Episode Recap
Episode 43
After the Emperor granted an audience to Shao Shang, all of them went to the Yongle Palace. The Empress thanked the Noble Consort for helping Shao Shang. But Noble Consort Yue refuses her gratitude. The Emperor granted Shao Shang an audience because he was worried about the Empress’s health if she continued standing in the rain.
There was a knot inside the Empress’s heart. She always felt guilty because the Emperor had to marry her for the sake of the Qian’an clan’s support while he had already married Noble Consort Yue. Noble Consort Yue explained to the Empress that she did not snatch the Emperor from her. She explained that if the Emperor was unwilling to marry the Empress, nobody could force him.
Noble Consort Yue used to be angry toward the Emperor, but she never pointed her anger toward the Empress. Noble Consort Yue had already let go of those feelings because it happened more than 20 years ago. There were no reasons for the Empress to keep those thoughts inside her heart.
The relationship between the Emperor and Noble Consort Yue was more casual because she always played around with him. Meanwhile, the Empress always looked at herself as the subject of the Emperor. But Noble Consort Yue knew that the Emperor also held the Empress dear inside his heart. The Empress should not overlook the fact and keep the sadness inside her heart.
The conversation stopped when Madam Zhai reported that Shao Shang had returned to Changqiu Palace and had been detained by the Emperor. The Empress was ordered to watch Shao Shang closely. The Empress bid farewell to the Noble Consort Yue. Before she left, Noble Consort Yue told the Empress that she always thought of her as an older sister, and she hoped that the Empress could take care of her health.
At the Changqiu Palace, Shao Shang sat by the door looking very sad. As a member of the Cheng family, she wanted to help them. The Empress came and comforted her. She said that the Emperor believed that Shao Shang’s father would not be a traitor. The Emperor just needed some time to investigate the truth.
Shao Shang told the Empress her worries. The Empress said she would write a permit so Shao Shang could leave the Palace and visit them. However, Shao Shang understood that was an act of defying the Emperor. Empress Xuan reassured Shao Shang that the Emperor would not blame the Empress, because he was worried about Shao Shang. Cheng Shao Shang kowtowed and cried because she was grateful for the kindness of Empress Xuan.
Shao Shang left the Palace after she bid farewell to the Empress. Madam Zhai questioned why Shao Shang looked like she was going somewhere far away. The Empress told her that Shao Shang might not come back because the Empress did not just give her a permit, but also a checkpoint clearance so she could go outside the capital.
When Madam Zhai went to the Empress’s study, she found the permit and the checkpoint clearance on the desk. Shao Shang did not take the permit and checkpoint clearance with her. Instead, she forged them. Therefore, if she got caught, the Empress would not be blamed.
Shao Shang went to the Ministry of Justice. Yuan Shen had already waited for her for a very long time. Shao Shang was hesitant to show the permit to the guard when, suddenly, Yuan Shen took the token and verified it. Yuan Shen did not seem to be surprised to see the forged token. He took Shao Shang to see her family inside the dungeon.
Mother Cheng was trying to force Old Madam Cheng to eat. Mother Cheng wants her to eat because she feels obliged to take care of the Cheng family. Old Madam Cheng still refuses her. They were having a dispute when Shao Shang arrived.
When Mother Cheng saw Shao Shang, she immediately reprimanded her. She said that Shao Shang should not be there and she must return to Changqiu Palace. Shao Shang reassures them that she would find a way to save them. But Mother Cheng forbid her from doing that. She said that Shao Shang’s priority was not them but to take good care of herself.
Old Madam Cheng, on the other hand, was disapprove of Mother Cheng’s decision. She told Shao Shang about her private savings. Shao Shang must take the money and use it to help her father and uncles. Shao Shang was touched and said that she had misjudged her grandmother. Old Madam Cheng was not a selfish person. But then the Old Madam Cheng emphasized that she must save the men first. Shao Shang side-eyed her because of her biased nature.
Ling Bu Yi and the Liang duo were discussing a route to Shouchun. This time they could not be careless because they bought the young nobles from the capital. The young nobles blamed Ling Bu Yi for being a coward. Ling Bu Yi reassured them that he had already made an arrangement. Before the Liang duo could ask what arrangement that was, a soldier reported that the young nobles had been gone to eliminate the bandits. Ling Bu Yi slightly smiled when he heard the report.
Ling Bu Yi had hoodwinked Peng Kun by releasing the news about the young nobles being captured by bandits, and now he was busy saving them. Peng Kun believed the news. He used the chance to plunder provisions back to the city.
General Liang led a group of soldiers that carried provisions when Ling Bu Yi ambushed them. He was surprised because of the sneak attack. General Liang suffered a huge loss and was captured by our general.
Qiu Fei pouting was an adorable scene. I still can’t believe he was a war general…😅
Ling Bu Yi took him to his barrack and questioned him. General Liang was angry when he found out that the bandits who captured the young noble were initially Ling Bu Yi’s soldiers who pretended to be bandits. He called Ling Bu Yi a vile and cunning man. General Liang even made a mocking remark about Ling Bu Yi’s chicken wing armor. Ling Bu Yi got angry and yelled at him that the wings were mandarin duck wings… 🤣
Ling Bu Yi had a Shouchun defense map and thorough information about the gate system. Ling Bu Yi explained to Liang Duo that they could not use cavalry to attack Shouchun because Peng Kun had already anticipated an attack from a cavalry. They had to sneak in to open the gate before the army could enter the city.
Ling bu Yi said they could just cut the food supplies of Shouchun, and Shouchun would not last more than a month. Liang Qiu Fei reminded his young master that Ling Bu Yi should return to the capital as soon as possible to marry Shao Shang.
A soldier brought news from the capital. He reported that Cheng Shi and Yan Zhong had conspired with the enemy and took 2,000 jin of refined copper. Right now, Tongniu City had fallen into the hand of an enemy. The Emperor had detained all Cheng family members, and Shao Shang had run away from the capital last night, and her whereabouts were unknown.
Meanwhile, when Shao Shang was on the run, she collected news about her father from an old man who collect man waste from Tongniu county. It was said that Yan Zhong and his family, together with General Cheng Shi brought fully loaded carts out of the city and said that they would return in a half day.
But who knew that after a half day, somebody came with a City Magistrate token and ordered to open the gate. However, it was not Cheng Shi or Yan Zhong, but Ma Rong, the subordinate of Peng Kun.
After he seized the city, Ma Rong did not harm the citizen, he only imprisoned Li Feng and Yin Lao, the Deputies Magistrate of Tongniu county, who refused to surrender. Ma Rong tied them up and paraded them around the city. Everybody in Tongniu heard Li Feng repeatedly say that Yan Zhong and Cheng Shi colluded with the enemy. But Shao Shang find it odd that Ma Rong did not kill Li Feng.
Ling Bu Yi threatens General Ling to sneak him inside the city. General Ling brought the provision into the city with Ling Bu Yi who hide beneath a stack of hay. Meanwhile, inside his bedroom, Peng Kun saw a silhouette of a man. He thought it was Huo Chong who came to attack him. He keeps telling him that it was not him who harmed Huo Chong. When the silhouette spoke, it was Ling Bu Yi.
Peng Kun never expected that Emperor Wen would send Ling Bu Yi to kill him. The rebel general said that if something happened to him, Ling Bu Yi’s father would suffer too. But the thing didn’t go well because Wang Lin suddenly came, and Peng Kun shouted to warn her. Wang Lin ran and screamed that there was a killer. Ling Bu Yi took Peng Kun out as a hostage.
Peng Kun’s army surrounds them with swords and arrows. He told Ling Bu Yi that he was looking for death by entering the city alone. Peng Kun asked Ling Bu Yi whether his father, Ling Yi, had told him that they were on the same side. If Ling Bu Yi killed Peng Kun, he would never know the truth behind the Gu City massacre.
Meanwhile, the Black Armored Guards were outside, ready to enter the city. Liang Qiu Fei and Liang Qiu Qi lead them to defend their young master. Ling Bu Yi attempted to open the gate by throwing Peng Kun and charging into the soldiers. Ling Bu Yi showed his combat ability. Our general alone could defeat a group of soldiers.
Peng Kun started to panic when his sword could not pierce through Ling Bu Yi’s soft armor, the one that Shao Shang made for him.
When the gate opened, the Black Armored Guards seized the city, and Peng Kun was captured. After settling down plans for Shouchun, Ling Bu Yi ordered his soldiers to follow him to Tongniu county. Liang Qiu Fei informed his young master that Ma Rong, Peng Kun’s subordinate has surrendered to Lou Ben, Lou Yao’s older brother. Ling Bu Yi said that Shao Shang have must have set out to Tongniu county to investigate the truth.
Episode 44
Ling Bu Yi went to visit Lou Ben in Tongniu county. Lou Ben told him that after he persuaded Ma Rong to surrender, Ma Rong was stabbed to death by Peng Kun’s vice general. Ling Bu Yi finds it odd because the vice general knew very well that Shouchun was defeated, but he still killed Ma Rong for unknown reasons.
However, Lou Ben said that the vice general was very close and loyal to Peng Kun. Ling Bu Yi praised Lou Ben for his vast knowledge. Our general said that he wanted to bring Lou Ben to the war, but Grand Tutor Lou forbade him because he was worried about Lou Ben’s safety. Ling Bu Yi did not expect that Lou Ben would risk himself and make accomplishments in Tongniu county.
Ling Bu Yi asked whether Lou Ben believed that Yan Zhong colluded with the enemy and the whereabouts of General Cheng Shi. Lou Ben said that Yan Zhong’s letter of confessions had been found in his study. As for Shao Shang’s father, Lou Ben answered that did not know his whereabouts.
Ling Bu Yi told Lou Ben that Li Feng should be released because they should not let good people down. Lou Ben immediately replied to Ling Bu Yi that he would order people to release Li Feng right away. All of a sudden, a guard reported that the prison was on fire and Li Feng had died. When he checked the prison, Ling Bu Yi saw Shao Shang inside the cell.
She passed out because of suffocation. Ling Bu Yi was shocked to see her.
When Ling Bu Yi treated her wounds, Shao Shang told him about her journey from the Capital to Tongniu county. She said that it was a long and hard journey. Ling Bu Yi looked at her with appreciation, he never thought that the delicate Shao Shang could withstand such hardship.
Do you remember when Ling Bu Yi told Shao Shang that she should not go to any barren land with Lou Yao because she would not stand the hardship?🥰
Ling Bu Yi asked how Shao Shang ended up in prison. Shao Shang answered that she realized Li Feng was the key to the truth and her father’s whereabouts. Therefore, she let herself be caught because of stealing and thrown into prison. Shao Shang said that she could not sit still and watched the Cheng family fall into misfortune. If the worse thing happened, she would be the last member of the Cheng family.
Ling Bu Yi reassured her that she was not the last member of the Cheng family. He was her fiancee, and that made him one of them too. He promised her that Shao Shang would never fight alone because Ling Bu Yi would always be by her side.
Ahhh… Our general was soo sweet, I melted when I saw this scene.😍
After the lovey-dovey scene, the discussion continues. Shao Shang said that she met Li Feng inside the prison. Li Feng told her that he would be rich in the future when Lou Ben recovers Tongniu county. Ling Bu Yi stopped her when he realized someone was eavesdropping on their conversation outside the door. It was Lou Ben.
What is wrong with this Lou Ben? He has been acting suspiciously. 🤔
Lou Ben said that he wanted to give a list of the casualties to Ling Bu Yi. He was waiting outside because he did not want to disturb them. Shao Shang snapped that they had already been disturbed and asked Lou Ben to leave immediately.
Lou Ben said that there were only 4 survivors from the fire, including Official Yin Lao. It was an arson attack by General Peng Kun’s spies who wanted to die with Ma Rong because they were not satisfied with his surrender. The spies committed suicide after that.
Shao Shang seemed uneasy with Lou Ben. Ling Bu Yi knew that she was suspicious of Lou Ben. Shao Shang continued her story that Li Feng did not seem to be worried when he was in jail. He was sure that when the royal guard came Ma Rong would surrender.
But when the prison was on fire, Shao Shang heard him scold someone who betrayed him and wanted to kill to silence him. Shao Shang suspected that Li Feng was colluding with someone.
Ling Bu Yi said that he used to be fond of Lou Ben’s cleverness, but he overlook his slyness and did not realize how ambitious he was. Ling Bu Yi and Shao Shang were going to have a hard time collecting evidence against Lou Ben.
The Li family was mourning their master’s death. Ling Bu Yi and Shao Shang came to express their condolences. Yin Lao greeted them. He expressed his sadness over his colleague’s death because of the betrayal of their superior, Yan Zhong.
Yin Lao said that Yan Zhong was an unkind and arrogant person who didn’t get along well with the nobles. However, Yin Lao also said that Yan Zhong didn’t hesitate to cut the salary of his subordinates if he found out they took money for goods given by the citizen.
Back then, when his mother was ill, Yan Zhong would pawn all his assets and exchange his horse cart for a bull cart to hire a famous physician. He wasn’t even embarrassed to use the bull cart. Yin Lao said if he didn’t see Lou Ben finding the letter of repentance himself, he would not have believed that Yan Zhong would take the refined copper.
When Shao Shang asked how Yan Zhong and her father took the coppers out of the city, Yin Lao said that General Cheng and Yan Zhong said that Tongniu was not a safe place. They intended to take the copper back to the capital. But Yan Zhong took his family out of the city too. It showed that he was up to no good. Yin Lao said that the late Official Li Feng told him all the details himself.
Lou Ben promised to take care of the Li family in front of Li Feng’s tablet. He told Madam Li to take some money and return home because Tongniu was a sad place for her. He also said that he believed that Madam Li would make a wise decision for herself.
Madam Li went out to see the guests. Her looks showed uneasiness. The next day, Ling Bu Yi and Shao Shang followed her the whole day when she tried to sell all her assets. Madam Li went to a pawn shop, but then she came out and screamed injustice.
She wanted to pawn her jade pendant but the pawn shop said that her jade pendant was cheap. During the dispute, Madam Li intentionally drops a bag of letters so Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi can take them. They were surprised to see the content.
Ling Bu Yi and Shao Shang checked several letters and maps. Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi had the same opinion that governor Yan was planning to make the city more prosperous by promoting farming and education.
Shao Shang said that Li Feng might have hidden all of Yan Zhong’s handwriting because he was afraid that someone might get suspicious. Ling bu Yi told her that Madam Li kept giving them ambiguous clues.
It seemed that she was scared of someone. Shao Shang recalled that Madam Li used to shout in front of the pawn shop that her hometown was 30 li from Tongniu and her father was a post sheriff.
Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi picked up the clues. He immediately ordered the Liang duo to search every post within 30 li around Tongniu city. The soldiers dug a very big hole and found murdered bodies inside the hole. The bodies belong to Yan Zhong’s family and several men in their 30s and 40s who cannot be identified. They seemed to be the guards who used to come to Tongniu county together with General Cheng.
Shao Shang was frantic when she heard the information. She checked all the bodies, trying to find her father. To stop her from being hysterical, Ling Bu Yi made her unconscious. Ling Bu Yi told the unconscious Shao Shang that he understood her feelings more than anybody else and he promised that he would not let her bear the same pain.
Shao Shang woke up and wanted to continue to search for her father. Ling Bu Yi stopped her, but she retaliated. Liang Qiu Fei told her that Ling Bu Yi had carried her on her back for hours, he didn’t even sleep or drink. Before he could continue, Liang Qiu Qi stopped him.
But this time, Liang Qiu Fei was adamant to stand up for his young master. He said that since Ling Bu Yi knew that Marquis Qu Ling was in trouble, he immediately went to Shouchun alone to capture the city as soon as possible.
He got surrounded by enemies and almost lost his life because Peng Kun stabbed him. After that, he rushed to Tongniu county without getting any sleep. Liang Qiu Fei asked Shao Shang to pity him. Ling Bu Yi stopped him and told Liang Qiu Qi to take his brother to receive his punishment.
Shao Shang asked Ling Bu Yi if he was injured. But Ling Bu Yi assured her he was saved because of Shao Shang’s soft armor. Cheng Shao Shang told Ling Bu Yi to not risked himself even though it was for her sake. Ling Bu Yi said that when he heard that Shao Shang was in trouble, he wanted to help her no matter how high the risk was. Ling Bu Yi told Shao Shang that he understood how she felt because he had always been the last member of the Huo family.
Shao Shang’s tears dropped when she heard his words. She reassured him that just like what he said to her, Ling Bu Yi would never fight alone, and he would not be without choices because she would stay by his side and protect him. Ling Bu Yi looked at her and wanted to say something, but he hesitated. In the end, he said that he really needed her. The lovers hugged each other under the dim candlelight. However, Ling Bu Yi’s expression hides many emotions.
At the palace, Yuan Shen, General Wan, Minister Zuo, and Grand Tutor Lou were standing in front of Xuanming hall, waiting to be summoned by the Emperor. Magister Zuo congratulated Grand Tutor Lou because his nephew Lou Ben had won an impressive battle without a fight and gained honor for the Lou family. Minister Zuo seemed to praise Grand Tutor Lou, but at the same time, mocked him.
Grand Tutor Lou also, cynically, praised Minister Zuo because his family was the descendant of officials, but they were just as brave as a soldier. Minister Zuo’s daughter dared to mess in the Changqiu Palace, while Minister Zuo himself dared to fight Ling Bu Yi at the Censorate. General Wan and Yuan Shen laugh at Minister Zuo. Minister Zuo was angry and changed his target. He said that Yan Zhong was murdered.
However, the only person who survived was Cheng Shi, and the one who found Yan Zhong’s body was Cheng Shao Shang. Minister Zuo was sure that Cheng Shi was the one who did it. General Wan was furious at Minister Zuo’s accusation, and amid his anger, he broke Minister Zuo’s arms.
Eunuch Cao reported that General Wan broke Minister Zuo’s arm to the Emperor. But the Emperor was happy to hear that…😂
Eunuch Cao asked whether the Emperor wanted to meet the officials. But the Emperor refused because he was annoyed by them. He would rather go and meet Noble Consort Yue. However, Eunuch Cao said that Noble Consort Yue refused to meet the Emperor because she was annoyed by him. The Emperor had no other choice, so he decided to meet the officials…🤣
As soon as he got in, Minister Zuo complained about Wan Song Bai and forget to greet the Emperor. Yuan Shen reprimanded his lack of decorum. General Wan explained to the Emperor that Minister Zuo was weak. He slipped and fell by himself. When General Wan wanted to help him, he accidentally broke his arm. Yuan Shen and Grand Tutor Lou agreed to his statement and told the Emperor that was the truth.
Minister Zuo still wanted to punish Cheng Shi. He demanded the Emperor execute the Cheng family members and called Shao Shang back to receive her punishment. Yuan Shen agreed with his word and said that since the war was just over, every department was busy, and only the Censorate was free.
Yuan Shen advised the Emperor to send Minister Zuo to Tongniu County and called Lady Cheng back. General Wan nodded his head, and he agreed to Yuan Shen’s advice.
Minister Zuo refused the idea because he was not a royal servant. However, the Emperor said it was fated, and Minister Zuo already had a good relationship with Ling Bu Yi and Shao Shang. Therefore, the Emperor ordered Minister Zuo to go to Tongniu county to pick up Shao Shang and Ling Bu Yi.
The Emperor also wanted Grand Tutor Lou to call Lou Ben back to the capital because he deserved a reward. Grand Tutor Lou tried to reject the Emperor’s request, but he could not do it.
Back in Tongniu county. Ling Bu Yi and Shao Shang went to visit Lou Ben. They asked how Lou Ben was able to persuade a strong person who has no fear of death, such as Ma Rong, to surrender. Lou Ben said that he was an old acquaintance of Ma Rong. Therefore, they speak in terms, and it was the Emperor’s benevolence that made him surrender.
Ling Bu Yi looked at him and told Lou Ben a story that he heard about Yan Zhong. It was said that Yan Zhong befriended a noble person. However, Yan Zhong did not want to be told that he was surrendering to nobles. Therefore, he always met his friend in secret. Lou Ben was stunned to hear Ling Bu Yi’s story.
