Cang Xuan wanted the throne to protect his loved ones. Xiao Yao did her best to support him, including marrying the man she didn’t love. Tushan Jing, who still had her in his heart, could only shed tears.

Things changed after Fangfeng Bei suddenly showed up to steal the bride. Now, the relationship between the four of them was back to square one. But the repercussions of their intertwined destinies could change the whole world.

And at the end of her journey, who will walk beside her? Is it Cang Xuang, the Lord of Dahuang; Tushan Jing, whom she loves with all her heart; Xiang Liu, who secretly protects and loves her; or Chishui Feng Long, an upright man who is also her current fiancé?

Lost You Forever (Season 2) Drama Review

After keeping this review in my file for several days, I finally made up my mind and finished it in one go. This drama is exactly as I expected it to be and unexpectedly so. Although the ending is far from what I wanted, I totally agree with Xiao Yao’s choice.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review - Xiao Yao
Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review – Xiao Yao

The Ballad of Broken Hearts. Personally, I would give this dark drama a new title. As if Lost You Forever was not enough to remind you of its grim story and the tragic lives of its characters. Xiao Yao’s dream was shattered in the first season and now in the second season she had to face another broken heart and loneliness.

For those who are just starting to get interested in this drama, Lost You Forever Season 2 is a continuation of Lost You Forever Season 1 (I also wrote Lost You Forever (Season 1) drama review and Lost You Forever (Season 1) ending explained). You should watch the first season of this drama because it is different from the Sword and Fairy series, which you could watch as a stand-alone drama.

Lost You Forever was supposed to be a long drama like Love Like the Galaxy or The Blue Whisper. However, due to government regulations that limit the number of episodes in a drama, it must be divided into two seasons. The second season must be aired at least 6 months after the first season. Therefore, we as viewers have to wait patiently for a year to find out who Xiao Yao would choose as her husband. For me, it was a very long time that I gradually lost my interest in this drama.

Unlike the first season, this second season left me with less of an impression. By the end of the last episode, I had completely forgotten what Xiao Yao did in the first episode. In this season, Xiao Yao and Cang Xuan dominate the screen. Especially Cang Xuan. He always seemed to be everywhere.

The main conflict of this season is the political issues of the Xiyan Kingdom, and Cang Xuan’s main goal was to unify Dahuang. But it wasn’t just that. In this season, we could see Cang Xuan’s obsession with Xiao Yao.

Whenever Xiao Yao left, Cang Xuan would always appear in an inconspicuous corner. But she did not seem to notice. In my eyes, the Great King’s impression has been reduced to that of a mere stalker and a lovelorn man. His possessiveness has also increased several notches.

Cang Xuan’s expression was almost the same throughout the episodes. He always looked sullen whenever Xiao Yao was around another man, smiling in a way that didn’t look like a smile. Jealousy was written all over his face, but how come there were only two people who noticed it?

Cang Xuan is a ruler with talent and a promising future. He has chosen his path and dedicated himself to creating a peaceful era for the country. So even if you hate his actions, like marrying women he clearly didn’t love to support his power, or starting a war with the neighboring country, you will find a justifiable reason for his actions. Like “Well… he clearly had no other choice for the sake of world peace”.🤷‍♀️

The character development was clearly visible in Xiao Yao. In the Lost You Forever first season, I could feel her bitterness and how she always put a protective shell around herself. Xiao Yao would never let anyone into her heart because she had to protect herself from heartbreak.

But in this season, Xiao Yao is no longer the strong Wen Xiao Liu. She is no longer the respected Haoling Jiao Yao. She is now a commoner and the sister of Cang Xuan. She has opened her heart to Tushan Jing. All her rough edges have been softened. She looked a bit weak, but her heart was still as stubborn as ever.

In this drama, time seemed to move slowly. Xiao Yao and the others lived a very long life. For them, it felt like just a moment in time. I just realized how long it was when Xiao Yao met Tian’er, the young and beautiful courtesan who was married to Skinny. She already has 4 children, 10 grandchildren and great grandchildren. It’s a pity that Tian’er’s old makeup looked very unnatural to me.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) Cinematography

Lost You Forever Seasons 1 and 2 were filmed simultaneously. So the cinematography is similar. I love watching Lost You Forever because of its beauty. Breathtaking images of Poinciana trees and Mount Jade are still visible in this season.

I miss Wen Xiao Liu’s little cottage in Qingshui Town. Xiao Yao no longer lived there, but we got a glimpse of it when Xiang Liu visited the house. Now in S2, all we see are the palaces and Chenrong Mountain, where Xiao Yao and the Great Emperor live.

But some things still made me frown. For example, the CGI of Chubby, Xiang Liu’s mount. It still looked off. And (again) Xiang Liu’s residence, the oyster shell. Why did he have to live in an oyster shell? Now, every time I saw an oyster shell, I thought of his incongruous but futuristic portable home.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) Wardrobe

The costumes are still great. Cang Xuan’s robes really steal the show. Since he became king, he often wore dark colors, and only wore a light-colored robe when he visited his grandfather in Chenrong Mountain. The embroidery on his robes is perfect. I love how exquisite his costumes were.

This season, Xiang Liu/Fangfeng Bei was not the only one who stole my heart. Chishui Feng Long appeared on screen a lot. And they have almost the same style of structured robes that accentuate their beauty.

Well, I guess I was fixated on him because of his beauty and not just because of his costumes. 😍

Once again, we could see Xiao Yao wearing male robes as she returns to her old profession as a physician. And I have to talk about Xiao Yao’s three wedding dresses. Xiao Yao’s first wedding dress for her marriage to Chishui Feng Long was suitable for a marriage between a chief of a great clan and a princess, and it has all the grandeur it should have.

The intricate embroidery on the dress and the exquisite crown say it all. On the contrary, her third wedding dress is the simplest. Because Xiao Yao is getting married in her status as a commoner and no longer as the princess of Haoling. She didn’t wear a crown, just a headdress and hairpins.

The second wedding dress is very much to my liking. The white dress and red cape’s design is simple. But it was the crown that captivated me. The whole ensemble is a perfect balance between glamour and simplicity.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) Cast and Crew

This drama did not disappoint me. The cast and crew worked hard to make it happen. You could see their hard work and I really appreciate it. Yang Zi is still the one who shines the brightest this season. Followed by Zhang Wan Yi. Her performance when Xiao Yao tried to kill Cang Xuan made me feel very emotional. But the most painful scene for me was when Xiao Yao cried incessantly when she saw her parents’ shadow disappear.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review – The Cast and Crew

Xiao Yao had lived for centuries with a voice in her head telling her that her parents had abandoned her. When it finally dissipated and she was reunited with them, they had to disappear forever. The way Yang Zi cried and called for her mother broke my heart.

Zhang Wan Yi did a good job as the jealous Cang Xuan. His pursed lips and sullen face can be seen throughout the episodes. However, through the emotions shown on his face, we could see how his heart was in torment.

The emotions of sadness, happiness, anger, fear, helplessness, despair, and schadenfreude were mixed in his face. Even though Cang Xuang suppressed all his emotions, you could feel each and every one of them from his expressions and gestures.

Tan Jian Ci didn’t have as many scenes as I had hoped for. Honestly, after watching the whole story (Season 1 and 2), I was kind of confused about Xiang Liu’s role in this drama. His story and the Chenrong Army seemed to be unrelated to the whole plot.

I thought his character would do something more for Xiao Yao instead of just being attached to the poisonous love bug. However, I still love Tan Jian Ci in this drama. His cold demeanor as the demon really piques my curiosity.

I feel that the acting of Wang Hong Yi and Deng Wei is rather flat compared to the intense acting of Zhang Wan Yi and Yang Zi. In fact, their characters are rather two-dimensional. I was hoping for something explosive from them, but it’s all in vain. Wang Hong Yi’s soft features are perfect for his role as Chishui Feng Long. However, when he put on the armor, Wang Hong Yi’s handsomeness level increased.

All in all, my opinion about this drama is still the same as it was in the first season. Lost You Forever S1 and S2 are a perfect collaboration between the writers, directors, scriptwriters, cast, and production team.

Although the story was not as fascinating as the first season, I had a good time watching Lost You Forever S2. Now I will finally be able to read the novel that I have been bookmarking for almost a year. I was tempted to read it before, but I didn’t want to spoil the fun of watching Lost You Forever S2.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) Story

Lost You Forever S2 started with a little reminder of our characters’ previous story in S1. Although they released Lost You Forever Special Edition as a short summary of the previous season, 10 episodes is still too much for me. A quick glimpse like this is good enough to refresh my memory.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review - The Story
Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review – The Story

Xiao Yao is still drowning in her broken heart over Tushan Jing. I feel that even though Cang Xuan was also sad to see her condition, he also felt some schadenfreude because it meant less love rival. The sadder Xiao Yao became, the more she depended on him. And the closer they became, the more he didn’t want to lose her.

Xiao Yao might be a naive person who could not see the fiery emotions in Cang Xuan’s eyes. Besides us, the audience, there were two other people who could see his love for Xiao Yao. Her grandfather and Chishui Xin Yue.

And I thought, “Finally! It was so crystal clear. But how come no one noticed how Cang Xuan treats her differently?” 😆

Chishui Xin Yue’s jealousy opened the door for another trope. The harem battle. It was a bit of a cliché, but with Cang Xuan’s immense power, it is inevitable. Cang Xuan ended up with two queens, which I thought would lead to long-standing animosity and harem intrigue. Both queens were determined to put their family and clan ahead of Cang Xuan.

And there was no way that the harem would always be peaceful, especially when it came to the position of the heir to the throne. But there’s no need to add another season for them, because there were already too many dramas about palace intrigues and harem fights 😉.

Although this drama was way too heavy compared to Season 1, I still found some consolation in the interaction between Xiao Yao and Xiang Liu. Even though Xiang Liu is a nine-headed demon and a ruthless war general, his interaction with Xiao Yao is the most hilarious.

Xiao Yao always had a line that made me laugh out loud. In Season 1, she asked about Xiang Liu’s nine heads. How did it grow, and were the heads lined up horizontally or vertically, or did they fight for food?

This time, Xiao Yao made funny remarks when Xiang Liu pretended to forget a song. Xiao Yao said, “With nine heads, and you still forget things?” only to be smacked on the head.

Another example is when he suddenly appeared in front of her, Xiao Yao had to pinch his face to make sure he was real or not. When Xiang Liu could guess what the King of Haoling was thinking, she responded, “Nine heads think better than one. 😂😂

I really hope that Xiao Yao ends up with Xiang Liu. He may seem an icy person, but I could see that whenever Xiao Yao was with him, she was unrestrained. She could speak her heart out and do whatever she wanted. And if she needed a drinking buddy or just wanted to go bar hopping, Fangfeng Bei was always ready to go with her.

In my eyes, Xiao Yao’s feelings always wavered between Ye Shiqi (yes… it was not Tushan Jing, but Ye Shiqi) and Xiang Liu. However, Tushan Jing is already married to Fangfeng Yi Ying, and Xiang Liu is Cang Xuan’s enemy.

Xiao Yao has always regarded Cang Xuan as her brother and an important family member. She never thought otherwise and was blind to his affection. Xiao Yao didn’t cry for Chishui Feng Long, even though she walked down the aisle with him.

The political theme of this drama is intensified in S2. Cang Xuan tried by all means to fulfill his grandfather’s wish for a unified kingdom. To achieve this, Cang Xuan must be willing to make more sacrifices. It means marrying more women from important clans (I have no idea when his harem grew to several concubines) or waging a war.

One thing that makes Lost You Forever different from other dramas is that there were many good emperors in one drama. I was so used to seeing many bad emperors in Cdramas, but it was rare to see several good emperors in one. Cang Xuan is a good and talented ruler. He was able to make the best use of his people.

Cang Xuan is also a broad-minded and visionary leader. He knew what he wanted and how to get it. And he was not alone. The Great Emperor also a good emperor. And don’t forget Xiao Yao’s father, the King of Haoling. He was a very gentle father and a kind emperor.

These three emperors were nothing like the obnoxious emperors in Cdramas like Vin Zhang’s Yin Zheng in The King’s Woman, Yin Zhu Shen’s Qu Jing in Fighting for Love, or Peter Ho’s Murong Gao Gong in Unchained Love.

I thought all my questions in S1 would be answered in this season. After reading my old review, I realized that there were still some questions left unanswered. In the end, we finally got the answer about Xiao Yao’s husband and her true background.

However, I didn’t get the answer for her special constitution and the rare weapon hidden in her body. I’ve been waiting for the answer to my question in S1. But I didn’t get the answer at all. Did I miss anything, dear readers?

Lost You Forever (Season 2) Characters

Xiao Yao / Wen Xiao Liu / Haoling Jiao Yao / Xiling Jiu Yao (Played by Yang Zi)

Xiao Yao (played by Yang Zi) has a new identity as Xiling Jiu Yao. She followed her mother’s clan and family name. She is still the most determined person with a strong mind and unbending will. All these traits were forged in a difficult situation for years.

After falling in and out of love, Xiao Yao’s bitterness returns. She treats others kindly, but in the end, she closes her heart to no one. Even Cang Xuan could see it and it hurt him as well.

Xiao Yao knew that she was happiest when she became a doctor and manager of the Rejuvenation Hall. So this time, she put on a man’s robe and returned to be Wen Xiao Liu, the doctor. She also made a new project of writing a medical book about herbs, medicines, and disease treatments.

Cang Xuan

Cang Xuan (played by Zhang Wan Yi) is a Xiyan prince who grew up in the Haoling Kingdom. He addressed the King of Haoling as his master and considered Xiao Yao and Ah Nian as his sisters. After he became the ruler of the Xiyan Kingdom, his uncles opposed him.

Cang Xuan managed to get rid of them easily without any bloodshed. Cang Xuan may have looked young, but his wisdom and vision can be compared to a seasoned emperor like his grandfather and master.

However, Cang Xuan still lacked in emotions. His predecessor knew that sitting on the throne required sacrifice. Cang Xuan was still stubborn to get everything he always wanted: Xiao Yao and the throne that could help him protect her.

Tushan Jing

Tushan Jing (played by Deng Wei) is the leader of the Tushan family, a very wealthy business family in Dahuang. He is a gentle and soft-hearted person.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review - Tushan Jing (played by Deng Wei)
Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review – Tushan Jing (played by Deng Wei)

Tushan Jing’s love for Xiao Yao never wavered. He knew very well that she only accepted Chishui Feng Long’s proposal of marriage for Cang Xuan’s sake. He also regretted their unhappy relationship due to his grandmother and Fangfeng Yi Ying’s plot. Therefore, on their wedding day, Tushan Jing cried when he saw Xiao Yao.

Although Tushan Jing looked too meek and sickly, he was very smart and insightful. Tushan Jing knew that something was wrong with his marriage and his son Tushan Tian. So he continued to investigate the past events. He still hoped to marry Xiao Yao one day. Tushan Jing was not someone who liked to argue or bicker. He would agree to anything Xiao Yao said.

Personally, I think if Xiao Yao and Tushan Jing got married, they would certainly have a beautiful marriage full of sweetness. But isn’t it a bit boring to be with someone who always agrees with you?

Xiang Liu / Fangfeng Bei

Xiang Liu (played by Tan Jian Ci) is a Nine-headed Serpent Demon, he was still powerful and still ruthless. Due to Xiao Yao’s poisons, his blood is the most poisonous in the world. There is no antidote. Xiang Liu is still loyal to his foster father, Hong Jiang, and still keeps his promise to be with the Chenrong Army until the end.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review - Xiang Liu / Fangfeng Bei (Played by Tan Jian Ci)
Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review – Xiang Liu / Fangfeng Bei (Played by Tan Jian Ci)

For years, Xiang Liu has secretly watched over Xiao Yao. He never stopped loving and protecting her. Through their linked hearts, he knew when she was sad or hurt.

But except for Fangfeng Bei’s offer to take her with him to travel the world, Xiang Liu never asked for anything more. He knew very well that he could never let go of the Chenrong Army and his foster father for his own sake. Therefore, it was highly unlikely that he ever thought about their future together.

Chishui Feng Long

Chishui Feng Long (played by Wang Hong Yi) is well versed in government and military affairs. He became the right hand of Cang Xuan. Chishui Feng Long is a kind and righteous man who is gentle, open-minded, and tolerant. The Chishui Clan is a royal clan of the fallen Chenrong Kingdom. It is an old and important clan in the entire Central Plains.

Lost You Forever (Season 2) drama review – Chishui Feng Long (played by Wang Hong Yi)

As a brother, Chishui Feng Long cared so much for Chishui Xin Yue. He also carried the burden of her clan on his shoulders. Chishui Feng Long was a good potential husband for Xiao Yao. It was too bad that they didn’t have mutual feelings. Even though Chishui Feng Long was willing to take her as his wife, his feelings for Xiao Yao were not too deep.

Chishui Xin Yue

She is Cang Xuang’s first queen in marriage. Chishui Xin Yue (played by Wang Zhen) had been in love with Cang Xuang for a long time. Her brother had reminded her that the road wouldn’t be smooth because a king must have a harem. However, she still chose to become his wife. Chishui Xin Yue’s identity as a descendant of the Chenrong royal family is suitable to be a queen.

However, after she realized that the marriage life with Cang Xuan was far from her expectations, she became a bitter and jealous woman. Chishui Xin Yue could sense that Cang Xuan’s feelings for Xiao Yao were different from what he showed to the world. Therefore, she always saw Xiao Yao as a strong love rival.

Chishui Xin Yue’s narrow-minded personality was the result of her bitter life experience as a hostage in Xiyan Town for 120 years on behalf of her brother. She lived in constant fear. As a result, she grew up to be a woman obsessed with power and longing for a happy, loving marriage.

The Conclusion

Lost You Forever Season 2 is the last part of the Lost You Forever drama series. For those who watched Season 1, this is the answer to our long wait. Finally, we got to see who will be Xiao Yao’s husband in the end.

Watching this drama, I cried a bucket of tears. The story of Lost You Forever is heavy and dark. Especially this season 2, where the political issue and the love issue became more and more complicated.

So if you decide to watch this, be prepared for the heavy atmosphere. This is not the light entertainment you needed after a long and hard week. However, if you wanted to cry and needed a solid reason to do so, this drama would certainly help you.

All in all, dear readers… this is the end of this review post. I hope you read this Lost You Forever Season 2 drama review with a grain of salt.
