Dear readers, I’m so excited to write about this Bloom Life drama review. It’s been a long time since I watched something this artsy and thoughtful. Usually, my chosen drama will have me spending my nights chasing plot twists, screaming at the screen, or furrowing my eyebrows and questioning the life choices of the fictional characters.

But this time, I found myself thinking more seriously and even reflecting on my life. Well, after you read this Bloom Life review post, you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Now, without further ado, let’s get started. Happy reading!

Bloom Life Drama Review

The Synopsis

Bloom Life is a story about three women who reunite at their hometown, the old town of Kashgar. It’s the place where they spent their childhood together, sharing food, drinks, happiness, and sadness. As they grow up, they learn to understand their own hopes, ambitions, and dreams for their futures. They separated after Xia Zi went to continue her studies in Shanghai while Laili and Minawar stayed in Kashgar.

Years later, they reunited after Xia Zi’s father died. Returned to the hometown after years of struggling in the big city, Xia Zi finally found the place where she belongs. In the old guesthouse where she grew up, Xia Zi crossed path with Zhou Heng Zi, a determined young man who dreams of opening his own homestay in Kashgar.

Although they both looked carefree and optimistic, Xia Zi and Zhou Heng Zi carry their own burdens. As they lean on each other for support, the two begin an entrepreneurial journey that blossomed into love.

Meanwhile, Laili works tirelessly to support her family and herself while holding onto her dream of inheriting her father’s earthenware craft, despite the belief that such legacy should only be passed down to a son. Minawar faces a different struggle.

As the star of the Kashgar Song and Dance troupe, she loves her job but still dreams of performing on a much bigger stage. She also has to face the harsh reality of living as a star and a wife.

Although Xia Zi, Laili, and Minawar walks different paths, they share the same resilience and determination. Through heartbreaks and setbacks, they continue chasing their dreams while learning to grow, heal, and find their own place in life.

The Review

There are two main reasons why I watch this drama. The first one is because Bloom Life could be considered an artsy drama. And the second one is because this drama has only 8 episodes. EIGHT. Just looking at the number, I was instantly said “I’m in”.

Dear readers, let’s start this review with a brief geography lesson. China is the 3rd largest country in the world, stretching 5,000 km from east to west and 5,500 km from south to north. The population is over 1.4 billion, consisting of 56 ethnic group which speak over 300 languages and dialects.

And Kashgar, the main background of this drama, is located in the westernmost part of China, specifically in the southwestern region of Xinjiang Province. It was one of the oldest inhabited cities and the heart of the Uyghur culture. Geographically, Kashgar lies closer to Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

The blend of Chinese, Central Asian, and Middle Eastern influences has given Kashgar a unique character unlike anywhere else in the country. You could see the rich heritage from the architecture, local customs, music, and foods.

Xinjiang has also produced many well-known actors and actress. Just think of Dilraba Dilmurat (Love Beyond the Grave, Love on Turquoise Land, The Blue Whisper), Gulnezer Bextiyar (Glory, Fangs of Fortune, Snow Eagle Lord), Tong Liya (Hi Producers, Sowers of Love), Merxat Yalkun (Burning Flames, My Sassy Princess, The Moon Brightens For You, Winter Begonia), and Yu Meng Long (Feud, Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, The Legend of White Snake). They surely have undeniable charms, aren’t they?

And because I have always been interested in China’s diverse ethnicities and cultures, I’m naturally drawn to this kind of artsy, culture focused drama. These dramas often come with a subtle tourism promotion woven into the story, but I don’t mind at all because I love seeing and learning new things about China. And I do believe that you can learn a lot about cultures through dramas, not just from NatGeo documentaries. 😉

I love Chinese dramas with strong cultural background like To the Wonder (Xinjiang) or Meet Yourself (Yunnan). In To the Wonder, we follow Li Wen Xiu, a Han girl who lives in Altay (Aletai), a small town in Xianjiang Province. It’s a place where people from different ethnic groups, customs, and traditions have lived for generations.

If you decide to watch To the Wonder, be prepared for top-tier level of cinematography. This drama was made with more artistic approach, as it was originally produced for a festival, so it feels quite different from mainstream productions.

Then there is Meet Yourself, which feels like a sea of colour. In almost every scene, you could see beautiful colours woven into the scenery and the clothes worn by the people of Yunnan. Unlike To the Wonder, Meet Yourself feel like a warm bowl of noodle on the rainy day. So if you are looking for something light yet heartfelt, this one is a great choice. And as a bonus, you got the gorgeous Liu Yi Fei and Li Xian for full 40 episodes. 😎

So, you could see why I fall in love with Bloom Life almost instantly. This drama is not only a showcase of the warm environment of Kashgar. It also offers you a heartfelt story that will pull you in. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself glued to your seat until the very end. And after its logical yet satisfying ending, the warmth of the story will stay with you longer than you expected to be.

Bloom Life Drama Review - Kashgar
Bloom Life Drama Review – Kashgar

Before you start watching this drama, I must warn you that I cried my eyes out during my binge-watching session. I cried almost in every episode. Not because this drama was overwhelming sad or tragic, but because the story touched me deeply.

For example, I was already in tears during the first episode. Xia Zi lost her father when he was on a mission abroad. She returned to Kashgar to reunite with her mother and her father’s ashes.

During her stay, she recalls every memory of him, when he sewed her school uniform and reminded her not to fight at school or become an arrogant person. Also, when he waited for her under the same tree no matter the weather. Rain, snow, or sunshine, he was always there.

I could feel her pain, because it was so relatable to me. My father passed away years ago, and moving on from that loss was not easy. Xia Zi feels the same way. She said that people keep telling her to accept the fate and live a good life. But her father holds a special place in her heart. And when the person gone, that special place remains. But it becomes an empty space that can never be filled again…😭

Now let’s return to the drama…

Every character in Bloom Life carries their own burdens. Some struggle with the pain from the past, unresolved feelings, envy, or regret. Even someone with beauty privileges like Minawar has her own challenges to face.

But life is about how we deals with those obstacles. You can just laugh it out and pretend everything is fine like Xia Zi and Zhou Heng Zhi. You can smile through the pain and keep it buried like Minawar. Or you can charge ahead with an impulsive plan like Laili.

What I love the most about Bloom Life is how different this drama feels from most dramas I have watch recently. There is no angst, no toxic love triangle, no ruthless power struggle, and certainly no fantasy elements.

Bloom Life’s story is not written to stirs up strong emotions of its viewer every few minutes. No. Not at all. On the contrary, the story feels so grounded and familiar. To spice things up, the screenwriter just sprinkle a few misunderstanding, difficult in-laws, and family disputes. The rest come straight from everyday life.

No matter where you live, you can probably find women who got fired from their jobs, married the wrong person, lost a husband, forced to abandon their dream for the so-called customs, or sacrificed their passions and talents to start a family. That is why Bloom Life’s story feels so relatable.

And although I was a little confused about the connection between the Xia family and the people of Kashgar, I absolutely love the strong bonds between the families. They began as strangers but eventually became a family. The children treated one another like siblings rather than friends, mirroring the close relationship their parents had built over the years.

Among the parents, my favourite were definitely Xia Zi’s parents. Xia Hui and Chang Yue are both doctors with compassionate hearts. They are humble, courageous, resilient, and adaptable. You could see that they loved each other deeply and showed it with through unwavering support.

Bloom Life Drama Review - Xia Hui an Chang Yue
Bloom Life Drama Review – Xia Hui an Chang Yue

Chang Yue began her career in Kashgar by helping to establish the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) department in local hospital. Xia Hui supported her wholeheartedly, even leaving his career in big city to follow her to Kashgar. Later, when Xia Hui wanted to take a mission abroad, Chang Yue supported him just as wholeheartedly.

Sadly, Xia Hui lost his life while helping people in what appeared to be a conflict zone. Xia Hui and Chang Yue’s kindness and strength were inherited by Xia Zi. Despite facing many setbacks in her life, it didn’t make her down for too long. Time and time again, she managed to find a new purpose, a new dream, and a new reason to keep moving forward.

This drama shines so well because of the natural acting of the cast. Those who have watched Li Lan Di’s previous dramas already know how natural she is on screen and how effortlessly she delivers raw emotions. Just watch her in Angels Fall Sometimes and in Filter. These dramas belong to completely different genres, yet she nailed both roles perfectly.

I haven’t watch many of Guo Jun Chen’s dramas. I’ve only seen him in Beauty of Resilience with Ju Jing Yi, his cameo in Burning Flames, and also Sword and Beloved. But in this Bloom Life, he portrayed Zhou Heng Zhi so well that I was instantly fell in love with the character.

There is something charming about his naïve and gentle appearance. However, the most touching and compelling romance belongs to Laili and Parhatin, largely thanks to the strong chemistry between Qiu Tian and Xie Xin Hua. I was so moved by their story that I might rewatching this drama only for them.

Bloom Life ended with a very rational happy ending. The whole story was wrapped up neatly. The pacing felt just right, not rushing but also not dragging. Honestly, that is something that many 40 episodes dramas still struggle to achieve.

Bloom Life might be just a short drama. But watching this would make you ended up thinking about your life, your dream, and your future long after the final episode. Watching Xia Zi’s struggles reminds you that life can be unfair and sometimes painfully cruel.

But no matter how difficult things become, you still have to find the strength to face it. Meanwhile, Laili’s story shows us that your dream could hit the wall called family custom. And Minawar shows us that money isn’t always everything in life.

The Story – When the Hearts Finds Its Place

Grandma. Tell me, why is life so hard when you grow up?

Granddaughter. The sun of Kashgar lights up a thousand roads, and your shadow will tell you which one to take.

Story-wise, the main focus of this drama is the strong bond between Xia Zi, Minawar, and Laili. Each of them faces her own struggles and hardships. Although there is some friction between Xia Zi and Minawar, it no longer matters after they grow up. Their sisterhood remain as strong as it was when they were children.

I really admire how Laili managed to make her friends reconcile. In the first episode, she makes sure that Minawar, the hot-headed and sharp-tongued one, treats Xia Zi nicely and doesn’t pick a fight with Xia Zi. She repeatedly reminds Minawar that she should be gentle as a lamb and agree with whatever Xia Zi said to her. 😆

The three of them showed that there is no friendship without hardship, friction, or hidden feelings. Just like when Xia Zi and Minawar got falling out over a boy named Fang Nan in high school. Yet, they could talk about it casually when they meet again. Both showed that they were moved on from the incident.

Although deep down inside, Xia Zi and Minawar backed down because they care about each other’s feelings. So, it’s showed that through the years their bond grew stronger. Their sisterhood proved that true friendship is not measured by the absence of conflict, but by the willingness to forgive, understand, and remain by each other’s side. Genuine affection will always finds its way back.

From the very beginning, we could see the possibility of romance between Xia Zi and Zhou Heng Zhi. Their relationship developed at slow pace. Zhou Heng Zhi has attracted to Xia Zi from their first meeting at the train station.

Gradually, the affection grows and the sheer admiration turned into something deeper. But on Xia Zi’s side, things move much slower. She was already overwhelmed by her own problems. Romance is never on her list.

But I really like how Zhou Heng Zhi’s gentle personality complements Xia Zi’s boldness. He feels like the perfect match for her. They both are wanderers who searching for a place where they truly belong. That is why they could understand each other so well.

I love Zhou Heng Zhi’s character. He is a genuine green-flag man. He is open-minded, kind, smart, and supportive. Beneath the seemingly carefree façade, Zhou Heng Zhi had already experienced the harsh reality of being a corporate worker in a big city.

So, he understands Xia Zi better than anyone else. So even if Fang Nan may have been the one who loved her the most, Zhou Heng Zhi is still the man that Xia Zi needed the most. And when they found each other in the dating app, this adds a little magic to the story. 🥰

And don’t forget his mantra: “Don’t be angry, don’t be angry. Anger feed the devil.” Follow this mantra and add a little dancing of your own. I guarantee your anger will dissipate in an instant, replaced by embarrassment. 🕺🏻😂

Second couple is Laili and Parhatin. Their story feels more like a tale. They begin by pretending to be a couple, but their chemistry is so strong that you immediately knew that there is something more between them. Honestly, Laili and Parhatin would never be a couple if her father didn’t force Laili to marry the man he chose.

Well, I guess you cannot escape arrange marriage trope in Cdramaland. One always manage to appear in every drama. 😁

The storyline that felt the most familiar to me was Minawars marriage. She is a practical woman who knows exactly what she wants from life. She s talented woman, but she also understand that leaving Kashgar would never happen to her and her time as the star was limited.

So, Minawar chooses a partner who can provide the financial security and future she envisioned for herself. She did it by marrying Sadiq, the former school bully who happens to come from the wealthiest family in Kashgar. Well, it’s not uncommon for people to weigh financial stability alongside love when choosing a partner.

If there is one lesson taught by Bloom Life, it is resilience in the face of life’s obstacles. Who hasn’t experienced a difficult day at work? being crush inside a crowded subway, getting stepped on by strangers, being scolded for failing to complete a task, being scammed, or even losing a loved one.

Hardships come in different forms, and no one can escape them completely. What matters is how we rise after every fall and keep moving forward. Life is far too precious to be wasted on despair. Just do your best because, as Chang Yue said, “Life still has to go on.”

The Visuals – A Feast for a Homebody

Bloom Life is visually stunning. Within the first 5 minutes, I was already captivated by the narrow alleys with beautiful doors, decorated walls and colorful columns. The muted color palette immediately filled the screen with warmth.

Bloom Life Drama Review - The Visuals
Bloom Life Drama Review – The Visuals

My eyes constantly drawn into the intricate details. They even put a rusty old mirror to add the charm. Every corner was designed with thoughtful care. And for someone who enjoys observing small details, this drama is a feast for the eyes.

The cinematography is very artistic. It captures everyday life in a simple yet beautiful way. There is a scene in episode 4, where Xia Zi wakes up from her nap in a meadow. The camera moves slowly between her face and the mountain landscape surrounding her. Nothing dramatic happens in that moment. Yet I was captivated for some unknown reasons that I replay it many times.

The only problem for me are the wigs. The WIGS. I hope that one day urban dramas could learn a thing or two from the period dramas about how to put on a wig without making it too obvious. I hate staring at the weird bump on the top of the actor or actress’ head. Once you notice them, there’s no going back… 😭

The Characters

Xia Zi / Arzugul (Played by Li Lan Di)

In Kashgar, people who are close to Xia Zi call her by the name Arzugul. Behind her strong and stubborn appearance, Xia Zi is a person who has always held everything by herself. She never wanted to be a burden either to her mother or to those around her.
Xia Zi knows what she wants and strives to get it.

Once she believes that something is right, she will follow through with determination. Nothing can sway her, not even pressure or gossip. Growing up with parents who had seen more of the world gave Xia Zi a broader perspective than her peers. That’s why she chose to go to Shanghai and study architectural design.

And even though she always wanted to stay in Kashgar, she never closes the possibility that her dreams could be found in other places. Xia Zi is an emotionally guarded person. Only in front of Minawar and Laili, Xia Zi could express her feelings freely.

Zhou Heng Zhi (Played by Guo Jun Chen)

Zhou Heng Zhi is a cheerful and optimistic person. At first glance, he seems like an easy gong young man who goes whenever life takes him. However, he was actually a smart, reliable, and determined person. He loves adventure and knows how to appreciate culture and nature.

Zhou Heng Zhi has a big dream of opening his own homestay and steadily works toward the goal. His biggest weakness probably is his soft heart. He trusts people waaay too easily. Still, when it to matters of heart, he is surprisingly cautious. Rather than expressing his feelings recklessly, he keeps them to himself, careful not to became a burden to others, especially his love one.

Mi Na Wa Er / Minawar (Played by Mukerrem Qeyser)

Minawar is the diva of the town. Everybody knows her because she is beautiful and talented. Minawar is best dancer in the town. She got a strong presence on the stage and truly born to be a star. She is bold, expressive, fiery, proud, and sharp tongued.
Minawar wanted the everything life has to offer.

A big house, a nice car, a fat bank account, and the admiration of everyone around her, especially men. She wanted the whole world to admire her, especially men. But beneath her proudness lies a dream she cannot let go.

Minawar wants to perform on bigger stage and live a life larger than the one she has always known. And because she couldn’t achieve it, it slowly turns into a sense of frustration an inferiority, which is the real reason why she was always envying Xia Zi.

Lai Li / Laili (Played by Qiu Tian)

Unlike Minawar who put herself at the center of attention, Laili is always thinks about others before herself. She is a calm, hardworking, patient, and emotionally restrained. A peace-loving person by nature, Laili often put herself between the stubborn Xia Zi and the proud Minawar.

Acting as the mediator between them whenever tension arise. Laili had her own dream and ambition, she wanted to be a master of earthenware. But she suppressed it for the sake of her parents. Part of it comes from love and responsibility, but another part comes from guilt. Laili’s love for earthenware is more than a hobby or a passing interest. It is her true calling. Her talent, creativity, and dedication prove it.

Chang Yue (Played by Gong Bei Bi)

Chang Yue is Xia Zi’s mother. She is a seasoned TCM doctor and a compassionate person. When she was pregnant with Xia Zi, Chang Yue came to Kashgar and brought her husband along. She wanted to establsh a TCM department at a local hospital.

Chang Yue is a woman with determination. She is independent, broad-minded, and resilient woman. Compared to her husband, Xia Hui, Chang Yue is more straightforward and bolder.

She faces challenges head-on. When it comes to parenting, she always told Xia Zi that she raises her to be outstanding with the hopes that she could make choices without any burden. Chang Yue didn’t want Xia Zi to sacrifice herself for anyone, including her mother.

The Conclusion

Bloom Life made me reflect about my life, my dream, and the things I’m passionate about. It was funny how moments like this often come to me from a drama, a story created by someone else’s imagination.

Yet perhaps that is a good story should do. Not just for sole entertainment, but it should offer perspectives, sparks questions, and encourage us to look at our own liked from a different angle.

But of course, let’s not make every drama responsible for teaching us life lessons. Sometimes, I, too, wanted a pure entertainment. I want a drama that makes my imagination run wild, made me laugh, cry, or even scream at the screen. After all, watching fictional characters create chaos is much safer way to release my daily frustration than creating the chaos myself. 😉

Well, I think I’ve sounded more serious than usual in review. Still, I hope you understand my thoughts and I do hope it would resonate with some of you. Thank you for stopping by to this Bloom Life drama review post, dear readers. Until the next review, goodbye and happy watching!
