Episode Recap
Episode 29
Bu Yin Lou asked Bu Yu Lu whether he killed a young man in Ruyi Alley six years ago. She showed him the silk pendant but Bu Yu Lu refused to acknowledge the pendant. However, he was curious about where Bu Yin Lou got to know the truth. Bu Yu Lu stared at his daughter and told her that the young man was a lowly person who saw something that he should not see. The murder was inevitable and Bu Yu Lu believed that nobody should blame him for that.
Bu Yin Lou was shocked to learn the truth. Bu Yu Lu said that he did everything for the sake of the Bu family. But Bu Yin Lou refuted his words. Bu Yu Lu did it because he was afraid that he would be recognized as the Prince of Nanyuan’s ally. Bu Yu Lu was enraged when Bu Yin Lou said he was the Prince’s ally. Bu Yin Lou added that she thought it was strange when Bu Yu Lu never really went against Bu Yin Ge’s marriage with the Prince of Nanyuan. He just pretended in front of the Emperor so he would believe that Bu Yu Lu had nothing to do with The Prince of Nanyuan.
Bu Yin Lou wanted to know whether Bu Yu Lu had a tinge of guilt in him. But he never did. Bu Yu Lu did not care about others and only thought about himself. Bu Yin Lou mentioned that he forced her mother to be a concubine and then let her be tormented by his legitimate wife. Bu Yu Lu was furious yet he was afraid when all of his secrets were exposed. When Bu Yin Lou offered a soup, he did not dare to drink it. He was afraid that Bu Yin Lou would poison him.
To get the information, Bu Yu Lu changed his tactics and persuaded Bu Yin Lou. He said that he would protect Bu Yin Lou’s glory and status if she told him who wanted to know about Ruyi Alley matters. If the person was Xiao Duo, Bu Yu Lu wanted to know how much he knew about it. Bu Yin Lou reassured her father that Xiao Duo did not know anything. However, if Bu Yu Lu hurt him, Bu Yin Lou would sever their relationship as father and daughter.
When Bu Yin Lou entered her room, the somber Xiao Duo pulled her and asked where had she been. Bu Yin Lou was shocked, a flash of guilt shown on her face. She could not bear to meet his eyes but answered that she had been to the garden. Xiao Duo did not say anything and only embraced her.
The Emperor came to the Deer’s Rees Residence. He was already at the door when Bu Yin Lou and Xiao Duo were in bed. Fortunately, he called for Bu Yin Lou and shocked the lovers. Xiao Duo immediately rolled over to hide under the bed while Bu Yin Lou pretended to be sick to avoid him. The Emperor felt guilty because of his negligence, many things happened to her.
However, the Emperor was there because he had good news for Bu Yin Lou. He said that nobody at the court dared to oppose him and he had convinced the Empress Dowager that after her illness was cured, he would welcome her in the palace. Bu Yin Lou and Xiao Duo were shocked. The Emperor told her that he would give her everything and made her his empress. He wanted Bu Yin Lou to stay beside him, to love and respect each other, forever. After he said what he wanted to say, the Emperor left the room.
Xiao Duo jumped into the bed and pulled Bu Yin Lou. His eyes were red, and before he could say anything, Bu Yin Lou asked him to take her away. Xiao Duo promised that after everything was settled, he would take her away.
The next day, Cao Chun’ang and She Qilang reported their findings. Six years ago, on the exact day when Ah Duo was killed, Bu Yu Lu attended a poetry gathering. Because he was drunk, he stayed alone in a room to rest. Nobody had come to bother him nor seen him for a while. And the time Bu Yu Lu disappeared matched the time Ah Duo was killed. She Qilang also matched the dagger in Bu mansion with the picture of the scar that Xiao Duo drew from Ah Duo’s body.
Cao Chun’ang reminded his Godfather that if he killed Bu Yu Lu, Xiao Duo would be regarded as opposing the Emperor. She Qilang thought the same. If Xiao Duo killed Bu Yu Lu, it would be the same as killing himself. Because Xiao Duo did not seem to heed the warning, Cao Chun’ang told him that Bu Yu Lu was Bu Yin Lou’s biological father. If Xiao Duo killed Bu Yu Lu, what would she do by then? But whatever they said, Xiao Duo was determined to kill Ah Duo’s murderer.
Bu Yin Lou was restless. She did not hear any news from Xiao Duo for days. She wondered if something wrong had happened and decided to go to Xiao Duo’s residence next door. She told her maids that she would pray to Buddha and nobody shall disturb her.
She sneaked through the secret tunnel. Bu Yin Lou peeked through a window and saw Xiao Duo lit incense on a small nameplate. While the incense was burned, Xiao Duo ordered Cao Chun’an and She Qilang to set up an ambush to kill Bu Yu Lu. He would personally kill him. The meeting was disrupted when Eunuch Ba barked at Bu Yin Lou.
Bu Yin Lou immediately left the mansion and returned to her room. She talked to Ah Duo in her mind, apologizing to him because she would break her promise and if he wanted to scold her or lash out at her, he could come to her dream and she promised that she would not fight back. When Xiao Duo came to her room, she ran to him and hugged him. She asked where he was and invited him to accompany her that night. Xiao Duo seemed not suspicious of her because he easily agreed.
Bu Yin Lou would do anything to stall him that night. She had prepared many strong liquors for him. When Xiao Duo arrived, Bu Yin Lou told him that she could not sleep, thus she wanted to drink and chat with him. Bu Yin Lou drank the wine and Xiao Duo followed suit. Her face blushed but Xiao Duo did not feel anything. When Bu Yin Lou was intoxicated, she whispered that Xiao Duo should not go anywhere.
Xiao Duo put Bu Yin Lou in her bed. When he was about to go, Bu Yin Lou grabbed his robe. It turned out that none of them was drunk. Xiao Duo knew that Bu Yin Lou got him drunk and seduced him to save her father. Bu Yin Lou did not deny it. She said that she did not want to save him but she could not help it because she was afraid her mother would be sad.
Bu Yin Lou explained that she was afraid that Bu Yu Lu’s death would implicate many people, including Xiao Duo. And she did not want him to die. Xiao Duo left her room and locked the secret door. Bu Yin Lou could not go anywhere because the maids were guarding her room.
When the time came, Xiao Duo, Cao Chun’ang, and She Qilang were ready with their crossbows. They stood in a building with their crossbows aimed at Bu Yu Lu’s carriage. The other Zhaoding guards also aimed their crossbows at the carriage. When Xiao Duo released his arrow, Cao Chun’ang and the others also released their arrows.
Bu Yin Lou could not stay still. She paced around her room and tried to open the secret door, but failed. Suddenly the door was opened and Cao Chun’ang appeared. Bu Yin Lou was impatient to wait for his answer and barged into the tunnel. When she appeared at the mansion, she happened to see Xiao Duo passing by. He walked into the room with his blades, followed by several Zhaoding guards. Bu Yin Lou’s heart lurched. She was late.
But Cao Chun’ang heard her words and replied that she was not late. The chicken was just freshly killed. Bu Yin Lou was stunned. Chicken?
She barged into the room and saw Xiao Duo holding a chicken in his hand. Bu Yin Lou’s eyes widened when she saw a big box like coffin in the room. Carefully she approached it and saw several dead chickens inside it. It turned out, Xiao Duo did not release any arrows at Bu Yu Lu, instead, he aimed them at the chickens.
Xiao Duo cooked several dishes of spicy chicken for her. After he finished, Bu Yin Lou asked why he did not kill Bu Yu Lu when he had the chance. Xiao Duo explained that he heard everything she said to Bu Yu Lu that night, including her threat to her father. Xiao Duo said he almost killed Bu Yu Lu when he recalled Bu Yin Lou’s expression when Bu Yu Lu left. Xiao Duo was afraid Bu Yin Lou would be sad and leave him. Bu Yin Lou called him silly because she could not bear to leave him.
Bu Yu Lu went to Shangqiong Palace to report his findings about Xiao Duo. He said that Xiao Duo had many men in court, and they did not know how many more people he had. Every guard in Zhaoding Bureau was loyal to Xiao Duo and not to the Emperor. Although they dismissed him from his position, Xiao Duo’s power did not waver and he still controlled the court. The Emperor was furious and summoned Xiao Duo to the palace.
Bu Yin Lou asked Xiao Duo whether he would regret that he did not avenge Ah Duo. He said that he had made up his mind. Besides, The Emperor would call Bu Yin Lou to enter the palace, he did not dare to take risks. They should immediately leave Great Ye. In the middle of their conversation, Cao Chun’ang ran to report the summon.
When Xiao Duo arrived at the palace, The Emperor ordered Xiao Duo to go to the Imperial Mausoleum to supervise the reconstruction. He should go there as soon as possible and the Zhaoding guards did not have to follow him. The Emperor ordered Sun Tai Qing to prepare the carriage and escort Xiao Duo to depart immediately. Xiao Duo could not say anything but obeyed the order.
Bu Yin Lou felt something was amiss when Tong Yun came to deliver a message. She said Xiao Duo was sent to the Imperial Mausoleum to supervise the reconstruction. Tong Yun conveyed the message that Xiao Duo had left some men in Deer’s Reed Residence and told her to wait for him.
Xiao Duo thought that somebody had deliberately sent him out of the Imperial City because of an ulterior motive.
Meanwhile, the Emperor asked Bu Yu Lu’s opinion about the Prince of Nanyuan’s request. He had asked the Emperor to let him attend the Mid-Autumn Festival banquet to ask for forgiveness. Bu Yu Lu said that the prince was arrogant in nature, if he was willing to bow down to the Emperor, it means that the Emperor’s power was getting stronger. He suggested the Emperor grant the Prince of Nanyuan’s request.
Sun Tai Qing tried to remind the Emperor that the ambitious nature of the Prince of Nanyuan might cause trouble for him. Bu Yu Lu cut his word and said that the prince has lost his power and military powers. He was nothing but a useless person who indulged his life in poetry and painting. The Emperor should not be afraid of him.
Sun Tai Qing still felt uneasy. He reminded his master again that the Prince was a shrewd person who might have ulterior motives. The Emperor should not believe him easily. Bu Yu Lu refused to back down and the Emperor blocked Sun Tai Qing’s words. He said that he had decided to grant the request.
This emperor was sooo stupid… I want to smack his head!
Yuwen Liang Xu went to a fabric store to find new clothes. The store owner took him to the VIP room to find the new clothes. In the VIP room, Yuwen Liang Xu met an unexpected guest.
Yuwen Liang Shi went to the capital to find his brother. The Prince of Nanyuan apologized to his brother, Yuwen Liang Xu, he had left him to suffer in Mount Zhong. Yuwen Liang Xu said that he stayed in the capital willingly because he knew that his brother’s safety was more important than his. The Prince of Nanyuan sighed.
Although he was a cruel man, the Prince of Nanyuan loved his brother so much. He said that he would take Yuwen Liang Xu away from the capital. He already found a substitute for him so the Emperor would not find out that Yuwen Liang Xu had left the capital. The Prince said that it would only take several days.
By that time, the Murong family would have nothing to say because it was the time when the Murong family must return the power that belonged to them. Yuwen Liang Xu furrowed his brow. Suddenly he thought about something and jumped from his seat. With an incredulous expression, he asked whether his brother would perform a coup.
The Prince of Nanyuan said that Great Ye would never exist if not because of their ancestor. Yet, the Murongs burnt the bridges and drove them out to Western Shu. The Prince said that the capital would be in turmoil and he did not want Yuwen Liang Xu to suffer. Therefore he planned to send Yuwen Liang Xu outside the capital. But he was refused. Yuwen Liang Xu persuaded his brother to cease his plans.
The Prince of Nanyuan refuted that they had been suppressed by the Murongs for years. He wanted to create a situation where the Yuwens could live peacefully. Yuwen Liang Xu felt unease. He did not agree with his brother’s plan. Yuwen Liang Xu told his brother that he wanted to help. They should go through thick and thin together. This time, the Prince of Nanyuan could not refute his brother’s words.
Outside the clothing store, Princess Hede, Murong Wan Wan, stood at the entrance. She entered the shop, but two guards stopped her. Princess Hede immediately fought them. The commotion was heard by Yuwen Liang Xu and his brother. Hastily Yuwen Liang Xu drove his brother out of the room before Princess Hede found him.
Episode 30
Yuwen Liang Shi, the Prince of Nanyuan entered the palace hall to greet the Emperor. He brought many gifts for the Emperor. Bu Yu Lu asked the Prince to show his talent in sword calligraphy. The Prince’s sword technique was good. When gravel flew in the direction of the Emperor, he managed to block it. But his sword made the Emperor scared.
The Prince of Nanyuan apologized and wiped the dirt from the Emperor’s shoe. When the Emperor checked on the calligraphy, he liked it so much that he decided to reward the Prince. Because of his sin, the Prince of Nanyuan did not dare to ask for rewards. He only wanted to join the Emperor on a hunting trip. The Emperor liked the Prince’s flattery and allowed him to join the trip.
Sun Tai Qing carefully asked the Emperor about the security of the hunting ground. Usually, the Zhaoding Bureau was the one who handled the matter. But since Xiao Duo was not there, Sun Tai Qing had to ask. The Emperor was irked when he heard the Zhaoding Bureau’s name. He scolded Sun Tai Qing and gave the task of security to Bu Yu Lu. Late that night, the Prince of Nanyuan asked his trusted aide about a task that involved Deer’s Reed residence. The Prince smirked and added that the gift he prepared should be enjoyed properly by the Emperor.
The next day, Bu Yin Lou was surprised to see Bu Yin Ge standing in the courtyard, waiting for her. When they met, Bu Yin Lou did not say a word, but Bu Yin Ge had grabbed her hand and talked about her miserable life in West Shu. Bu Yin Lou did not like to be near Bu Yin Ge. She told Bu Yin Ge to return to the Bu residence, but Bu Yin Ge said she was chased out by their father. Bu Yin Ge wanted to stay with her in Deer’s Reed residence. Without waiting for her approval, Bu Yin Ge found a place for her in Deer’s Reed Residence.
At noon, Bu Yin Lou found out that some of her clothes were missing. The maid said Bu Yin Ge left in hurry and did not bring enough clothes, so she borrowed Bu Yin Lou’s. Bu Yin Ge’s action made Bu Yin Lou wonder what was she up to.
The Emperor ordered a troop of elite soldiers to keep an eye on Xiao Duo in the Imperial Mausoleum. If he dared to step out of the Mausoleum, he would be executed for disobeying the order. The Emperor wanted to bring Bu Yin Lou with him and went to the Deer’s Reed residence to invite her. She found Bu Yin Lou was playing ring toss.
The Emperor’s face was unsightly because Bu Yin Lou always used her sickness as a reason to refuse him. And Sun Tai Qing, as usual with his annoying remark, said nonchalantly that Bu Yin Lou seemed to recover very well. The Emperor left in a huff. Bu Yin Lou asked her maids who has came up with the idea, and the maid answered that the game was Bu Yin Ge’s idea. Bu Yin Lou immediately realized that she was tricked.
The Emperor left in anger and bumped into Bu Yin Ge who was wearing Bu Yin Lou’s clothes and accessories. She introduced herself as Bu Yin Lou’s sister. When she heard Sun Tai Qing called His Majesty, Bu Yin Ge immediately kneeled and apologized. Sun Tai Qing recognized Bu Yin Ge as the Prince of Nanyuan’s concubine.
A moment later, the Emperor sat in a pavilion, and Bu Yin Ge served him food and wine. The Emperor was getting drunk and mistakenly treated her as Bu Yin Lou. He even ordered Bu Yin Ge to act as Bu Yin Lou. Sun Tai Qing saw his drunken master and furrowed his brow. Meanwhile, Bu Yin Lou saw Bu Yin Ge pretending to be her and even called herself Yin Lou.
Sun Tai Qing was too immersed in watching his master and did not notice Bu Yin Lou has entered the pavilion. The Emperor saw her and let go of Bu Yin Ge in haste, but he was stunned when he saw Bu Yin Lou kneeled and said that she would not tell anyone about what she saw. Her words made the Emperor angry.
The Emperor said that Bu Yin Lou was a virtuous person who had no fear or hatred. Bu Yin Lou replied that she was part of the harem and that it was important to cease hatred and fear. The Emperor stated that she was not the only person he wanted to marry. Bu Yin Lou only raised her head and stared at the Emperor before she lowered it.
Bu Yin Ge was feeling schadenfraude when she saw her sister kneeled. When the Emperor beckoned her, she immediately went to him. Then the Emperor left with Bu Yin Ge in his arm. Sun Tai Qing went up to Bu Yin Lou and apologetically said that his master was drunk.
The next day, the Emperor woke up with Bu Yin Ge on his bed. He seemed lost in thought. Bu Yin Lou put on her earrings while she analyzed the situation. Xiao Duo was transferred outside the capital while the Prince of Nanyuan came. And now Bu Yin Ge had gained the attention of the Emperor. She concluded that all of the events were not coincidental. The Emperor dragged the disheveled Bu Yin Ge to Bu Yin Lou’s room. He ordered Bu Yin Lou to ride together with Bu Yin Ge to the hunting ground. Bu Yin Ge was elated while Bu Yin Lou looked distraught.
The Emperor asked Sun Tai Qing if a woman was heartless, it meant she had someone in her heart. The Emperor talked about Bu Yin Lou. It seemed that the Emperor wanted to make Bu Yin Lou jealous, but he failed. Sun Tai Qing reminded him that the man was dead. But the Emperor said that besides her cousin, there was another person who always stayed beside her. And the person was Xiao Duo. Sun Tai Qing said that he thought too much because Xiao Duo was only a eunuch.
At the hunting ground, the Emperor shot a deer. Everybody watched him closely. The Prince of Nanyuan stood side by side with Bu Yin Ge, while Bu Yin Lou stood a bit further in the back. The Emperor was displeased with one of the officials and shot him in the leg. His mood plummeted when he saw the indifferent Bu Yin Lou. He called Bu Yin Ge and asked her if she could do archery. He beckoned Bu Yin Ge and taught her how to release an arrow. They aimed the arrow at Bu Yin Lou. He did not release it, because the Emperor only wanted to threaten her.
The Emperor and Bu Yin Ge’s posture was close and intimate, but he did not care about it. And the Emperor was too proud of himself that he missed the ridiculed look on the Prince of Nanyuan’s face. Princess Hede came to the field and saw her brother being intimate with the Prince of Nanyuan’s concubine.
She was furious because it was shameless and inappropriate. Bu Yin Lou calmed her down. She explained that the Emperor did that because he wanted to show everybody that nothing he, Murong Gao Gong, could not get. Princess Hede pondered her words and then took Bu Yin Lou outside.
Inside the forest, Princess Hede met with Yuwen Liang Xu. They left together while Bu Yin Lou saw Bu Yin Ge walked into the forest and talked to the Prince of Nanyuan. She went closer to eavesdrop on them. It turned out that the Prince ordered Bu Yin Ge to take something from the Emperor’s room, but Bu Yin Lou did not know what it is.
Bu Yin Ge saw her sister and threatened to kill her with a knife. She ridiculed Bu Yin Lou and tried to stab her. They fought when the Imperial guards came, followed by the Emperor. All of them saw the knife was in Bu Yin Lou’s hand. When they returned to the palace, the Emperor called Bu Yin Lou and Bu Yin Ge. Bu Yin Lou acted cold and indifferent while Bu Yin Ge pretended to be pitiful and accused Bu Yin Lou to be jealous of her.
After Bu Yin Ge left, the Emperor asked whether Bu Yin Lou hit Bu Yin Ge or not. If she hit her, the Emperor would pretend nothing had happened. He told Bu Yin Lou that he would wait for her in his bed chamber that night. If Bu Yin Lou came, he promised that he would always be at her side. He also said that it would be the last time he would wait for her.
After the Emperor left, Bu Yin Lou pondered whether she should reveal the meeting between Bu Yin Ge with the Prince or not. However, Bu Yin Lou did not have enough proof in her hand. Bu Yin Lou searched for Princess Hede everywhere, but she could not find her so she decided to act on her own.
Meanwhile, Princess Hede and Yuwen Liang Xu were having a conversation in the forest. They enjoyed their time together. Yuwen Liang Xu wanted to bring Princess Hede back to the capital but she refused.
Bu Yin Lou followed Bu Yin Ge when she met the Prince. The Prince told Bu Yin Ge that he used her only because she looked like Bu Yin Lou. Bu Yin Ge tried to push her luck by asking for rewards. The Prince of Nanyuan said that if he succeeded, Bu Yin Ge would be granted the title of Noble Consort. Bu Yin Ge was satisfied with his answer. Then she handed the Emperor’s commander seal that she took from his bed chamber. Bu Yin Lou who was hiding under the wall was shocked. With the seal in his hand, the Prince of Nanyuan would have the authority to command the Great Ye’s army.
The Emperor waited for Bu Yin Lou but she did not come. He was disappointed and believed that Bu Yin Lou would not come. Later that night, Bu Yin Lou barged into the Emperor’s bed chamber. Sun Tai Qing tried to block her but he failed. Bu Yin Lou raised her voice and called for the Emperor, but it was Bu Yin Ge who answered from inside the room.
When Princess Hede returned, Bu Yin Lou immediately told her that the Prince of Nanyuan planned to rebel. She also told her about the commander seal. Princess Hede was shocked. Bu Yin Lou reminded her that the commander’s seal might not be used to attack the Emperor, but it could be used to send the army away from the capital. Princess Hede said that she would contact Bu Yu Lu to help, but her words shocked Bu Yin Lou.
She did not know that Bu Yu Lu was in charge of the hunting ground guards. Bu Yin Lou said that Bu Yu Lu was in cahoots with the Prince. The three of them ran to the entrance and saw they were too late. Bu Yin Lou, Princess Hede, and Ruolan split up and promised they would meet at the hall. Bu Yu Lu ordered the guard to attack the Emperor. He also sent some people to deal with Xiao Duo at the Mausoleum.
Princess Hede was fighting with the guard when Yuwen Liang Xu tried to pull her out of the palace. Princess Hede refused. She was disappointed when she learned that Yuwen Liang Xu already knew of his brother’s plan. Princess Hede said that since the first time they meet, she knew sooner or later they would be on the opposite side. Princess Hede said that her official name was Murong Jun, and her name comes with a sense of responsibility and honor. She would not throw away her country and run away. Princess Hede told the guards to throw Yuwen Liang Xu out.
At that moment, the Prince of Nanyuan, Bu Yu Lu, and their army came to surround the palace. Sun Tai Qing panicked and called the Emperor to relay the bad news. He reported that the palace had been surrounded by the rebels. The Emperor was shocked and the first thing that came to his mind was to take Bu Yin Lou away. Bu Yin Lou appeared and told him that they could not go anywhere because the exit was blocked. The emperor was furious and called Bu Yu Lu. Bu Yin Lou said that he might not come. While Bu Yin Ge quietly scooted over to the door.
Outside the palace, the Prince shouted that Murong Gao Gong was a foolish emperor. He rebelled to restore their Great Ye.
At the mausoleum, Xiao Duo was waiting for an attack.
My Musing
Murong Gao Gong was indeed a foolish emperor…!
