Episode Recap
Episode 41
The Emperor issued a royal decree for the Crown Princess. It was written on the decree that she had a malicious heart and dishonest behavior. Because the Crown Princess could not serve as an example to people she was demoted to a commoner and banished to North Palace.
Shao Shang came to show her gratitude to the Crown Princess. When Shao Shang entered the Palace for the first time, The Crown Princess was the one that treated her kindly. The Crown Princess said to her that she didn’t regret everything she did because it was her way to keep a husband who didn’t love her for years. Shao Shang told her that it was not the Crown Prince who could not forget Qu Lingjun, but the Crown Princess who kept reminding him about her. Being alone and disgraced was the end of the Crown Princess from the Sun clan.
Meanwhile, after she had her name cleared, Qu Lingjun married her brother-in-law, Liang Wuji. Ling Bu Yi said that Liang Wuji was an upright man. He would be a good husband and look after his kin very well.
Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi were having a date! They walk in the street and buy some preserved fruits.
In the Palace, a soldier ran to report that something had happened in Shouchun. General Peng Kun was rebelling!
The Emperor was having a casual meal with Minister Cui You, General Wan, and Ling Bu Yi. They eat a civilian menu such as pancakes (an ancient kind of pancakes, not the one with the maple syrup…😉) because the Emperor wanted to reminisce about the hard times. They eat and discuss the situation in Shouchun. Ling Bu Yi came up with a strategy to take down Shouchun. It was applicable, but they had another issue on hand.
The noble families in the capital wanted to send their kins to join the war, but they lacked experience and were hard to handle. General Wan said those young men wanted to gain merit by fighting in the battle. The Emperor said that it was understandable if noble families wanted to send their kins, and he would totally support them.
Ling Bu Yi offered to lead the army to Shouchun, but the Emperor did not want him to go. He got angry and threw food at him. Minister Cui and General Wan tried to calm him down, but they failed.
The Emperor was angry because Ling Bu Yi had already been to 100 battles within a year, yet he didn’t think about his marriage. The Emperor dragged his foster son and ordered him to stand in the corner of the room and scolded him.
The Emperor said that every time he mentioned marriage, Ling Bu Yi always wanted to go to war. He always delayed his marriage. The Emperor was worried that Ling Bu Yi would not get the chance to get married if he always ran rampant in a battle.
This scene was ridiculously funny. The Emperor dragged Ling Bu Yi by the back collar, which reminded me of a cat mom dragging her naughty baby, and after that, you could see Ling Bu Yi sulking while biting a pancake. Are they royals? 😅
Ling Bu Yi wanted to go to Shouchun because Peng Kun was the key person linked to the Gu City case. He suspected Peng Kun, who murdered Lord Qian’an, had colluded with Emperor Li. For that reason, Ling Bu Yi wanted to capture him alive and interrogate Peng Kun himself.
The Empress knew that Shao Shang was worried about Ling Bu Yi. She told her a way to help Ling Bu Yi persuade the Emperor. Therefore, Shao Shang went to Xuanming Hall with two bowls of sweet wine. She also conveyed a message from the Empress, a poem that said a general should be on a battlefield. Shao Shang also attempted to coax the Emperor, so he could let Ling Bu Yi go to Shouchun.
The Emperor finally gave in and let Ling Bu Yi lead the army to war. But he had to return immediately to the capital after he captured Peng Kung and got married. After they got the issue resolved, the Emperor kicked the lovers out because he could not stand their lovey-dovey acts.
Shao Shang scrutinized Ling Bu Yi. She wanted to take a good look at him and remember his face. Shao Shang said that if his father returned from a war expedition, he always looked tanned. She told Ling Bu Yi to protect his complexion because she didn’t want to get married to an ink stick.
Shao Shang also told him that she understood how Ling Bu Yi felt about his uncle’s death, and the Gu city case had always been a pain in his heart. She said if she didn’t have to take care of the sick Empress she would follow him to the battle. Therefore, Shao Shang said she wanted to see Ling Bu Yi capture Peng Kun and share the joy of revenge with her. She will wait for him to marry her in the capital.
Ling Bu Yi was moved to hear her words. He promised to hold a grand wedding for her after he took care of Peng Kun.
Shao Shang made armor for Ling Bu Yi. She personally designed and crafted it. But the hardest part was not the armor but the embroidery. She pricked her fingers many times. Well, back then women often embroidered something for their loved ones. Shao Shang was not an exception.
Father Cheng and his wife spied on Shao Shang from the windows. He looked aggrieved every time the needle pricked Shao Shang’s finger. He muttered that Shao Shang must make something for him because he was going to Tongniu County for an expedition. But Mother Cheng disagreed, judging from the size, the armor should be made for Ling Bu Yi. Father Cheng didn’t believe her.
Ling Bu Yi and his subordinates were having a meeting at Panqing Military Camp when the Liang duo reported that someone had tried to sneak into the camp. Ling Bu Yi told them to kill the man on the spot. But Liang duo got panicked and forbid Ling Bu Yi from doing that because the one who sneaked in was Shao Shang. She brought something for Ling Bu Yi.
Shao Shang sneakily walked into the camp. She was confused that nobody guarded the camp. Unbeknownst to her, those guards were hiding behind the tent. A few soldiers walked and talked about Ling Bu Yi’s camp direction. They indirectly gave her directions to his tent! 😂
Shao Shang finally arrived in his tent. Ling Bu Yi teased her by capturing her from the back. He asked her why she was there dressing up like a man and sneaking into a military camp. Shao Shang said that she has her own reason.
Ling Bu Yi also wanted to give her something. He took her to a watchtower and showed her a piece of land near the camp. He said the Emperor asked him what kind of reward he wanted after he returned victoriously. Ling Bu Yi asked for a piece of land near the camp. He planned to have their future home there, where they could live, have children, and grow old together.
Shao Shang was quiet and her eyes teary, Ling Bu Yi panicked, he thought he had made a wrong decision, so he apologized. However, instead of being sad or disappointed, Shao Shang was moved by his intention. She kissed him to stop the plea. They looked at each other lovingly.
She promised him that they would never be an unhappy couple like his parent. Ling Bu Yi disagreed because he said that they actually were not unhappy couples. But he took back his words. Shao Shang told him that she also had a gift for him.
The next day at the ceremony, Ling Bu Yi wore a new winged armor. He checked on Shao Shang’s hand to see how many wounds were in her hand. Ling Bu Yi forbade her from making another armor for him again lest her hand would be severely wounded. Shao Shang asked him whether he liked the mandarin duck wings or not. Ling Bu Yi was surprised, he thought that it was chicken wings …🤣
Liang Qiu Qi whispered that their young master had a mandarin duck wing attached to his armor while Liang Qiu Fei cried. Liang Qiu Fei thought the wings were embarrassing enough that the enemy would laugh at them, and because of it he didn’t want to go to war. And it was a rare occurrence when Liang Qiu Qi agreed with him…🤣
Ling Bu Yi was at a loss when Shao Shang said that she had embroidered a rabbit on the soft armor. He thought it was a rat. Ling Bu Yi said that Shao Shang should leave the needlework for him because he was better at it than her. Poor Shao Shang, she should just give up needlework…😆
Father Cheng, who was also going on another expedition, looked at them and grumbled because Shao Shang did not make anything for him. But Mother Cheng reminded him if Shao Shang really made him something, he would not be as thick-skinned as Ling Bu Yi to wear them in public. After he thought about it, Father Cheng agreed with her. Personally, he would not dare to use the chicken wings armor… Ahahahahah… This chicken wings thing was cracking me up!
Before he goes, Ling Bu Yi throws something at Shao Shang. It was Ling Bu Yi’s private seal. The Empress said that Ling Bu Yi had trusted his family to Shao Shang. The Empress was touched by Ling Bu Yi’s action. She stared at the Emperor who was laughing happily with Noble Consort Yue. Her face looked sad. The Empress regretted that she had never experienced this kind of thing by herself.
The Emperor released the army. They were going to war!
Episode 42
It had been a few days since Ling Bu Yi went to war, and General Cheng Shi went on an expedition.
The womenfolk at the Cheng residence were busy preparing for the wedding of Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi. Mother Cheng and Old Madam Cheng were in a middle of a debate about what kind of hairpins Cheng Shao Shang should use for her joyous occasion. They had totally opposite jewelry choices. Mother Cheng loved the silver hairpins with a simple design, while the Old Madam preferred the more intricate design of gold jewelry. They both put their choices of hairpins on Shao Shang’s hair. Her head looked like an expensive hedgehog.
While her elders argue, Shao Shang stops them by saying that the Empress had already prepared headdresses made by the imperial craftsmen for her marriage. Old Madam Cheng was ecstatic because they could save some money for the jewelry.
But in contrast, Mother Cheng looked dejected because she felt at a loss. After all, the Empress was more thoughtful than her. Shao Shang refutes Mother Cheng. The Emperor and Empress have always hoped for Ling Bu Yi to get married. For that reason, they always prepare wedding necessities for Ling Bu Yi’s wedding every year.
Moreover, Shao Shang said that her marriage would be held in the Palace because the Empress had already prepared a boudoir for her. Old Madam Cheng was elated, but Mother Cheng seemed sad. To cover the sadness, Mother Cheng said any reward given to them by the monarchs would bring honor to the Cheng family. Therefore, Shao Shang should be married in the Palace. She took the hairpin and left. Shao Shang did not seem happy either.
Shao Shang was standing on the Palace balcony when Yuan Shen came and criticized her for looking gloomy like some married woman waiting for her husband. Shao Shang taunted him about marriage and it provoked Yuan Shen. He said that he definitely would get married faster than her. Yuan Shen left in a hurry. Shao Shang shouted that he did not have to force himself to get married.
In the Yuan residence. Yuan Shen scolded his attendant when he saw a picture of a beautiful maiden from the Cai family and voiced his disapproval of the young lady. Yuan Shen disagrees with the matchmaker’s opinion that Lady Cai was the best candidate for him. Even though young Lady Cai was a peerless talent because she could recite poems at three and wrote rhapsodies at seven…😱
Yuan Shen demanded that his future wife’s brain should not be slower than Shao Shang’s. Her personality should not persevere more than Shao Shang. Her looks must not be uglier than Shao Shang’s. Yuan Shen did not want Shao Shang to look down on him because of his chosen wife. After he heard the reason, Yuan Shen’s assistant thought that his master must be out of his mind.
The next day, Yuan Shen met Shao Shang and bragged about his fiancee, Lady Cai, and her peerless talent…🤣
But Shao Shang didn’t believe a single word he said. Yuan Shen was not a reckless person, he always think thrice and calculate everything. Therefore, it was impossible for him to fall in love with Lady Cai.
In the Cheng residence, the young heir of Marquis Ban, Ban Jia, was probing about Cheng Yang’s marriage. But Cheng Yang said that she didn’t want to stay single for good. Cheng Song and Cheng Shao Gong teased the dejected Ban Jia. While they laugh, Shao Gong’s fortune-telling instrument falls and breaks. He was shocked and said that was a bad omen.
It is a bad omen. The Emperor had just received a report about Marquis Qu Ling, Cheng Shi, and Tongniu County Magistrate, Yan Zhong, have betrayed the country. They run away with 2,000 jins of copper from Tongniu County. The court officials lambasted Marquis Qu Ling and demanded his entire family be executed.
The Empress, who was worried about Shao Shang, came and asked for an audience with the Emperor. But Eunuch Cao said that The Emperor was very angry because of the issues and refused to meet anybody. The Empress insisted on waiting outside the hall. She coughed and coughed. Clearly her health was not good at all. Noble Consort Yue who just came decided to enter the hall, not caring about Eunuch Cao’s warning at all.
And she got hit as soon as she opened the door. 😅
Noble Consort Yue pretended to be hurt. The Emperor panicked and called the imperial physician. But she refused and told the Emperor to keep on throwing things. The Emperor stopped being angry after Noble Consort Yue coaxed him.
Noble Consort Yue asked him about the Tongniu case. She understood that the Emperor was disappointed not only because of his subject but also because he was worried about Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi. Noble Consort Yue told the Emperor that a ruler must not be indecisive and should abide by the law. She trusted the Emperor, Marquis Qu Ling (Cheng Shi), and County Magistrate Yan Zhou. She advised him to follow the book because he must convince his subordinates that he would be a just ruler.
Noble Consort Yue convey the Emperor’s decision to the Empress. Because he should abide by the law, he must detain all the members of the Cheng family including Cheng Cheng, Cheng Zhi and his wife, and Cheng Yong, Shao Shang’s first brother and his wife. They all would be detained for further investigation. Shao Shang would be spared from the case because she was counted as a member of the Ling family as he was Ling Bu Yi’s fiancee.
The Empress was relieved, but it wasn’t long when a maidservant reported that Shao Shang had left the palace to return to her family. If anything happened to them, she would die with her family. Shao Shang met Yuan Shen at the palace gate.
He promised to help her and her family. Shao Shang asked Yuan Shen whether he believed in her father or not. Yuan Shen firmly answered that he believed in him. Shao Shang returned to her home in his carriage.
In the Cheng residence, Mother Cheng and all the members of the Cheng family were arguing with General Zuo, who wanted to arrest the entire Cheng family. He even threatened to kill them on the spot if they refused the order. Everybody step forward to defend the family, even the weak Cheng Yang.
When the Cheng family was in a dire situation, Shao Shang came and scolded General Zuo. She accuses him of using the chance to avenge his niece, Lady Zuo (she was the one who pushed Shao Shang on the bridge), and his brother, Magister Zuo, whom Ling Bu Yi broke his legs. Suddenly, Yuan Shen came with a royal decree. It stated that the Cheng family’s investigation was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice. Therefore, General Zuo cannot do anything to the Cheng family.
Everybody walked into the carriage, including Old Madam Cheng, who was reluctant to go. Shao Shang walked behind her mother, but Yuan Shen held her back. The Emperor had spared her from the investigation, and she didn’t have to go with her family. But Shao Shang refused and insisted on going with them. Mother Cheng, who overheard the conversation, turned back and slapped Shao Shang. She told her that Father Cheng’s life or death was unknown. If anything happened to the Cheng family, Shao Shang would be the last descendant of the Chengs. She must live on and live a good life, or the ancestor of the Cheng family, including her parents, will not forgive her. Shao Shang cried.
That evening, Shao Shang kneeled in front of the Yongle Palace under the heavy rain.
However, the Emperor refused to meet her. Eunuch Cao shields her with an umbrella. Not long after, the Crown Prince joined her to kneel and begged the Emperor. He refused to go and wanted to help her because Shao Shang helped him before. The Empress also comes to help Shao Shang despite her ailing body.
The Emperor was anxious, he was worried about the Empress’s health, but he insisted to refuse Shao Shang. Noble Consort Yue saw his worried face and forcefully pushed him to go out and see them. Outside the palace, the Emperor reprimanded Cheng Shao Shang, The Empress, and the Crown Prince.
The Empress begged him to review Marquis Qu Ling’s case, but the Emperor could not do that because he already issued a decree, and there would be a trial for the case. Noble Consort Yue acted as an arbitrator. She persuades the Emperor to grant Shao Shang an audience and also invites the Empress to Yongle Palace because she was sick. The Emperor gave in and told Eunuch Cao to prepare ginger soups.
At the Ministry of Justice’s prison, Yuan Shen came to check on the Cheng family members and brought them dinner. Everybody ate the meal except Old Madam Cheng, who wanted to go on a hunger strike.
Cheng Shao Shang was in the study with the Emperor. The Emperor told her that he could not eat and drink because of the case. Yet, Shao Shang could drink a bowl of ginger soup. Shao Shang said that she needed the strength to do something. Naturally, she would drink the soup.
The Emperor reprimanded her because she tortured herself. Shao Shang told the Emperor that his father did not have motives to betray the Emperor and the country. He lacked nothing and lived a good and happy life with his family. Shao Shang believed that someone maligned her father.
The Emperor said that there was solid evidence that shows Cheng Shi and Yan Zhong left with 2,000 jin of refined copper. The Emperor said that if he could not find the missing copper, he might not be able to save Shao Shang’s family. Shao Shang begged him to permit her to go to Tongniu County. She would find the copper for the Emperor. However, the Emperor refused her request because that was a dangerous move. Peng Kun had already taken over the territory.
He told Shao Shang to stay at Changqiu Palace and wait for Ling Bu Yi. To stop Shao Shang from crying and begging, the Emperor punished her with detainment at Changqiu Palace.
Ah sry to keep spamming your site. I just absolutely love your reviews!! Think you mentioned somewhere you relied on the subtitles since you’re not a native speaker? (If not pls disregard I’m doing crazy lol) but I am a native speaker so if there’s any questions feel free to reach out to me!! I do also like to see reviews based on the subs to see the subtle differences from understanding the words. Sometimes it’s hard to translate into english what something really means. I watch this on Viki and they tend to do a good job with the subs. However. Anywhere else like Netflix or Amazon it’s terrible… doesn’t really compare the true meaning of a phrase but so literal translation.
The “chickens” was such a funny scene. But mandarin ducks not sure if you are familiar with it but they’re called yuan yang which means basically hoping for a happy marriage.
Ugh I never get reply notifications when you do reply but if you want feel free to msg me on your iPad or iphone using iMessage. My email for it is [email protected] and am willing to def answer any questions etc 🙂
Hi Julie, glad to hear from you again. Yep… I relied on the subtitles because I could not read or speak Chinese😁. I often compared English and Indonesian translation to understand a scene. Sometimes I need Google to help me with Chinese phrases such as ‘eating vinegar”. Thank you for the offer. You are so sweet, I really appreciate it. I definitely keep your email address ☺️
I had a good laugh at the Chicken scenes. I do understand that mandarin ducks symbolize a married couple, but I have never known that it was also a hope for a happy marriage. Thank you for the information.
About the notifications, it seemed the problem was the system, but I will check it out for you. Thank you so much, Julie!😊
