Dear readers, how are you today? It was so hot in my place right now, that I had to sit with a cold milk tea at 11 AM. The good thing about hot days like this is that I could stay indoor without feeling guilty. My to-do list and groceries could wait but staying hydrated definitely can’t.
That also means I finally had the chance to gather my thoughts for today’s Road to Success drama. I have a few things I want to share with you on this review. So, grab your favourite drinks and make yourself comfortable. Let’s get started. Happy reading!
Road to Success Drama Review
The Synopsis
Lin Wan Xing’s life faces a setback when she is implicated in a tragedy. Her reputation is ruined, forcing her to abandon her Ph.D. program. Following her grandfather’s last wish, Lin Wan Xing returns to her hometown and takes a job as a sports equipment room’s attendant at Hongjjing No. 8 High School.
Just as she’s adjusting to her new routing, the sport director gives her a mission: become the football team’s manager and lead the school to the Youth Super League, even though the team was already disbanded two years ago.
Her first task is to gather the former players and persuade them to rejoin the team. It isn’t an easy job because the boys are still disheartened after losing their chance to do what they love the most, football.
This mission also brings Lin Wan Xing to Wang Fa, a former football club coach in England who’s haunted by guilt and trauma over the death of one of his players. Lin Wan Xing convinced Wang Fa to join her and become the students’ head coach.
Together, they guide the team through fierce competition, personal struggles, and the pressure of school exams. Along the way, Lin Wan Xing and Wang Fa begin to develop feelings for each other.
Yet, when old wounds resurface, they were driven apart once again. Will they be able to overcome the obstacles, strengthen the bond between them, and still lead the team to victory?
The Review – Where Heart Takes the Lead

Road to Success is a drama about healing journeys. There were many lessons to learn in this one. It reminds us that moving forward isn’t always about running faster, but it’s all about finding the courage to take the next step.
Sometimes, the hardest part is not chasing a dream but rediscovering yourself after you’ve lost your way. Nobody said it will easy. It takes pain, sweat, and tears. But in the end, it’s worth it. This is the message that stays with me long after the end credit rolled.
So, with the spirit of World Cup 2026, I started watching this Road to Success drama with excitement. Do I like football? Nah! Do I like the excitement? Absolutely!
Maybe it’s also because football had been everywhere lately. Although the World Cup already ended (Congrats Spain 🇪🇸!!), it was hard not to get swept away by the excitement. Especially this year, when there were so many stories about underdog team like Cape Verde of Curaçao.
Even if you’re not a die-hard football fan, it’s almost impossible not to catch a glimpse of the passion and determination that make the game so addictive. And surprisingly, I found the same feelings in Road to Success.
This drama immediately reminded me of Nothing but You, a 2023 sports drama starring Wu Lei and Zhou Yu Tong. It has the competition, the fields, the boiling blood, the dripping sweat, and that irresistible youthful atmosphere. It’s the kind of drama that makes you want to cheer even when you barely understand the rules of the game. At least, that’s what happened to me…😅
Lately, I’ve also been rewatching Speed and Love for two reasons, Yu Xu Shin and He Yu. I wanted to compare their performances with their latest dramas, Road to Success and Blossoms of Power.
For Yu Shu Xin, I was especially curious about her voice. You see, Yu Shu Xin or Esther Yu has received a lot of criticism for her childish voices. I’m obviously not one of them because I’ve watched every single of her dramas since 2021.
Moonlight, Love Between Fairy and Devil, A Romance of the Little Forest, My Journey to You, Sword and Fairy 6, Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, Ski into Love, and Speed and Love, you named it. I even watch A Writer’s Odyssey where she only played as a guest role. FYI, aside from Moonlight, you could read their review in this website.
Back to the voice. 😉
Aside from her childish voice, Yu Shu Xin’s appearance naturally complements it too. So that’s why, she fits perfectly as the naïve Fairy Orchid (Xiao Lan Hua), the spoiled Jiang Mu in Speed and Love, Wei Zhi in Ski into Love, or the flirty Yu Mei Ren in A Romance of the Little Forest. Those dramas really leaned into her youthful image.
However, there was one drama where she stepped out of her comfort zone, My Journey to You. This is where she appeared alongside Zhang Ling He as Yun Wei Shan, an assassin. Well, did the voice changed? Surely not! LOL
But honestly, it was refreshing to watch her play someone so cold, composed, and emotionally restrained. It proved that she could do more than just bubbly and cheerful characters.
In my opinion, Road to Success continue that direction. Not the kind that was spoiled and flirty archetype because Lin Wan Xing might look like a calm, gentle, but playful teacher, but in reality, she hides so many scars and trauma in her mind.
And although Lin Wan Xing isn’t as icy as Yun Wei Shan (she still collects blind boxes!), she is definitely much more mature than many of Yu Shu Xin’s previous roles.
And I really think that she loves smart characters. In A Romance of the Little Forest, Yu Shu Xin acted as a girl who hold an Ph.D. degree in ornithology. In Road to Success, she is a Ph.D. student in Psychology department of a highly prestigious uni. I guess she wanted to show the world that you could be as pretty as Amal Clooney and as smart as Amal Clooney. 😉
Speaking of performances, I think Chen Jing Ke is perfect as Wang Fa. His brooding face fits the grumpy coach character so well. Sometimes, it felt like he didn’t even need to act.
Just standing there with that permanent “don’t bother me” expression already screamed Coach Wang Fa. Yet beneath that cold façade, you could slowly see the caring mentor underneath. And I really enjoyed watching those layers unfold.
The best thing aside from the romance in the story is the friendship. There was a strong camaraderie between the players, between Fu Xin Shu and Wen Cheng Ye, between Wang Fu and Yu Bo. And also, a strong sisterhood between Lin Wan Xing and Ju Li.
Between the players, their relationship grew naturally through training, competition, and overcoming problems together. While their rapports with Lin Wan Xing and Wang Fa were warm and emotional. I just loooove to see how close they were. How they willing to open up to Lin Wan Xing and Wang Fa showed how big their trust towards their teacher and coach.
For Wen Chen Ye, things were more complicated. He is a talented player, but there was a hidden story behind his arrogant nature and sarcastic remarks. He holds grudges towards Qin Ao for years, and this is become the biggest obstacles not only in the team but also in his heart. The rift between him and the rest of the team member was one of the hardest problems that the whole team, Lin Wan Xing, and Wang Fa must face.
However, there were somethings special when you see the bond between Fu Xin Shu-Wen Cheng Ye and also Lin Wan Xing-Ju Li. Their attachment wasn’t just a simple friendship, because I can feel there’s unspoken affections from Wen Cheng Ye towards Fu Xin Shu and Ju Li towards Lin Wan Xing.
Sadly, the story didn’t explain further. But if you watch this drama, I’m sure you might feel that way too because it was so obvious to see.
And of course, I must mention the cutest part of the drama.
Watching the eleven teenage boys (yes, I’m counting Wen Chen Ye too even though his contribution was… none 🤪) trying so hard to matchmake their teacher and coach was absolutely adorable.
They were probably more invested in Lin Wan Xing and Wang Fa’s love story than the couple themselves. Every little scheme they came up with made me smile.
Well, in my opinion, the strongest part of the story didn’t lie with the romance. The real heart of Road to Success lies in the football team and everything they went through together.
Team sports naturally teach many things about cooperation, adaptation, trust, and tolerance. But this drama add another layer: healing.
Everyone carried their own burdens. Every character in this drama, even the cheerful Yu Bo, had personal struggles they needed to overcome before they could truly move forward. Because in the end, winning isn’t only about techniques and strategies. The strongest weapon is the mentality.
If your mind is already defeated, even the best strategy won’t save you. A single provocation, one moment of panic, or one crack of confidence can destroy the entire team. Ultimately, Road to Success use football as the medium to tell a much bigger story about resilience, trust, and learning to stand up even after falling.
However, I also still have some disappointment left for this drama.
There were many promising ideas to explore, but most of the only stayed on the surface. Take Lin Wan Xing’s relationship with her parents for example. Since the beginning of the drama, there weren’t many scenes about them. only several glimpse of flashback.
It was enough, though, to guess how things go between them. Not the best parents-daughter relationship I supposed. But should I stay guessing on the end too? I need some closure.
Some satisfying resolution. And I kept waiting for a conversation that never came. It was ironic because Lin Wan Xing helped her students to deal with their parents. But there’s nothing about hers.
I was also curious about what exactly happened during the two years before she returned to Hangjing. The story mentioned that period of time, but never really explore it. And I also thought this is the very first drama that treat the villains as passerby who didn’t need a thorough explanation. I don’t think I knew much about him.
It almost felt like the screenwriter assumed that viewers either wouldn’t care enough to ask questions or have too many dramas to watch so they didn’t care about details. But no. This lady is very curious. I need answers! 😩
Then, several supporting characters suffered the same fate. Ju Li and Yu Bo, for instance. Ju Li appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the drama. She used to be Lin Wan Xing’s schoolmate. Their friendship spanned for years.
But the story didn’t talk much about her and even though I really wanted to see more of her rivalry with Wang Fa, she didn’t get much screen time for it. It could have created an interesting sisterhood vs romance dynamic. And how this relationship would affect the friendship.
And then Yu Bo, Wang Fa’s best friend/agent/future brother-in-law. I expect so much for his love story. Yet, all I got is a jokester. Same goes with Wang Fa’s family members. His mother played by Gong Bei Bi, a very good actress. But I only saw her in one episode for less than 15 minutes. It’s such a shame.
The romance itself was also predictable. The love story between Lin Wan Xing and Wang Fa was sweet. However, I could already guess where everything was heading quite early on.
Perhaps my expectations were simply too high after delving into too many Cdramas and Cnovels filled with twist, misunderstandings, and emotional rollercoaster. Nothing was particularly bad, but it didn’t surprise me either.
Despite my disappointment, I really enjoyed spending my time with this drama. It wasn’t an intense drama with unforgettable, over-the-top romance and conflicts like Amidst a Snowstorm of Love.
But Road to Success warmed my heart with its story about people who slowly putting the broken pieces of themselves back together. Seeing the boys rediscover their dream and work hard for them felt rewarding. And perhaps that’s why Road to Success stayed with me. Not because who won the final match, but because the characters in it.
The Story – of Scars and Second Chances
Road to Success tell a story of teacher Lin Wan Xing and coach Wang Fa. It would’ve been much easier if the story were only about their budding romance and the hardships they had to overcome before finally ending up together. But would that be interesting? Surely not.
Let’s add some mental health issue before we enter the main theme. Lin Wan Xing is a Ph.D. student majoring in Psychology. She is exceptionally smart and really knows her field.
But then tragedy strikes, and she has to leave her work and everything behind for the sake of dignity. It all happened because her professor killed himself and left a note addressed for her.
People immediately labelled her as his mistress, and no one believed her side of story except her grandparents. Following her grandfather’s last wish, Lin Wan Xing begins working at the same school where he once worked as a teacher.
Later, as she enters the world of sports, Lin Wan Xing gets to know Wang Fa. Beneath his cold and brooding appearance lies a gentle man burdened by guilt and trauma. It becomes so severe that he has to soak in the bathtub in a dark room just to escape the constant noise and unforgettable memories in his mind. He also suffered from insomnia.
Wang Fa’s trauma stems from witnessing Jason’s death. He is a young and talented athlete. But someone leads him astray and Wang Fa doesn’t trust him.
Jason is devastated and decided to suicide by jumping down from a building. He dies in front of Wang Fa. Unable to bear the guilt, Wang Fa resigns from his position as a coach at the prestigious Southampton Youth Academy (Viki translation, the original is Nanton) and returned to China.
Two people with scars often drifted into each other, and this is where the story prepares them for a life-changing events ahead.
But putting a football team between Lin Wan Xing and Wang Fa isn’t enough to bring them together. They needed more convincing reasons to cross path. And that connection had to be compelling, emotional, and above all, mysterious.
So, enter the Queen of Spades. No one know who he or she is, but Wang Fa suspects that Queen of Spades is Lin Wan Xing. This is the sole reason why a former world-class football coach, willing to lead a struggling team like the Hongjing football team.
And that’s exactly why I was glued to my seat, waiting for the secret to be revealed. 😎
However, the mystery never completely overshadows the coming-of-age aspect of the drama. Road to Success is still about a group of teenagers trying to figure out their dream.
Since the story revolves around a group of high school boys, I had expected to see some difficult parents or family members along the way. And Road to Success didn’t disappoint.
Fu Xin Shu’s mother took advantage of his son. She lies and keeps asking him for money over and over again. Qin Ao’s father genuinely believes that beating his son is for Qin Ao’s own good. But in reality, he just refuses to trust him.
And then Wang Fa said something that stuck with me the whole time. It’s about how the things parents said can shape a child’s entire life. A father might say something like “Never come back, if you run away again,” or “You’re nothing without this family” out of a moment of anger that lasted only a few second. But the child will carry those scars for years.
Although Lin Wan Xing guides the team using her expertise in psychological techniques, she doesn’t realize that the team is also helping her rediscover herself.
She, who came as an unmotivated person and only interested in slacking off, slowly turned into a dedicated teacher. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing her character undergo personality development.
And I love how Lin Wan Xing never tried to confront the team head-on. She agrees with whatever they say while quietly guiding them toward what they truly want. Once they finally make a decision, she supports them wholeheartedly.
Lin Wan Xing could empathize with what they’re going through because she understands their struggles. She was once in their shoes too, not trusted by those closest to her and eventually gets abandoned by them.
However, there something that didn’t quite add up for me. After Jason’s death, Wang Fa spent months investigating the Queen of Spades, and eventually every clue led him to Lin Wan Xing.
His investigation was so thorough that he even knew tiny details about her, like how she didn’t eat cilantro, always craved for spicy foods, and loved fireflies. But somehow, he completely misjudged the person behind all those details. If the investigation was detailed enough, shouldn’t it also have revealed Lin Wan Xing’s actual personality?
Apparently not. So, he was completely baffled when he discovered that Lin Wan Xing loves children and willing to risk herself to save them. All this time, Wang Fa believed that the Queen of Spades is a person who ruthless enough to drive someone into his death.
How could someone so gentle and kind become a villain who killed people. This is the big question in the first half of the drama.
Unlike most Cdramas, where we’re introduced to the villains right from the beginning, Road to Success did the exact opposite. I had to wait a very long time before the ruth is finally revealed.
Surprisingly, I didn’t mind at all. In fact, I must admit that this drama did a very good job of concealing it. Unfortunately, once the mystery was revealed, I felt the suspense disappear and this drama turns into a fairly ordinary youth drama.
And if you wondered about the ending, fret not. Road to Success delivered a satisfying closure. And if found it genuinely satisfying because it didn’t end like a fairy tale. Instead, it feels grounded in reality.
The Visuals – Where Bed Hair Doesn’t Exist
While there were no special things about the visual, I must say the sets were arranged in a very detailed manner. The rustic Lin family apartment, the chaotic equipment room, and even Wang Fa’s polished and sophisticated downtown apartment all reflected their owners.
But the one that really caught my eyes is Li Wan Xing’s grandparents’ house. It has the old-house charm. The yellow walls, the aged green door and windowsills, and the overdecorated living room looked just like in your old grandma’s house. It felt warm, lived-in, and full of memories.
And I also found the lighting setup in this drama really pleasing and easy in the eyes. The director and his team really did a great job in Road to Success.
Whether the scene was indoors, outdoors, in the morning, during the day, or at night, you could always see the character’s faces clearly. This is sound like a small thing, but it really matters to me. And I really appreciate what this drama gave me.
But like any other idol dramas, don’t expect realism from the main characters. Lin Wan Xing wakes up with perfectly arranged hair and flawless makeup. She wears crop tops and sleeveless tops to teach while Wang Fa is almost always in shirt and suit pants combo.
Definitely unlike the ordinary teachers and coaches that we see in everyday life. At this point, I guess it’s just something you have to accept when watching Cdramas.
The Characters
Lin Wan Xing (Played by Yu Shu Xin)
Lin Wan Xing is a very determined and creative person. She enjoys competition but when she is competing with Wang Fa, she often refuses to play by the rules. She doesn’t like sports and knows almost nothing about them.
Becoming a football team manager is a completely new experience for her. And instead of giving up, she finds her own ways to solve problems. Lin Wan Xing is incredibly resilient and persistent. But once she sets her mind on the team, she’ll keep trying until she finds a way to make it work.
When she came to Hongjin, Lin Wan Xing hid her pain, struggles, and sadness behind her calm and friendly façade. But if you looked into her eyes, you could still see them there. Even so, she would do anything could do to support her students wholeheartedly.
FYI, Lin Wan Xing used to spend a year in England so she also has an English name, and it’s Esther Lin. 😅
Wang Fa / Winfred Wang (Played by Chen Jing Ke)
Wang Fa is a very capable coach. He still in his early 30s but is already coaching a prestigious club abroad. According to Lin Wan Xing’s reading, Wang Fa is a loner, socially reclusive, obnoxious, and withdrawn.
In a word, he is an extremely difficult person. But Wang Fa is also talented, rational, strategic, and disciplined. He looked like a very difficult person to approach, but underneath that façade, he is an attentive, loving, gentle, and warm.
Wang Fa can cook and loves tidiness. His house is practically the opposite of Lin Wan Xing’s overcrowded rooms. Initially Wang Fa is a hard to read, but like an onion, after you peel back his layers, you begin to see how thoughtful and caring he really is.
The more you get to know him, the easier it becomes to understand why the people around him are attached to him despite his prickly personality
Yu Bo / Felix Yu (Played by Ma Bo Qian)
Yu Bo is Wang Fa’s only best friend and also his agent. By now, he is already immune to Wang Fa’s prickly personality. Yu Bo looks like an unreliable person, but he is actually very good at his job.
He hides his determination and talent behind his wacky fashion sense and laid-back personality. Yu Bo is a cheerful and brings happiness to everyone around him, as long as you are also willing to be annoyed by him.
Ju Li (Played by Xie Ke Yin)
Ju Li is Lin Wan Xing’s long time best friend. They used to be desk mates in middle school and met again at Hongjing No. 8 Hingh School, where she works as a physics teacher.
Despite graduating from an Ivy League university, Ju Li choose to return to Hongjing for Lin Wan Xing’s sake. Ju Li is protective but kind and gentle, and especially attentive to her friend. She always wanted to make sure Lin Wan Xing lives a good life and find a good love
Chen Jiang He (Played by Dong Li Wu You)
Chen Jiang He is the first student introduced in the drama. He plays as the team’s striker. Passionate, talented, but also short-tempered.
Chen Jiang He tries to hide his disappointment and sadness behind that sullen face and sharp clapbacks. But when you get to know him better, you’ll see that he is just an ordinary teenager aspiring for his dream.
Qin Ao (Played by Zhu Bo Yan)
His friends call him Boss. Qin Ao is a short tempered but very protective of his friends. Yes, he is basically a ticking time bomb. But whenever someone needs help, Qin Ao is always the first one to step up. He is not the smartest member of the team, but he is well-liked by everyone.
When he’s in a good mood, Qin Ao is funny, kind, and surprisingly easy to get along with. He is stubborn, yet he never afraid of offending others for a righteous reason. Just like Chen Jiang He, Qin Ao also played as striker in the team.
Fu Xin Shu (Played by Liu Jun)
Fu Xin Shu used to be the team’s captain. He is a very positive person and always try to see things from different perspective. Well… actually, he is the definition of a people pleaser.
He always tries his best to keep the peace among the team members. Everyone trusts him as their leader, and he’s willing to do anything to help them. Compared to his teammate, Fu Xin Shu is mature, gentle, and especially considerate.
Wen Cheng Ye (Played by Yan Yu Chen)
Wen Cheng Ye is the newest team member. He is a transferred student, so he wasn’t part of the team at first. Wen Cheng Ye grew up in a wealthy family. However, his father is very controlling and demanding. Wen Cheng Ye is a smart and responsible person.
And it was obvious that football is his true passion. However, when it comes to the football team, Wen Cheng Ye always keeps his guard up. He is rude and constantly throws snide remarks at the team. Yet he also watches them practice with interest he can’t fully hide.
The Conclusion
Road to Success is a perfect drama to watch on a summer weekend. With a glass of watermelon juice and a bag of chips, you could watch this drama alone. However, watching it with a friend is even better. It’s light, heartwarming, and easy to binge.
Making it the kind of drama that leaves you smiling and content by the time the end credits roll. Just be careful not to spend your entire weekend on the couch. Because once you press the Play button, it was hard to resist the Next button 😆.
