in Love Like the Galaxy.
Because of her upbringing, Gu Jin Zhao became practical, self-reliant, and aware of how the world works. And that is precisely why she and Ye Xian were never a good match, despite all the similarities between them.
While Gu Jin Zhao is a commoner, Ye Xian is a nobleman. He is connected to the royal family, and his father is a marquis who hold immense military power. Ye Xian grew up under the protection of his parents, especially mother.
Yes, sheltered AND spoiled. He didn’t just grow up with endless privileged handed to him in a silver platter or spend his days throwing tantrum whenever things didn’t go his way. He also lived in a carefully protected world, one where people around him made sure he need to face the harsh reality of the life.
As a result, Ye Xian developed an astonishing lack of self-awareness. He is like a walking bomb that easily explode when someone gives it a little nudge.
But although his character makes me wanted to slap some sense into him every five minutes, I still felt some compassion for him. His sincere affection and slight naivety, especially when it came to matters of love, touch me. And when he finally gained the lost self-awareness, he becomes an accomplished man.
Ye Xian, with his strong personality and intense devotion, deserves a girl who love him back just as fiercely as he loves her. So they can argue like enemies and love like soulmates. Surely that’s not too much to ask, screenwriter?
A Splendid Match give me a great watching experience. In many historical Cdramas, stories about arranged marriages are everywhere. But a marriage built on mutual affection and free from other people’s interference is rare. So I really like this part of the story.
It wasn’t easy for both Gu Jin Zhao and Chen Yan Yun to reach this point. Gu Jin Zhao must fight for her freedom against his father. She had to endure setbacks to obtain it. meanwhile Chen Yun Yan gained his freedom but must exchange it with a cold and distant relationship with his mother.
In the end, their marriage wasn’t based on family arrangements, political interest, or social obligations. It was a result of mutual respect, trust, and the freedom to make their own choices.
For a story set in time when marriages were often decided by others, that alone makes Gu Jin Zhao and Chen Yan Yun’s romance feel refreshing. And honestly, that is the biggest reason why I enjoyed this drama.
One more thing. Where the heck is Niu Niu the turtle? It showed up in the first episode and then vanished for the next 39. At this point, I am convinced that it escaped to start a new life somewhere else and might actually be the smartest character in the entire drama. 🤪
The Visual – Gorgeous Dresses and Questionable Foundation
Aside from the story and the chemistry between our main leads, A Splendid Match is also a fest for the eyes. The sets and the cinematography are perfect. I have nothing to complain.
But my favourite part is the costume. I absolutely loved the costumes, and the accessories worn by the cast, particularly Gu Jin Zhao and Gu Lan. The Gu sisters, especially Gu Jin Zhao, came from a wealthy family, so of course they have to looked like a wealthy young woman.
While Gu Jin Zhao’s headdresses and accessories are beautiful without being overly extravagant, it is her wardrobe that does loudest talking.
She wears a vast variety of colors. One day, she appears in soft pastel shades, the next day she dressed a dark navy blue. Then she showed up in an ombre dress. Either way, I love everything she wears in this drama. And it’s just not her. Gu Lan also has some lovely outfits. I particularly adore her skirt.
The makeup is generally nice and well done, until I look at Ci Sha. His complexion doesn’t do him justice. It was the same in the Rise of Ning and A Date with the Future. In my opinion, the only makeup styling that looked truly natural on him was in The Blue Whisper. Ci Sha already has striking facial features. They should just focus on it rather than altering his skin tone.
The Characters
Gu Jin Zhao (Played by Ren Min)
Gu Jin Zhao is the eldest daughter of the Gu family. Her mother came from a successful merchant family, while her father is an official. Her paternal family, including her father, looked down on Gu Jin Zhao because of her merchant background. However, in time of crisis, her clear mind and quick action help the entire family.
Gu Jin Zhao was trained to make decision quickly and think beyond immediate gains. Rather than dwelling on problems, she focuses on practical solutions and creating opportunities. Unlike any young women in her time, who are taught to rely on their husbands, Gu Jin Zhao managed to position herself as an equal partner for her husband.
She is practical, adaptable, and fearless. When she loves, she loves wholeheartedly. Yet despite her strength, Gu Jin Zhao is not a heartless woman. She will protect and takes care those who treat her with kindness. As for those who wronged her, she makes sure they receive exactly what they deserve.
Chen Yan Yun / Chen Jiu Heng (Played by Ci Sha)
Chen Yan Yun also known with his courtesy name Chen Jiu Heng, is the third master of the Chen family, a renowned scholarly family. Among his siblings, Chen yan Yun is the one who has achieved the most. Since he was young, Chen Yan Yun has been a calm, composed, and perfectionist man.
He is highly intelligent, broad-minded, and deeply principled. Everything he did is guided by his desire to bring peace and prosperity to the country and its people.
However, despite being nearly invincible when it comes to strategy and martial arts, Chen Yan Yun is surprisingly simple when it comes to the matter of heart. He could manoeuvred schemes and court intrigued easily. But jealousy is something that he cannot fathom and deal accordingly.
Ye Xian (Played by Winwin)
Ye Xian comes from a noble military family. As the sole heir of the Changxing Marquisate, he was expected to carry on the legacy. Unfortunately, Ye Xian suffers from a heart ailment. This condition prevents him from following his father’s footsteps as a military officer.
Not can he pursue the demanding path of an official. Behind his lazy, entitled, arrogant, and selfish exterior lies a remarkably intelligent man. With military blood running through his veins, Ye Xian can be ruthless when it needed.
He is also a straightforward, competitive, and fiercely protective of the people he cares about. His loyalty to the emperor and the county is unquestionable. Emotionally, Ye Xian struggles with vulnerability because he was afraid of it. In a way, he shares some similarities with Gu Jin Zhao.
Gu Lan (Played by Huang Yi)
Gu Lan is the illegitimate daughter of the Gu family. Born form concubine Song, she is also Gu Jin Zhao’s younger sister. Although her mother is a calculative woman, Gu Lan grew up to be far more rational and level-headed. Unlike Gu Lian who rarely use her brain, Gu Lan knows what is good for her.
Personally, Gu Lan is an observant person, straightforward, and focused on what needs to be done. She is a woman who knows when to strike and when to step back. She may not always make the right choices, but she rarely acts without thinking.
Chen Xuan Qing (Played by Zuo Ye)
Chen Xuan Qing is adopted child of Fifth branch of the Chen family, making him Chen Yan Yun’s nephew. However, it was actually Chen Yan Yun who brought him into the family. Therefore, Chen Xuan Qing regarded Chen Yan Yun as his uncle, father figure, and mentor.
In his presence, Chen Xuan Qing often restrains himself because he is somewhat intimidated by his uncle’s seriousness and authority. Aware of his own background, he grows up burdened by insecurity.
However, although he was raised under Chen Yan Yun’s guidance, Chen Xuan Qing never fully inherited his broad vision and wisdom. Making him lacked patience and foresight needed to see the bigger picture.
Ji Yao (Played by Zhang Yao)
Ji Yao is Gu Jin Zhao’s cousin. They grew up together since childhood and share a bond that resembles that of real siblings. And although Ji Yao didn’t really harbor romantic feelings for Gu Jin Zhao, he would do almost everything to protect her.
Ji Yao possesses a sharp business acumen and a talent for spotting opportunities where others saw only obstacles. While he was raised by a petty and narrow-minded mother, he was fortunately influenced by Old Madam Ji, his grandmother and Gu Jin Zhao’s. For him, nothing is more important than his grandmother, the Ji family, and Gu Jin Zhao.
Fu Hai Lian (Played by Wu Gang)
Fu Hai Lian is Chen Yan Yun’s teacher and one of the most influential officials in Yan. As the Senior Grand Secretary, he holds immense political power and serves as the driving force behind of the New Tax Edict. He is also someone whom Chen Yan Yun held in high regard.
Fu Hai Lian was widely known for his intelligence, strategic mind, wisdom, and extensive network of connection. However, he also known for his distrust of the nobles and military factions. This is a stance that places him at the centre of the political conflicts.
The Conclusion
A Splendid Match is a drama that has its own kind of charm. The story is intriguing and the build-up is great. However, I also have some dissatisfaction with this drama, especially when it comes to the rushed ending. So, I decided that when I rewatch this one, I’ll stop before the ending. 😆
I wanted to recommend this drama to those who have a steady heart and are ready for heartbreaking moments. A Splendid Match would definitely be your cup of tea. So don’t forget to clear your agenda this weekend and get ready for a roller coaster of emotions. And if you find yourself emotionally attached to a certain second male lead, well… consider this as a warning. 😆
