The Review

Every time I started a Ren Jia Lun’s drama, the same question pops into my head: “How much emotional damage am I signing up this time?”

All this time, Ren Jia Lun’s dramas have always been on my must-watch list. There’s something about him that hooks me until the last episode, especially in his historical dramas. However, most of his iconic roles are the one that emotionally destroyed me. So, forgive me if I remembered the pain more than the actual statistics. 🤪

And for those who also asked the same question, let me tell you right in the beginning. I wouldn’t call this a happy ending, but I wouldn’t call it sad either. It’s one of those endings that leaves you sighing instead of crying. I didn’t get what I wanted, but I got enough hope to walk away with a smile. So, worry not, dear readers. This drama is not a disguised tragedy. 😎

Fate Chooses You shared the same universe with Liu Xue Yi’s A Moment But Forever and Zhao Lu Si’s Love of Thousand Years. Although Fate Chooses You was released last, it actually tells the story of events that took place long before the timelines of A Moment But Forever and Love of Thousand Years.

These three dramas were adapted from the novels of the same author, Shi Si Lang. And as a bonus, you could see Liu Xue Yi and Zheng Ye Cheng as the guest actors in this drama.

Those who love the xianxia genre would love Shi Si Lang’s works as she wrote many xianxia stories. Aside from the dramas above, she also wrote Cheng Yi’s Love and Redemption.

I was waiting for three more dramas to be aired, The Eternal Fragrance (starring Song Wei Long and Ju Jing Yi), Ban Chen Feng Yue, and Xiao Hun Dian. We still have to wait for more updates about the last two TBA dramas.

Honestly, this drama has its ups and downs. Watching the beginning of the story is interesting because this is where Lu Qian Qiao and Xin Mei met and got married. Then their complex relationship began after Lu Huai’s death.

Fate Chooses You Drama Review - poster 2

Some parts of this drama are quite boring to me, but the second half of the drama really hooked me until the end. There were many plot twists, and surely there were death that made me cry my eyes out. But hey, this is Ren Jia Lun’s work of art, he loves to take part in a heavy plot drama. 😁

Fate Chooses You isn’t just an ordinary romance. Those who loves action drama would love the fighting scenes because they were visually impressive. There were so many characters involved, and the story mentioned many immortal sects.

This is quit a torture for someone like me who easily forget who’s who. However, Fate Chooses You really showed how good Shi Si Lang as an author is. She managed to create such a layered story that rich enough for viewers who enjoy complex plots, while still delivering sweet romance that is satisfying enough for romance junkies like me.

It took some time for me to understand the whole story, but I enjoyed the journey. There were times when I found myself rewinding some scenes because I want to watch them again for the nth times. But of course, there were also scenes that tempted me to push the fast forward button.

But no, I didn’t do it. Skipping scenes in a complicated story like this is just asking for trouble. Sooner or later, I would have to go back and rewatch them because I have missed an important piece of the puzzle.

Fate Chooses You portrays the complexity of the cultivation world. And in the middle of it are Lu Qian Qiao and Xin Mei. Both were immortals, yet they held compassion for humans. In their world, that kind of trait is rare.

Most immortals looked down on humans because they were powerless. The cultivation world thrives on the principle that strength is justice. This captures the brutal hierarchy where power determines everything.

Lu Qian Qiao’s compassion for humans stemmed from his bloodline. He was born to a war demon mother and a human father, so he understood both sides.

Meanwhile, Xin Mei’s heart was already full of compassion from a young age. She grew up surrounded by kind people, and that shaped the person she became. Even her master Xin Xiong, who appeared unreliable, was a man with a strong sense of justice.

Perhaps that’s why Lu Qian Qiao and Xin Mei were drawn to each other. Beneath all the misunderstanding, secrets, and conflicts, they shared the same values. They believe that lives should not be measured by strength alone. Humans, immortals, or demons, everyone deserved the same compassion and respect.

Xin Mei used to say that she was blessed with the ability to cultivate and gain power. Therefore, she must pay for it. To her, power comes with responsibility. If she had the strength to help others, then she should help. if she could stop an injustice, then she should not turn away. While many cultivators saw power as a privilege, Xin Mei saw it as a duty.

I personally believe that a good story must have a lesson to teach. And in Fate Chooses You, Xin Mei is the lesson.

Yes, the same Xin Mei who often looks naïve. But that is not the point. 👀

I have talked about Ren Jia Lun quite a lot since I have reviewed many of his dramas. But I don’t remember ever talking about Wang He Run, although she has appeared in so many dramas over the years.

Well, that is probably because she often played supporting roles in dramas such as Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace, Legend of Fu Yao, The Longest Day in Chang’an, or Mysterious Lotus Casebook. Last year, she played one of the main roles in Footprints of Change alongside Cheng Lei and Tong Yao. Unfortunately, I ended up dropping the drama.

At first, I thought her character would be some kind of damsel in distress. Mainly because Xin Mei’s cultivation level was much lower compared to everyone around her. And to be honest, Xin Mei didn’t look very reliable in the first episode. 😆

However, as the story progressed, Xin Mei proved that she was gentle but far from weak. Wang He Run captures this side of her beautifully. She did a great job portraying Xin Mei’s determination to protect the world and all its inhabitants while staying true to her principles.

There were moments when a simple look in her eyes said more than a dialogue could. Her performance made Xin Mei feel like a real person rather than just another fantasy drama heroine.

As for her chemistry with Ren Jia Lun, it wasn’t the kind that immediately jumped off the screen. Instead, it developed gradually as their characters grew close throughout the story. And honestly, I think it suited the story better.

By the time Xin Mei and Lu Qian Qiao’s relationship reached its peak, I feel a sense of satisfaction that these two characters were truly meant for each other.

Now, I still have to say something about Ren Jia Lun. I think he did a wonderful job as Lu Qian Qiao. Yes, he has played many cold and reserved characters in his acting career, but this one feels a little different.

Ren Jia Lun managed to capture Lu Qian Qiao’s sense of wonder as he slowly discovered the beauty of the world. One of my favorite moments was when he stood completely mesmerized by the color on Xin Mei’s dress.

He was so absorbed that he didn’t even realise she had fainted and fallen to the ground. There was also the scene where he watched a group of butterflies with the same unblinking fascination. Ren Jia Lun made these simple scenes feel so natural and believable.

Ren Jia Lun also did an excellent job portraying Lu Qian Qiao’s emotional growth. At the beginning, he seemed detached from everything around him. But as the story progressed, I started to notice subtle changes appeared in his expressions and body language.

Watching Lu Qian Qiao gradually learn joy, curiosity, love, and even heartbreak becomes one of the most satisfying parts of this drama. And I couldn’t forget his excitement when he finally began to taste food as it was meant to be tasted.

The way he savoured every bite was surprisingly touching. It was such a simple thing, yet it perfectly showed how much his world has changed. And honestly, some of those scenes were enough to make me hungry too.

This whole first experiences remind me of He Si Mu’s experiences in Love Beyond the Grave drama. 😎

The main cast of Fate Chooses You is not just Ren Jia Lun and Wang He Run. The drama also features Zhang Kai Ying, Fu Wei Lun, Wang Yi Lun, Sun Ze Yuan, Huang Yi, Zhang Yi Go, and Ding Xiao Ying.

Among them, I was really impressed in Fu Wei Lun’s performance as Meishan Jun and Zhang Kai Ying’s portrayal of A Sheng. The one that left the least impression on me is Ding Xiao Ying. But that’s more because I didn’t like her character, Lv Yun Su, at all. 🤪

Meishan Jun is the only mortal in the group, and Fu Wei Lun did a great job highlighting the differences between mortal and immortal. You could immediately recognize him as an ordinary human because everything about him is so natural and grounded.

Meanwhile the rest of the characters has some kind of aloof aura around them, including Xin Mei. That contrast give Meishan Jun a unique charm that was hard to ignore.

A Sheng is a complex character. She carries so many unsolved grievances from her past and the burdens that weighed heavily on her heart. She is torn between love and the pain she cannot let go of.

No matter how hard she tried to move forward, it always held her back. Her relationship with Jin Lun only makes her struggles even more heartbreaking. The feelings between them never truly disappeared, but neither could escape the painful fate.

Zhang Kai Ying did a good job bringing A Sheng’s emotions to life. You could see clearly her suppressed emotions and frustrations on her face.

A Sheng always put a “don’t disturb” sign on her face when she was alone and a tense expression when she was with Jin Lun. But everything changed the moment she was with Xin Mei. Her expression softens as if the wall has come down. Zhang Kai Ying managed to capture that duality beautifully.

I really enjoyed this drama because the whole cast did a great job. Even the supporting characters left a strong impression on me, especially Xiao Shun Yao, who delivered strong acting skill in the finale. This is surely because the hard work of the director, Guo Hu.

He is also the creative mind behind many xianxia dramas such as: A Dream Within a Dream, A Moment but Forever, Only for Love, Tiger and Crane, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Immortal Samsara, One and Only, Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, and Love and Destiny.

Well, forgive me for the excessive advertisement. I just want to show that good drama isn’t always who is written on the cast list. Sometimes, the most important name is the one hidden in the credits that most of us are too impatient to read. 😉

The Story – Were Heaven, Earth, and Fate Collide

Before you start watching the drama, there are a few things you need to understand about this world.

In this story, the world is not only inhabited by humans, animals, and plants. There are also immortals. They are humans born with immortal perception, which allows them to cultivate by joining immortal sects.

Fate Chooses You Drama Review - poster 3

On the surface, they look no different from ordinary people. However, immortals lived longer lives and aged slowly. Immortals still could be hurt, sick, or died. But they are able to heal themselves using the energy and techniques they learned from their own sect.

Then we got demons. They derived from animals or plants spirits that absorbed spiritual energy from their surroundings. And when the spiritual energy in their body is enough, they could gain awareness and become a spirit.

Later, they could gain human form and do what a human could do like speaking, eating, drinking and so on. But remember, they also have feelings and thoughts. This made some of them are kind and some are dangerous.

The third race is the War Demons of Zhangui. They were different from ordinary demons. War Demons looked exactly like humans but possess extraordinary physical strength and could cultivate much faster than humans.

Their bodies can recover from injuries in a lightning speed, and their blood can heal wounds. However, there aren’t many war demons left in the world after the Battle of Pinghu. That was the battle between immortals and war demons when they attempted to rebuild the collapsed Heavenly Ladder.

And the last one is the gods. They reside in the heavenly realm far above the mortal world. The only way to reach them was through the Heavenly Ladder. But after the ladder collapsed, immortals could no longer ascend to godhood, while the gods themselves couldn’t descend to the earth.

Some gods played an important role in advancing human civilization. One of them was the Goddess Wushuang, who was famous for creating magical tools. Those tools powered by divine craftsmanship and a touch of magic.

For example is the flying ship. It was built like a real ship, complete with a hull, bow, deck, and so on. The difference was that it could soar in the sky instead of sailing across the sea.

After the Heavenly Ladder disappeared, many of Wushuang’s creations were lost, leaving only small knowledge, stories, and a few surviving relics. However, humans realized that her knowledge were important for the civilizations.

Some of them devoted themselves to preserving and spreading the knowledge, even though they faced opposition from the immortals. They feared that if human civilization continues to progress, immortal will gradually lose their influence and eventually become irrelevant.

Immortals, war demons, and even humans all seek for immortality. They wanted power, a longer lifespan, and a chance to ascend into godhood. And why is becoming a god is such a temptation? Simply because gods are divine beings with superpowers. They stand above all living creatures and are capable of shaping the fate of the world.

The only way to reach godhood is through the Heavenly Ladder. And when it collapsed, no one could ascend into the heavenly realm. Even those cultivators and war demons with high level of cultivation were helpless about it.

Fate Chooses You reveals that immortality is not as glorious as they seem. Behind it, there are sacrifices, betrayals, ambitions, and countless deaths. Because many people often forget that power always comes with a price.

The Visuals – Through Light and Color

In my opinion, the best part of Fate Chooses You is its cinematography. I love how the camera constantly plays with different angles. It makes simple scenes feel more dynamic and visually interesting.

Fate Chooses You Drama Review - The Visuals
Fate Chooses You Drama Review – The Visuals

The lighting can be a little excessive at times, but it did a great job in mimicking natural light. Another thing that impresses me the most is the use of color. One of my favorite scenes is in Episode 8, when Lu Qian Qiao sees color for the first time.

After viewing the world in monochrome for centuries, the sight of Xin Mei’s bright red dress feels especially striking. Later, when Lu Qian Qiao realized he made a terrible mistake, the colorful world slowly fades back into monochrome. Now it feels as if all the color has been drained from it, along with his regret.

The Characters

Lu Qian Qiao / Lu Huai (Played by Ren Jia Lun)

Lu Qian Qiao is a war demon with powerful physiques. He also lived a very long life. Over the years, Lu Qian Qiao had lived under many identities. Xin Mei knew him as Lu Huai, the official from Wei County.

And some people recognized him as Fenghong Yidao, the realm’s top martial artist. Besides being a powerful cultivator, Lu Qian Qiao is also a talented painter. His paintings are highly valuable. He also a good physician that could heal people.

Lu Qian Qiao has spent most of his life in loneliness. He is calm, reserved, and a quiet person. He rarely reveals his thoughts or emotions, including to the closest person in his life, Chu Ying. Still, he is a good teacher and well versed in strategy and governance. Lu Qian Qiao born to a war demon mother and a human father.

Both were dead, making him the last one in his family. While the world sees war demons as bloodthirsty monsters, he proves otherwise. Beneath his cold exterior lies a gentle and empathetic soul.

But, if necessary, Lu Qian Qiao could kill without batting an eye. Meeting Xin Mei becomes the greatest happiness in his life. She brings the first splash of color to his bleak and empty world.

Xin Mei (Played by Wang He Run)

Xin Mei is a young cultivator from Xin Xie Manor. Unlike any other sect with hundreds or thousands of disciples, Xin Xie Manor only has three people: the master is Xin Xiong and his two disciples, Xin Mei and A Sheng.

Fate Chooses You Drama Review - Xin Mei (Played by Wang He Run)
Fate Chooses You Drama Review – Xin Mei (Played by Wang He Run)

Xin Mei is actually a talented cultivator with a strong sense of justice. The problem is that she cannot stand unfairness. Whenever she sees something wrong, she tends to meddle in. While her intentions are good, this habit often put her in trouble because an immortal shouldn’t interfere in mortal affairs.

If they did, they would suffer from backlash. This is the main reason why her cultivation level is still low even after years of study. Xin Mei is a gentle and kind soul. She might not so bright, but her hold on to her principle tightly. She is honest, courageous, protective, and responsible. And most of all, she is a selfless person, a trait that rarely found on her fellow cultivators.

A Sheng (Played by Zhang Kai Ying)

A Sheng is Xin Mei’s junior sister. Although Xin Mei is considered talented, her cultivation still far behind A Sheng. Despite joining the sect much later, A Sheng quickly surpassed her senior sister.

A Sheng is a tough, blunt, reserved, and difficult to approach. only when she is around Xin Mei, A Sheng behaves like an obedient junior sister because Xin Mei is the only person she listens to. But when she is around everyone else, A Sheng can be quite intimidating. Even their master often quarrelled with her. With her sharp tongue and fiery temper, A Sheng is definitely not an easy person to deal with.

Jin Lun (Played by Wang Yi Lun)

Jin Lun has not officially become a disciple of Tianyin Mountain because he has yet to cross the Path of Severing Emotions. Therefore, he always introduces himself as unaffiliated cultivator.

Jin Lun is easily recognized because he has a golden lotus mark on his forehead. He travels across the martial world searching for both his path and the woman he loves. At first glance, he seemed gentle and easy going. The truth is that he is incredibly stubborn and emotionally distant.

People who knew him would say that he is a serious, aloof, and reserved person. However, whenever A Sheng involves, Jin Lun tends to throw his logic out of the window. He would do anything for her, even if it costs him his life. Jin Lun firmly believed that A Sheng is his tribulation.

Meishan Jun (Played by Fu Wei Lun)

Meishan Jun is a bounty guard from Dongzhou Prefecture. He was famous by the name Lord Rust-Sword because his sword remains rusty no matter how many times he sharpens it. Although he has a hight martial arts skill, Meishan Jun is not a cultivator.

He is just an ordinary mortal. Therefore, he didn’t have the aloof and detached attitude that many cultivators have. Instead, he is warm, friendly, talkative, and full of energy.

What makes Meishan Jun interesting person is because he is brave, clever, resourceful, and always willing to take risk. He thrives on adventure and never hesitate to throw himself into one whenever opportunities arises.

Lin Mu Han (Played by Sun Ze Yuan)

Lin Mu Han is the young master of the Lingji Mountain and the son of the sect leader. The first time you see him, you might mistake him for a wealthy young noble from the capital rather than a cultivator. He is often seen carrying a folding fan wherever he goes.

Lin Mu Han is arrogant, but he is also playful. He may bot be the smartest person in the group, but his loyalty is unquestionable. Throughout his journey, Lin Mu Han went through plenty of hardships and learns painful lessons. Those experiences gradually help him mature and become a more dependable person.

Zuo Ying Ying (Played by Huang Yi)

Zuo Ying Ying is a disciple of Qinghong Sect from Beixiang (North Xiang). She is a young lady with dangerous allure, who enjoy teasing handsome men. Zuo Ying Ying is easily recognized because she is beautiful, bold, and never afraid to speak her mind. Her presence is hard to ignore.

However, beneath all that flirtatious charm, lies a clever and observant woman. She knows how to read people and can quickly figure out what others are thinking or trying to hide.

Jiang Ji (Played by Zhang Yi Ge)

Jiang Ji is the disciple of Lingji Mountain and Lin Mu Han’s junior sister. And like him, she carries herself with plenty confidence and pride. She can be cocky and hot tempered at times, but she is also someone with strong principles and sense of duty.

Jiang Ji hates being defeated and will do anything to make the other party pay for it. She is also fiercely loyal, especially to the people she likes. Once she considers someone a friend, she will stand by their side no matter what happens.

Bai Zong Ying (Played by Xiao Shun Yao)

Bai Zong Ying is the talented disciple of the Tianyuan Sect, the strongest sect among the twelve immortal sects. As the direct disciple of the sect leader, Bao Zong Ying is famous throughout the cultivation world for his exceptional talent.

He is proud, disciplined, and places great importance on righteousness and principles. At times, he can be cold, distant, and a little rigid. However, he could also be gentle and genuinely kind to others. Perhaps, this is the reason why he becomes Xin Mei’s love interest.

Lv Yun Su / A Xing (Played by Ding Xiao Ying)

Lv Yun Su is young mortal girl whom Xin Mei and Meishan Jun met during their journey to Chongling Valley. Although she is unable to speak, Lv Yun Su could communicates through sign language.

The closest person to her is her loyal bodyguard, Li Si. Lv Yun Su is gentle, soft-spoken, and physically frail young lady. She suffers from a heart condition and desperately needs the Immortality Pill to cure her heart ailment.

The Conclusion

Fate Chooses You is a very good choice for those who like a heavy and complicated plots. Yet, the sweet romance between Xin Mei and Lu Qian Qiao managed to balance everything and made this drama an enjoyable experience.

Don’t worry too much about the ending. Even though it was either happy or sad, I personally managed to move on just fine. Honestly, this ending is even better than The Demon Hunter’s Romance’s closure.

So if you decide to watch this one, don’t forget to stock your snacks, drinks, and maybe some eye creams. Take your time to enjoy all the fun. And be prepared for a long and slow journey of Lu Qian Qiao and Xin Mei’s love story. Anyway, I hope you find this review of Fate Chooses You useful. Until next time, happy watching!
